Phase sensitivity in deformed-state superposition considering nonlinear phase shifts

Abstract

Abstract We study the problem of the phase estimation for the deformation-state superposition (DSS) under perfect and lossy (due to a dissipative interaction of DSS with their environment) regimes. The study is also devoted to the phase enhancement of the quantum states resulting from a generalized non-linearity of the phase shifts, both without and with losses. We find that such a kind of superposition can give the smallest variance in the phase parameter in comparison with usual Schrödinger cat states in different order of non-linearity even if for a larger average number of photons. Due to the significance of how a system is quantum correlated with its environment in the construction of a scalable quantum computer, the entanglement between the DSS and its environment is investigated during the dissipation. We show that partial entanglement trapping occurs during the dynamics depending on the kind of deformation and mean photon number. These features make the DSS with a larger average number of photons a good candidate for implementation of schemes of quantum optics and information with high precision.

High precision regions of phase sensitivity for the superposition of coherent fields

K. Berrada

We investigate the problem of parameter estimation for the superposition of coherent fields under perfect and lossy regimes. We show the optimal range for higher precision of phase estimation by exactly solving a model consisting of a Schrödinger-cat state (SCS) subject to zero-temperature under a decoherence effect due to a dissipative interaction with an environment. We find the phenomenon that the quantum Fisher information (QFI), namely, the precision of estimation, is slowly reduced with the environment effect and affected by the photon number effects. We find that revivals and retardation of the QFI loss may occur by adjusting the mean photon number, and increasing the photons strongly enhances the coherence and hence augments the resolution of the parameter estimation. Due to the significance of how a system is quantum correlated with its environment in the construction of a scalable quantum computer, the entanglement between the coherent field and its environment is investigated during the dissipation. We show that partial entanglement trapping occurs during the dynamics depending on the mean photon number. These features make the SCS with a larger average number of photons a good candidate for implementation of schemes of quantum optics and information with high precision.

Quantum metrology with SU(1,1) coherent states in the presence of nonlinear phase shifts

K. Berrada

We present an improved phase estimation scheme employing entangled SU(1,1) coherent states in comparison to NOON and entangled coherent states under perfect and lossy conditions for a fixed mean photon number. The study is also devoted to the phase enhancement of the quantum states resulting from a generalized nonlinearity of the phase shifts, both without and with losses. Furthermore, we show that these states give the smallest variance in the phase parameter for a large number of photons in a different order of nonlinearity. Finally, the phase sensitivity of this interferometric setting with parity detection is discussed.

Quantum phase estimation for nonlinear phase shifts with entangled spin coherent states of two modes

K. Berrada, S. Abdel‐Khalek

Recently, we presented (Berrada K, Abdel-Khalek S and Raymond Ooi C H 2012 Phys. Rev. A 86 033823) an improved phase estimation scheme employing entangled spin coherent states (ESCSs) using the Holstein?Primakoff realization of angular momentum algebra. Here, we study the nonlinear phase enhancement from a generalized nonlinearity on ESCSs under perfect and lossy conditions with the same mean photon number and nonlinearity order. The results show that an increase in the spin number gives the smallest variance in the phase parameter in comparison to N00N states for different orders of nonlinearity. Finally, we study the physical properties of the input optical field and explore a connection between this quantity and the output state phase uncertainty. In particular, we show that the Mandel parameter may be used as an indicator of the phase estimation behavior in this interferometric setting.

Noncommutative deformed cat states under decoherence

K. Berrada, Hichem Eleuch

This work has been motivated through the paper [42] by S. Dey on the nonclassical properties of the deformed harmonic oscillators. We study the dynamics of the nonclassical properties and nonlocal correlation for deformed coherent states superposition (DCSS) subjects to decoherence effect due to a dissipative interaction in deformed spaces. We consider two types of deformations, $q$ deformation that describes a large class of deformed harmonic oscillators and $L$ deformation that enters in the real possibilities of trapped ion systems. We find that such a kind of superposition, that gives rise to a richer phase space structure, the nonclassicality, squeezing, and entanglement can survive and they are robust against decoherence. The present results show that DCSS have less optical noise under dissipative dynamics in comparison with the usual Schr\"odinger cat states and may open new perspectives for the experimental observation of macro realism in quantum mechanics.

Quantum metrology for simultaneously estimating the linear and nonlinear phase shifts

Jing Cheng

Quantum metrology allows the enhanced precision on estimating phase shifts in an optical interferometer to reach the $\ensuremath{\propto}1/N$ scaling of precision ($N$ is the mean photon number of the light field). But when $N$ is very large, the nonlinear optical effects may be nonnegligible. Here we investigate theoretically the quantum uncertainty bounds for simultaneously detecting the linear and nonlinear phase shifts. Focusing our attentions only on the linear and the nonlinear Kerr phase shifts, we find the NOON states can not be used to measure the two phase parameters. Using the entangled coherent states, the estimation precision is limited by the $1/{N}^{1/2}$ ($1/{N}^{3/2}$) scaling for the linear (nonlinear) phase. To increase the precisions and beat the standard quantum limit, we show that the entangled Schr\"odinger-cat states can be used to reach the $1/N$ scaling for the linear phase and $1/{N}^{2}$ scaling for the nonlinear phase.

Improved linear and Kerr nonlinear phase estimation via photon addition operations

Zekun Zhao, Qingqian Kang, Shoukang Chang +4 more

Abstract The precision of quantum measurements can be effectively improved by using both photon-added non-Gaussian operations and Kerr nonlinear phase shift. Here, we employ a coherent state mixed with a photon-added squeezed vacuum state as the input to a Mach–Zehnder interferometer with parity detection, thereby achieving a significant enhancement in phase measurement precision. Our research focuses on the phase sensitivity of linear phase shift under both ideal conditions and photon loss, as well as quantum Fisher information (QFI). The results demonstrate that employing the photon addition operations can markedly enhance phase sensitivity and QFI, and under optimal conditions, the measurement precision can approach the Heisenberg limit for the linear phase shift case. In addition, we delve deeper into the scenario of replacing the linear phase shift with a Kerr nonlinear one and systematically analyze the QFI under both ideal and photon loss conditions. By comparison, it is evident that employing both the photon addition operations and the Kerr nonlinear phase shift can further significantly enhance phase measurement precision while effectively improving the system’s robustness against photon loss. These findings are instrumental in facilitating the development and practical application of quantum metrology.
