Abstract

It was recently shown that an entangled coherent state, which is a superposition of two different coherent states, can surpass the performance of noon state in estimating an unknown phase shift. This may hint at further enhancement in phase estimation by incorporating more component states in the superposition of resource state. We here introduce a four-headed cat state (4HCS), a superposition of four different coherent states, and propose its application to quantum phase estimation. We demonstrate the enhanced performance in phase estimation by employing an entangled state via the 4HCS, which can surpass that of the two-headed cat state (2HCS), particularly in the regime of small average photon numbers. Moreover, we show that an entangled state modified from the 4HCS can further enhance the phase estimation, even in the regime of large average photon number under a photon-loss channel. Our investigation further extends to incorporate an increasingly large number of component states in the resource superposition state and clearly show its merit in phase estimation.

Quantum statistical properties of phase-type three-headed Schrodinger cat state

Lin Dun-Qing, Zhu Ze-Qun, Wang Zu-Jian +1 more

Quantum superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics, which provides a crucial basis to observe phenomena beyond the predictions of classical physics. For example, a quantum entangled state can exhibit stronger correlation than classically possible one. In quantum state engineering, many new quantum states can be obtained from the superposition of many known states. In recent decades, the superposition of coherent states (CSs) with the same amplitude but two different phases has been a subject of great interest. This superposition state was often called Schrodinger cat state (here, we also name it 2-headed cat state (2HCS)), which becomes an important tool to study a lot of fundamental issues. Surprisingly, some studies have extended the quantum superposition to involving more than two component coherent states. In order to produce the superposition of three photons, people have considered the superposition of coherent states with three different phases (here, we also name it 3-headed cat state (3HCS)). Furthermore, in microwave cavity quantum electrodynamics of bang-bang quantum Zeno dynamics control, people have proposed the superposition of coherent states with four different phases (here, we also name it 4-headed cat state (4HCS)). In this paper, we make a detailed investigation on the quantum statistical properties of a phase-type 3HCS. These properties include photon number distribution, average photon number, sub-Poissionian distribution, squeezing effect, and Wigner function, etc. We derive their analytical expressions and make numerical simulations for these properties. The results are compared with the counterparts of the CS, the 2HCS and the 4HCS. The conclusions are obtained as follows. 1) The CS, the 2HCS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS have k, 2k, 3k and 4k photon number components, respectively (k is an integer); 2) small difference in average photon number among these quantum states in small-amplitude range can be observed, while their average photon numbers become almost equal in large-amplitude range; 3) the CS exhibits Poisson distribution, and the 2HCS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS exhibit super-Poisson distributions in most amplitude ranges, however, sub-Poisson distribution can be seen for the 3HCS and the 4HCS in some specific amplitude ranges; 4) except for the 2HCS that may have the squeezing property, no squeezing properties can be found in the CS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS; 5) negative values can exist in the Wigner functions for the 2HCS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS, while it is not found in the CS. Similar to the 2HCS and 4HCS, the Wigner function of the 3HCS has negative component, which implies its nonclassicality. Different from the 2HCS, the 3HCS exhibits sub-Poisson photon number distribution in a certain amplitude range, it is weaker than that of the 4HCS. At the same time, no squeezing is found in the 3 or 4HCS, which is another difference from the 2HCS.

Quantum-enhanced phase estimation with photon-engineered multi-headed cat states

Tooba Bibi, Shahid Iqbal

We investigate multi-headed Schrödinger cat states (MHCS) engineered via multiphoton addition and subtraction sequences, namely addition, subtraction, addition-then-subtraction, and subtraction-then-addition across even, odd, three-headed cat states (3HCS), and four-headed cat states (4HCS). Our analysis reveals that operator noncommutativity plays a decisive role in quantum metrology: addition-then-subtraction consistently yields the highest phase sensitivity among the operations considered, even when alternative orderings exhibit stronger Wigner negativity, highlighting a distinction between phase space and operational nonclassicality. Among all states, 4HCS achieves the best performance due to enhanced interference structures, reaching a significant improvement over the shot-noise limit. We also examine robustness under photon loss and dephasing, confirming their practical advantage for quantum sensing.

Optimal quantum phase estimation with generalized multi-component Schrödinger cat states

Seung-Woo Lee, Su‐Yong Lee, Jaewan Kim

In this paper, we are interested in detecting the presence of a nearby phase-sensitive object, where traveling light works out under a low-photon loss rate. Here we investigate the optimal quantum phase estimation with generalized multi-component Schrödinger cat states. In addition, we show the optimal conditions of the generalized multi-component cat states for the phase estimation in a lossless scenario. We then demonstrate that the generalized multi-component cat states can beat the performances of the NOON and two-mode squeezed vacuum states in the presence of small loss, while maintaining the quantum advantage over the standard quantum limit, attainable by coherent states. Finally, we propose a generation scheme of the entangled multi-component cat states with current or near-term optical technologies.

Quantum metrology for nonlinear phase shifts with entangled coherent states

Jaewoo Joo, Ki-min Park B, Hyunseok Jeong +3 more

We investigate the phase enhancement of quantum states subject to nonlinear phase shifts. The optimal phase estimation of even entangled coherent states (ECSs) is shown to be better than that of NOON states with the same average particle number $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and nonlinearity exponent $k$. We investigate the creation of an approximate entangled coherent state (AECS) from a photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum with current optical technology methods and show that a pure AECS is even better than an even ECS for large $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}$. Finally, we examine the simple, but physically relevant, cases of loss in the nonlinear interferometer for a fixed average photon number $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}$.

Quantum phase estimation using path-symmetric entangled states

Su‐Yong Lee, Chang-Woo Lee, Jaehak Lee +1 more

We study the sensitivity of phase estimation using a generic class of path-symmetric entangled states |φ〉|0〉 + |0〉|φ〉, where an arbitrary state |φ〉 occupies one of two modes in quantum superposition. With this generalization, we identify the fundamental limit of phase estimation under energy constraint that is characterized by the photon statistics of the component state |φ〉. We show that quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) can be indefinitely lowered with super-Poissonianity of the state |φ〉. For possible measurement schemes, we demonstrate that a full photon-counting employing the path-symmetric entangled states achieves the QCRB over the entire range [0, 2π] of unknown phase shift ϕ whereas a parity measurement does so in a certain confined range of ϕ. By introducing a component state of the form , we particularly show that an arbitrarily small QCRB can be achieved even with a finite energy in an ideal situation. This component state also provides the most robust resource against photon loss among considered entangled states over the range of the average input energy Nav > 1. Finally we propose experimental schemes to generate these path-symmetric entangled states for phase estimation.

Quantum phase estimation for nonlinear phase shifts with entangled spin coherent states of two modes

K. Berrada, S. Abdel‐Khalek

Recently, we presented (Berrada K, Abdel-Khalek S and Raymond Ooi C H 2012 Phys. Rev. A 86 033823) an improved phase estimation scheme employing entangled spin coherent states (ESCSs) using the Holstein?Primakoff realization of angular momentum algebra. Here, we study the nonlinear phase enhancement from a generalized nonlinearity on ESCSs under perfect and lossy conditions with the same mean photon number and nonlinearity order. The results show that an increase in the spin number gives the smallest variance in the phase parameter in comparison to N00N states for different orders of nonlinearity. Finally, we study the physical properties of the input optical field and explore a connection between this quantity and the output state phase uncertainty. In particular, we show that the Mandel parameter may be used as an indicator of the phase estimation behavior in this interferometric setting.
