Abstract

In this letter, we report a novel bistable optical device composed merely of a laser diode (or LED), two PIN photodetectors and several electronic components. The effect of hysterisis has been experimentally demonstrated. The operational modes of the device, such as optical memory, optical switching, optical pulse shaping have also been achieved. The operational principle, optoelectronic hybrid integrated, technique and characteristics of the present device are described.

Hybrid optical bistability and optical logic gates with avalanche heterojunction phototransistor and semiconductor laser diodes

Dong Jie, Huang Xiao-Kang, Sun Bao-Yin

In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a new kind of optical bistable scheme which is based on an AHPT (avalanche heterojunction phototransistor) and an LD. The operating principles of the AHPT and the completed bistable devices are discussed in details. A simple assumption is made to simplify the analysis. When the AHPT-LD-BOD works in the steady state, it presents four operating modes, which are linear amplification, avalanche gain, optical bistability, as well as optoelectronic switching. When it is in the mode of the optical bistability, the critical triggering optical power is no more than 10 μW and the output power at ON state is larger than 1 mW. The ratio of the output optical power at ON state to that at OFF state is greater than 4 dB. Based on the good performance of the AHPT, we can realize five elementary optical logic gates, which are OR, AND, INVERTER, NOR, and NAND. The advantage of this kind of bistable system over the conventional ones is that neither external optical nor electrical feedback is needed. Therefore, it is possible and convenient to realize either monolithic or hybrid integration.

Optical bistability and multistability in an active interferometer

Junji Ohtsubo, Yun Liu

Optoelectronic hybrid bistability and multistability in an active interferometer using a laser diode are demonstrated experimentally. The active laser-diode interferometer is composed of a Twyman-Green interferometer with an electronic feedback circuit. By feeding back the interferometer output together with an external light input through a detector to control thelaser-diode injection current, the optical bistable and multistable states of the output power from the laser diode are observed. Bistable operation does not require cutoff or saturation in the amplifier. The theoretical background of the phenomena is discussed.

Optical-fiber-coupled optical bistable semiconductor lasers

Zhing Lichen, Tang Yunxin, Qin Ying +1 more

A compact, low input power optical bistable device, consisting of a photodetector, an optical fiber directional coupler, and a semiconductor laser diode, was presented. The principle is described graphically to explain the observed effects such as hysteresis, differential operational gain and memory functions.

Active optical bistability based on stable-unstable resonator transitions

C. S. Lee, Hideharu OSADA

We propose and report the first experimental demonstration of a new type of active optical bistable device composed of an optical cavity and a lasing medium with a pumping source of either optical or nonopticai means. The basic principle underlying the operation of the optical bistable laser (OBL) is based on the stable-unstable cavity configuration transition of an active optical resonator. Generally speaking, a laser system showing both pump- and laser-induced tensing (focusing or defocusing) effects may display such a hysteresis loop in its input-output characteristics. Optical bistability (OB) based on self-focusing of light in a medium having a nonlinear refractive index has recently been shown experimentally.1

Review Of Integrated Bistable Optical Devices Construction

Tadeusz Maciak, Jerzy Kruszewski

Bistable optical devices have been suggested for a number of applications (switching, optical memory, binary logic, discrimination, amplifications, clipping, limiting and pulse shaping) in optical signal processing and communication system. Recently, several integrated optical bistable devices have been made available. Most of them have performed by using LiNb03 as electrooptical waveguide modulator. A review of integrated bistable devices based on waveguide optical modulators is presented under this paper.
