Abstract

By using electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) dynamics,we realized the storage and release of optical signals in 87Rb cold atoms, studied the relationship between the storage efficiency and the coupling intensity.Experimental results show that the storage efficiency increases with the coupling intensity in the situation of low coupling intensity. When the coupling beam exceeds certain intensity, the storage efficiency doesn′t increase any more. Then it runs down with the rise of coupling intensity.By analyzing the absorption and dispersion characteristics of light pulse propagating through cold atoms,we made a qualitative explanation of the changing trend of the storage efficiency with the coupling intensity changing.

The Relationship between Light Storage Efficiency and Repumping Intensity in Cold Atom Medium

Zhang Zhi-yin

By using electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT),we realized the optical signal storage and release in 87 Rb cold atom medium. We have got the curve of storage efficiency as a function of the repumping intensity in cooling system.Experimental results showed that:the storage efficiency increases with the repumping intensity, when it increases from zero;if the repumping intensity exceeds a certain intensity, the storage efficiency begins to decrease.A simple analysis interpreted the relationship between storage efficiency and the repumping intensity.

Experimental Investigation of Optical Storage and Release in EIT Medium of ~(87)Rb Cold Atom

Hai Wang

Optical storage and release is achieved by using electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) dynamics in cooled 87Rb atoms medium. The collapses and revivals of the released signal caused by Larmor precession is studied in the experiment. The results show the measured Larmor periods are in agreement with theoretical predictions when the provided magnetic field along quantization axis is over 100 mG,which provide the experimental foundation for quantum storage research in the future.

Experimental study of the dependences of retrieval efficiencies on time delay between magneto-optical-trap being turned off and optical storage

陈力荣, 徐忠孝, 李萍 +6 more

We report an experimental study of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT)-based light storage in a cloud of cold atoms loaded into a magneto-optical-trap(MOT). After the MOT is turned off, the retrieval efficiencies of rightand left-circularly polarized signal light fields each as a function of storage time are measured for different time delays between MOT off and the storage event, respectively. The results show that in the delay ranging from 0.015 ms to 3.5 ms,the retrieval efficiency for a zero-storage time(0.2 μs) and the storage lifetime can exceed 15% and 1.4 ms, respectively. The measured results will provide important help for optimizing the storage of the polarized entanglement photons in cold atomic ensembles.

Dynamic light storage in coherently induced cavity of cold atoms

Ying Han

By applying a traveling-wave coupling field,a standing-wave grating field, and a static magnetic field to a cold atomic ensemble,a dynamically controlled cavity consisting of two Bragg regions of high reflection and an electromagnetically induced transparency region with high transmission is realized. With modulating all the three fields in time,a weak probe pulse is sent into the coherently induced optical cavity to achieve several periodic oscillations and then it is retrieved after a short time. This physical phenomenon is accompanied with little energy loss and can be regarded as an efficient scheme for dynamic light storage. This paper simulates the dynamic light storage scheme, discusses numerically its advantages and presents the developing trend of the scheme.

Contrasts of electromagnetically-induced transparency in unperturbed and perturbed cold atoms of 87Rb

Hoon Yu, Mi Hyun Choi, Seung Jin Kim +1 more

We experimentally measured the relative contrast of an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) spectrum with two cw lasers in a Λ-type system of magneto-optically trapped 87 Rb atoms, which is a perturbed cold atomic medium. The contrast depends nonlinearly on the power of the coupling beam. Experimental results showed good agreement qualitatively with the simulation results considering the trapping magnetic field gradient, which induced detuning of the coupling laser. We used a free expanding cold atomic cloud that had a temperature of (36 ± 1) µK. To observe the EIT spectrum in the non-perturbed medium, we used two pulsed lasers. We observed that the relative contrast in the unperturbed medium was three times higher than that in the perturbed medium under our experimental conditions.

Nonlinear wave mixing with electromagnetically induced transparency in cold atoms

Hoonsoo Kang, Gessler Hernandez, Yifu Zhu

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a four-level atomic system suppresses linear absorption and leads to resonantly enhanced slow-light four-wave mixing at low light intensities. We analyse the backward four-wave mixing in the four-level system under the EIT conditions, derive the four-wave-mixing efficiency and discuss slow-light propagation conditions. We present experimental measurements of resonant four-wave mixing with the backward scheme in cold Rb atoms and compare the experimental results with the theoretical calculations.
