Technologies for reducing multi-user interference in optical CDMA

Abstract

Multi user interference in optical CDMA systems comes from the property that users' signature sequences are not completely orthogonal, which will severely affect the performance of OCDMA systems, thereby directly limiting the number of users which simultaneously use the system to transfer data. So it is very important to try our best to minimize the multi user interference. In this paper several solutions for reducing multi user interference are introduced, and their performance is discussed.

We demonstrate a BER of 10{sup -11} for 16 simultaneous users, using wavelength/time O-CDMA. We show the extent to which severe multi-access interference can be used to mask and/or degrade the signal from an intruder.

Security analysis in optical CDMA network systems

Nihad Ibrahim Abdullah, Abd Samad Hasan Basari, Abdul Karim Mohamad +4 more

(OCDMA) is an alternative method, which performs encoding and decoding through an optical signature code, in order to allow the selection of the desired signal so that different users can share the same bandwidth. In such a system, the data signal overlap both in time and wavelength. Tradeoffs between security and performance in optical CDMA are presented. Confidentiality against eavesdropper interception strategies for optical CDMA is considered. Coherent detection and combining signals shows better confidentiality than the incoherent one. Spectral amplitude optical CDMA based on Modified Double Weight (MDW) systems, with different code dimension, is investigated. Increasing the network system capacity or maximizing authorized specified SNRs will lead to eavesdropper to detect high SNRs.

Noise limits of optical spectral-encoding CDMA systems

E.D.J. Smith, P.T. Gough, Desmond P. Taylor

The performance of optical CDMA systems based on the spectral-amplitude coding of broadband sources is shown to be limited by the optical beat noise between the sources. The limits derived here are significantly lower than previous performance estimates which did not include this beat noise. Even under ideal conditions, the total throughput is approximately inversely proportional to the number of possible simultaneous users.

We propose a novel non-uniform spectral coding scheme in an optical-CDMA system that utilizes spectral phase encoded time-spreading (SPECTS). The new method achieves lower multi-user-interference and twice network capacity for Gaussian spectral shape optical pulses
