Second-Order Correlation Function for Asymmetric-to-Symmetric Transitions due to Spectrally Indistinguishable Biexciton Cascade Emission

Xue-Fei Wu, Xiu-Ming Dou, Kun Ding +7 more

We report the observed photon bunching statistics of biexciton cascade emission at zero time delay in single quantum dots by second-order correlation function g (2) (τ) measurements under continuous wave excitation. It is found that the bunching phenomenon is independent of the biexciton binding energy when it varies from 0.59 meV to nearly zero. The photon bunching takes place when the exciton photon is not spectrally distinguishable from the biexciton photon, and either of them can trigger the 'start' in a Hanbury–Brown and Twiss setup. However, if the exciton energy is spectrally distinguishable from the biexciton, the photon statistics will become asymmetric and a cross-bunching lineshape can be obtained. The theoretical calculations based on a model of three-level rate-equation analysis are consistent with the result of g (2) (τ) correlation function measurements.

Dynamics and the statistics of three-photon cascade emissions from single semiconductor quantum dots with pulse excitation

Mu-Tian Cheng, Si Xiao, Shao‐Ding Liu +3 more

We analyse the population dynamics and the photon emission statistics of a single semiconductor quantum dot with an exciton–biexciton–triexciton multilevel driven by a pulse field, in which the quantum regression theorem and optical Bloch equations are employed. The populations of the three states are comparable under resonant excitation with the input pulse area around 1.5π. Three second-order cross-correlation functions demonstrate the correlated three-photon emissions at a given order from triexciton, biexciton and exciton states driven by single pulses, while the probability of the bunched three-photon cascaded emissions decreases to the minimum as the input pulse area increases to 2π in every period.

Mechanistic understanding of entanglement and heralding in cascade emitters

Kobra Nasiri Avanaki, George Chappell Schatz

Semiconductor quantum light sources are favorable for a wide range of quantum photonic tasks, particularly quantum computing and quantum information processing. Here, we theoretically investigate the properties of quantum emitters as a source of entangled photons with practical quantum properties including heralding of on-demand single photons. Through the theoretical analysis, we characterize the properties of a cascade (biexciton) emitter, including (1) studies of single-photon purity, (2) investigating the first- and second-order correlation functions, and (3) determining the Schmidt number of the entangled photons. The analytical expression derived for the Schmidt number of the cascade emitters reveals a strong dependence on the ratio of decay rates of the first and second photons. Looking into the joint spectral density of the generated biphotons, we show how the purity and degree of entanglement are connected to the production of heralded single photons. Our model is further developed to include polarization effects, fine structure splitting, and the emission delay between the exciton and biexciton emission. The extended model offers more details about the underlying mechanism of entangled photon production, and it provides additional degrees of freedom for manipulating the system and characterizing purity of the output photon. The theoretical investigations and the analysis provide a cornerstone for the experimental design and engineering of on-demand single photons.
