Abstract

Mixers with HTS YBCO/MgO,YBCO/YSZ bicrystal Josephson junction are researched on.Harmonic mixing at sub-mm wave band has been studied on two different HTS mixing systems:one is mounted on pulse tube cryocooler, the other is G-M cryocooler. We measured and analyzed the characteristic of Conversion Efficiency and its relationships with coupling coefficient,LO power, bias current, harmonic number and so on.

Harmonic frequency mixing using high T_c superconductor Josephson junction mounted on pulse tube cryocooler

Weiwei, Xu, Qingguo +7 more

A frequency mixing system including microwave coupling and intermediate frequency (IF) measurement arrangements is designed. In lieu of liquid nitrogen, a pulse tube cryocooler is used to cool the whole system. With YBa2Cu3O7/Yttrium stabilized zirconia (YBCO/YSZ) bicry-stal Josephson junction as the mixing element, 36th harmonic frequency mixing at the 8 mm waveband is obtained.

Experimental Study of Harmonic Mixer Using two HTS YBCO Grain Boundary Josephson Junctions in Series

Mei Yu, H. F. Geng, Tao Hua +6 more

Two high-Tc superconducting (HTS) YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO) grain boundary (GB) Josephson junctions in series as a harmonic mixer is investigated. The research shows that the mixer consisting of two series YBCO Josephson junctions has a larger harmonic number than that with only one junction in heterodyne mixing at zero-voltage bias. One of the advantages of the series-Josephson-junction mixer is that the total critical current is improved without sacrificing the sensitivity of the junctions in the array that makes the mixer easier to get more microwave induced-steps required by larger harmonic number. Furthermore, the underdamped YBCO GB series-Josephson-junction mixer operated at zero-bias voltage, where the zero-order Shapiro step exists, achieves mutual phase locking of the junctions in the array, resulting in an excellent mixing performance. Thus, the series-underdamp-Josephson-junction mixer with zero bias is predominant and compact in terahertz (THz) application due to its excellent performance and no dc bias supply.

Terahertz harmonic mixer based on HTS Josephson junction

Mei Yu, Weiwei Xu, Jin Shi +3 more

High temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson junction (JJ) mixers are attractive candidates in receivers for terahertz (THz) communication due to their high sensitivity, wide bandwidth, low local oscillator (LO) power requirement and high harmonic numbers. The required LO frequencies and the cost can be greatly reduced when harmonic signals can be detected at high orders (more than 100). In this paper, up to 114thharmonic mixings is presented in a HTS bicrystal YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO) JJ harmonic mixer coupled with a bowtie loaded meander antenna at 0.21 THz. HTS JJs will be promising high-order harmonic mixers for THz practical applications on reception or detection at THz bands.

NOISE FIGURE MEASUREMENT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTING Bi-CRYSTAL JOSEPHSON JUNCTION MIXERS

Peiheng Wu

Noise figure(NF) is an important parameter of the superconducting mixer, which is a key indicator of the mixer's sensitivity depending on the internal noise.Using the efficient and durable small size pulse tube refrigerator for the cold source,we designed the High Temperature Superconducting(HTS) Josephson junction harmonic mixer and noise figure automatic measurement systems which operated at 60 K.YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO)/MgO Josephson junctions was fabricated through argon ion band etching.Using the Y-factor measurement method,we estimated the noise figure of the HTS Josephson junction mixer with conventional hot/cold blackbodies irradiation techniques. The Josephson junction,we had successfully fabricated, had 1mV characteristic voltage, and it had good microwave response and high harmonic numbers at operating frequencies around 650 GHz.At the 30th harmonic of fS=210GHz,the double-crystal Josephson junction biased in the different voltages,IF output signal to noise ratio changed in the range of 30 dB.The noise figure had a minimum 10 dB at a bias voltage of 300 μV and at the irradiation of blackbodies at 77 K and 300 K.

Monolithic high-temperature superconducting (HTS) K-band sub-harmonic mixer based on reverse-biased Josephson junctions

He Zhu, Ting Zhang, Jia Du

Abstract This paper presents a monolithic high-temperature superconducting K-band sub-harmonic Josephson mixer using a pair of reverse-biased Josephson junctions (JJs), which are biased using reversed DC current. The sub-harmonic mixer can provide higher conversion gain and stronger rejection of the even-order harmonics of the local oscillator signal. A matching circuit with several bandpass filters (BPFs) is designed to match the junctions and achieve a maximum conversion gain. Based on the circuit configuration and using the established Verilog-A JJ mixer model, transient simulation has been done in the circuit simulator. An electromagnetic (EM) model is built and simulated in a full-wave simulation environment, and the results reveal that the design realizes very low loss at 25 GHz, excellent port isolation and high conversion efficiency. A prototype has been fabricated and tested in a cryocooler at operating temperatures of 40 K and 20 K. Measurements have experimentally verified the novel radio frequency design and simulation results. Maximum conversion gains of −10.5 dB and −6.5 dB were obtained at 40 K and 20 K, respectively, with a bandwidth greater than 400 MHz and outstanding gain linearity. It is also predicted that the mixer performance can be further improved with higher critical current I c values and identical or similar I c values between two parallel junctions.
