Continuous-variable quantum communication

Vladyslav C. Usenko, Antonio Acín, Romain Alléaume +8 more

Tremendous progress in experimental quantum optics in recent decades has enabled the advent of quantum technologies, one of which is quantum communication. Aimed at novel methods for more secure or more efficient information transfer, quantum communication has developed into an active field of research and proceeds toward full-scale implementations and industrialization. Continuous-variable methods of multiphoton quantum state preparation, manipulation, and coherent detection, as well as the respective theoretical tools of phase-space quantum optics, offer the possibility of making quantum communication efficient, applicable, and accessible, thus boosting the development of the field. We review the methodology, techniques, and protocols of continuous-variable quantum communication from the first theoretical ideas through milestone implementations to recent developments. The review covers quantum key distribution as well as other quantum communication schemes that are suggested on the basis of continuous-variable states and measurements.

Quantum information with continuous variables

Samuel L. Braunstein, Peter van Loock

Quantum information is a rapidly advancing area of interdisciplinary research. It may lead to real-world applications for communication and computation unavailable without the exploitation of quantum properties such as nonorthogonality or entanglement. This article reviews the progress in quantum information based on continuous quantum variables, with emphasis on quantum optical implementations in terms of the quadrature amplitudes of the electromagnetic field.

Multipartite entangled optical fields with continuous variables and their applications in quantum computation

Su Xiao

In parallel with quantum information systems based on single photons, optical quantum information science with continuous variables based on the quadrature components of optical fields is also developing rapidly. For this, multipartite entangled states of light are the fundamental resources. In this paper we first introduce the concepts and preparation of multipartite entangled states, then discuss the basic models of quantum computation with continuous variables and the progress in experimental investigations.

From quantum cloning to quantum key distribution with continuous variables: a review (Invited)

Nicolas J. Cerf, Philippe Grangier

Quantum information processing with continuous variables is a paradigm that has attracted a growing interest over the past years, partly as a consequence of the prospects for high-rate quantum communication systems based on standard optical telecommunication components. In this overview article, we introduce the concept of quantum continuous variables in optics and then turn to the fundamental impossibility of cloning continuous-variable light states, a result that lies at the heart of quantum key distribution. Then we present state-of-the-art quantum key distribution systems relying on continuous variables, focusing mainly on the protocols using Gaussian-modulated coherent light states and emphasizing the current experimental demonstration of these systems. Finally, we briefly review recent security proofs of these cryptographic protocols.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution system: Past, present, and future

Yichen Zhang, Yiming Bian, Zhengyu Li +2 more

Quantum key distribution provides secure keys with information-theoretic security ensured by the principle of quantum mechanics. The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution using coherent states offers the advantages of its compatibility with telecom industry, e.g., using commercial laser and homodyne detector, is now going through a booming period. In this review article, we describe the principle of continuous-variable quantum key distribution system; focus on protocols based on coherent states, whose systems are gradually moving from proof-of-principle lab demonstrations to in-field implementations and technological prototypes. We start by reviewing the theoretical protocols and the current security status of these protocols. Then, we discuss the system structure, the key module, and the mainstream system implementations. The advanced progresses for future applications are discussed, including the digital techniques, system on chip, and point-to-multipoint system. Finally, we discuss the practical security of the system and conclude with promising perspectives in this research field.
