Abstract

In parallel with quantum information systems based on single photons, optical quantum information science with continuous variables based on the quadrature components of optical fields is also developing rapidly. For this, multipartite entangled states of light are the fundamental resources. In this paper we first introduce the concepts and preparation of multipartite entangled states, then discuss the basic models of quantum computation with continuous variables and the progress in experimental investigations.

Continuous variable multipartite entanglement and optical implementations of quantum communication networks

Yimin Lian, Changde Xie, Kunchi Peng

A variety of optical quantum information networks based on the multipartite entanglement of amplitude and phase quadratures of an electromagnetic field have been proposed and experimentally realized in recent years. The multipartite entanglement of optical continuous variables provides flexible and reliable quantum resources for developing unconditional quantum information networks. In this paper, we review the generation schemes of the multipartite entangled states of optical continuous quantum variables and some applications in the quantum communication networks with emphasis on the experimental implementations.

Multipartite continuous-variable optical quantum entanglement: Generation and application

Warit Asavanant, Akira Furusawa

Quantum entanglement is a fundamental resource for various quantum applications and generation of large-scale entanglement is a key quantum technology. In recent years, continuous-variable optical systems have shown promising results in this direction, thanks to deterministic generation and multiplexing via rich degrees of freedom naturally occurring in the optical system. In this paper, we review the generation and applications of multipartite optical quantum entanglement. We begin with a theoretical overview of how to represent and verify multimode continuous-variable quantum states and entanglement. Then, we discuss the multiplexing technique in time, frequency, and spatial domains, and their applications in generation of large-scale entangled states. Afterward, we review the current status and development of the basic technology used in the generation of multipartite quantum entanglement. Finally, we discuss the applications of large-scale quantum entanglement and possible future perspectives. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quantum information with continuous variables

Samuel L. Braunstein, Peter van Loock

Quantum information is a rapidly advancing area of interdisciplinary research. It may lead to real-world applications for communication and computation unavailable without the exploitation of quantum properties such as nonorthogonality or entanglement. This article reviews the progress in quantum information based on continuous quantum variables, with emphasis on quantum optical implementations in terms of the quadrature amplitudes of the electromagnetic field.

Quantum Optics

Warit Asavanant, Akira Furusawa

Basic concepts of quantum optics are introduced in this chapter. In the beginning, we give a review of the basic quantum mechanics. Then, we perform quantization of an electromagnetic field, which naturally introduces the concept of mode and quadrature. After that, we introduce basic quantum states of light and their phase space representation. Quantum operations in the continuous-variable system and their universality are also explained. To obtain the values of the physical quantities, we have to measure our quantum systems. In the optical continuous-variable system, homodyne measurement and photon number measurement are among the most common measurements that are also discussed here. Finally, we introduce the concept of quantum entanglement, which is one of the central concepts in quantum computation.

Hybrid Entanglement of Light for Heterogeneous Quantum Networks

Olivier Morin, Hanna Le Jeannic, Kun Huang +5 more

In optical quantum information, one can distinguish two approaches: the discrete-variable (DV), involving single photons, for example c0|0〉 + c1|1〉, and the continuous-variable alternative (CV) encoding information into the quadrature components of the light field. In this CV approach, qubits can be implemented as superposition of coherent states of opposite phases, |cat ±〉 = |α〉 ± |−α〉, also called optical Schrodinger cat states. Combining these two approaches has recently led to a so-called optical hybrid quantum information aiming at merging the properties of both [1]. As both encodings have their own advantages and drawbacks, transferring information between them is a requirement which can be fulfill by teleportation using hybrid entanglement between particle-like qubits and wave-like qubits, i.e. entanglement of the form |0〉|α〉 + |1〉|−α〉.

Experimental Preparation of Quadripartite Cluster and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger Entangled States for Continuous Variables

Xiaolong Su, Aihong Tan, Xiaojun Jia +3 more

The cluster states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are two different types of multipartite quantum entangled states. We present the first experimental results generating continuous variable quadripartite cluster and GHZ entangled states of electromagnetic fields. Utilizing two amplitude-quadrature and two phase-quadrature squeezed states of light and linearly optical transformations, the two types of entangled states for amplitude and phase quadratures of light are experimentally produced. The combinations of the measured quadrature variances prove the full inseparability of the generated four subsystems. The presented experimental schemes show that the multipartite entanglement of continuous variables can be deterministically generated with the relatively simple implementation.
