Dynamics of Atoms in Laser Standing Wave in Regime of Immersion-lens

Abstract

The dynamics of atoms in laser standing wave (SW) in the regime of over-focused immersion-lens is studied. Through directly evolving a one-dimensional Schrdinger equation, we find that multiple focusing appears when laser intensity is larger than that required for simple focusing. If laser intensity is much higher than that for the single focusing, a channeling phenomenon appears, which is insensitive to the variation of some parameters, such as focal plane position and laser intensity. This channeling phenomenon is advantageous for atomic deposition in laser SW.

Building on direct numerical calculation, it analyzes the dynamics of atoms propagating through a laser standing wave (SW) potential in the regime of immersion-lens.The spot size of Cr atomic deposition is estimated. It is also shown that some physical quantities, such as atomic velocity distribution, laser detuning and laser beam radius, play important roles in determining the quality of atom lithography.

Variable focal-length lens for atoms

Qiming Li, K. G. H. Baldwin, Hans‐A. Bachor +1 more

A near-resonant standing laser light field is used to focus a diverging beam of sodium atoms onto the atomic-beam axis. The investigations presented here distinguish between channeling of atoms with trajectories close to the axis and imaging of the atomic source. For laser detunings close to resonance, acceleration of the atoms in the transverse direction occurs. The amount of acceleration changes as either the intensity or the detuning of the standing wave is varied, thereby altering the position at which the atoms are imaged. This results in a variable focal-length lens for atoms. The experimental results are in good agreement with a theoretical model based on a continued-fraction solution for the standing-wave light forces.

Quantum-Mechanical Simulation of an Atomic Beam Focused by an Optical Standing Wave

He Ming, Wang Jin, X.H. Tu +3 more

Recent experiments have demonstrated that the light pressure force from an optical standing wave (SW) focuses an atomic beam to sub-micrometre dimensions. We start from a two-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation and reduce it to a one-dimensional equation by a paraxial approximation. We calculate some theoretical limits on the focusing of an atomic beam by an SW optical field. It is found that two parameters, the atomic velocity and the intensity of the laser beam, play an important role in determining the deposition quality.

Quantum Analysis of ~(23)Na Atoms Deposition in the Gaussian Laser Standing Wave Field

Tongbao Li

The effect of a Gaussian laser standing wave on 23Na atoms was simulated by CRANK-NICOLSON numerical algorithm based on quantum-mechanical method. It was found that atoms focus on wave nodes in standing wave light field with a period of λ/2 when the laser is positive-detuned.The focusing results are in accord with thin lens regime, thick lens regime and channeling regime, respectively,as the optical potential is deepened or the longitudinal velocity of atoms is increased. In thick lens regime, the focal plane shifts backward and the full width at half maximum(FWHM)increases, along the z direction,as the atomic longitudinal velocity increases. With increasing laser power or decreasing beam waist, the FWHM of atomic density peak at the focal plane decreases, both the peak value and the contrast increase.

Channeling of Atoms in a Standing Wave

V. I. Balykin, Vladilen S Letokhov

This chapter provides a brief review of the recent theoretical and experimental results of channeling of atoms in the standing wave. It considers the channeling (one dimensional localization) of atoms in two configurations of the laser fields: a monochromatic and a bichromatic one dimensional laser fields. A quasi resonant monochromatic laser field creates a spatially periodic potential field with a period equal to a half of the wavelength. When atomic beam crosses standing wave and atoms have a low enough kinetic energy, they are guided into the channels where they move along the channel and oscillate in the transverse direction. To detect this channeling the atoms have been chosen themselves as probes of their position. A scheme of a cooling of atoms through their channeling is based on the adiabatic lowering the standing wave intensity.
