EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATION OF THE STARK EFFECT BISTABILITIES IN NH_3 MOLECULAR GAS

Abstract

The experimental results of the optical bistability induced by the Stark effect are reported. The p_(32) laser line between 00°1 and 10°0 transition of CO_2 has been employed as source, and the NH_3 molecular gas as working medium. Under appropriate Stark fields and gas pressure, the optical bistability phenomena induced by the Stark eifect have been observed. The experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis.

Self-induced transparency with CO2 laser pulses in ammonia gas

C. David, W. M. Clark

Self-induced transparency effects, namely pulse delay and nonlinear transmission, are observed at two CO2 laser line and Stark-tuned NH3 absorber transition resonances; these are the P(32) CO2 laser line and the asQ(5, 3, 5) NH3 transition with a Stark field of 12.3 kV/cm at 10.7 μm and the R(6) CO2 laser line and the saQ(5, 5, 5) NH3 tuned with a 14.6-kV/cm field at 10.3 μm.

Mirrorless optical bistability induced by Stark effect at 10. 784 μm

Xuecai Yu

The Stark bistability and optical limiting utilizing the interaction between the R(18) line of an isotopic C13O216 laser and the asQ(6,6) transition in NH gas, are observed. The stead-state theory with Doppler broadening is analyzed. The experimental results are approximately consistent with the theoritical analyses.

Bistable optical devices for the isotopic C13O 216laser communication

Dayong Zhu, Zuowen Wan, Xuecai Yu +1 more

This paper reports observations of a Stark tunable bistable optical device (BOD) (Smith et al., 1977) which uses the interaction between the asQ(6,6) transitions in NH3 gas and the R(18) line of a (C-13)(O-16)2 laser. It is shown that optical bistability can be observed using this laser as the nonlinear element. The effect of Doppler broadening on the Stark bistability is shown via numerical calculations. The observed effect is consistent with results of the theoretical analysis.

Stark-Induced Optical Nonlinearity in Gaseous NH_2D and Optical Waves in Layered Media

Pochi Yeh

The first part of this work describes theoretical and experimental studies of Stark-induced three-wave mixing in gaseous NH2D. Application of a dc electric field to a gaseous system destroys the basic inversion symmetry and allows two-photon mixing processes to occur. A theoretical derivation of this effect under conditions of resonantly enhanced non-linearities is given for a three-level system. Calculations are presented for mixing of a CO2 laser with a 4 GHz microwaves in the molecule NH2D, producing single lower sideband radiation. Experimental observation of resonantly enhanced, dc-induced, three-wave mixing in gaseous NH2D is presented. The dependence of this effect on gas pressure, microwave frequency, applied dc field, and microwave power are presented and compared with theoretical predictions. The experiment was done at Hughes Research Laboratories by Abrams and his coworkers. The second part of this work describes the propagation of electromagnetic waves in periodic layered media. The propagation of electromagnetic radiation in periodically stratified media is considered. Media of finite, semi-finite and infinite extent are treated. A diagonalization of the unit cell translation operator is used to obtain exact solutions for the Bloch waves, the dispersion relations, and the band structure of the medium. The theory of electromagnetic Bloch waves in periodic stratified media is then applied to the problems of birefringence, and group velocity in these media. The relevance of periodic media to phase matching in nonlinear mixing experiments-and to laser action in the x-ray region is discussed. New types of guided waves such as Bragg guided waves and optical surface waves are theoretically predicted and experimentally observed.

Precise Measurements of Bistability in a CO2 Laser with Intracavity Saturable Absorber

E. Arimondo, Bianca Maria Dinelli, E. Menehi

Optical bistability in a laser with an intracavity saturable absorber is a phenomenon theoretically investigated firstly by Lugiato et al(1). The experimental observations in CO2 lasers(2,3) have provided clear evidence of the bistability phenomenon and shown that the absorber parameters could be determined from these observations. In this work a quantitative comparison between a theoretical description of optical bistability and the experimental results is presented for the first time. The parameters defining the laser cavity and the CO2 amplifying medium were measured carefully, and the bistability was observed and analyzed quantitatively as a function of the laser parameters.
