Abstract

The problem of coupling an external radiation field into a nonlinear waveguide cavity has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The transmission factor of this cavity was found to vary with the incident light power. Optical pulse shaping and bistable operation were observed experimetlly in this cavity.

Optical bistability in a nonlinear directional coupler

Carsten Thirstrup

In the nonlinear directional coupler, the optical field and the nonlinear material usually interact in a spatially and temporally local fashion and the device exhibits a nonlinear transmission characteristics, but it is not bistable. In this paper, it is shown theoretically that optical bistability in the input optical power is possible for the nonlinear directional coupler if the local phase change of the optical mode propagating through tile coupler is influenced by the excitation over the whole coupler. This condition can be satisfied in a coupler based on biased-pin-diodes comprising coupled asymmetric quantum wells in the i-region, Calculations show that in this configuration, the nonlinear directional coupler can exhibit sharp switching characteristics, low switching optical powers, optical bistability or bifurcation.

Nonlinear optical transmission in multiple quantum wells with ridged waveguides: Experiment and theory

V. Pellegrini, F. Fuso, E. Arimondo +4 more

We report on the observations of a nonlinear optical response in the radiation pulses transmitted by a multiple-quantum-well GaAs/${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As sample with a ridged waveguide configuration obtained by chemical etching. The nonlinear response is investigated through optical hysteresis obtained by plotting the transmitted power versus the input power. The physical conditions are complementary to those that characterize previous experiments in the field of optical bistability in multiple-quantum-well structures. The numerical simulations, obtained using the first-principles approach previously developed by some of us [G. P. Bava, F. Castelli, P. Debernardi, and L. A. Lugiato, Phys. Rev. A 45, 5180 (1992)], are in satisfactory qualitative and semiquantitative agreement with the experimental data. The numerical simulations also prove that optical bistability could be observed in ridged waveguide samples using cw laser sources.

Optical bistability and entanglement in two optically coupled cavities under the effect of a nonlinear medium

Surabhi Yadav, Vijay Bhatt, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee +1 more

We theoretically investigate optical bistability and entanglement in a hybrid nonlinear system of two coupled cavities via a single-mode waveguide. The left cavity contains an ensemble of N quantum dots (QDs) and a Kerr medium to enhance the nonlinearity as it causes to observe the bistable behaviour of the system. We study the Kerr medium, QD ensemble, and cavity coupling effect on bistability response shown by mean intracavity photons in the left cavity. In addition, we have shown entanglement between different subsystems and found that entanglement can be generated between the two coupled cavity photons, cavity photons, and QD ensembles. Additionally, we investigate the effect of different parameters on entanglement. Our findings show that Kerr nonlinearity and the hopping parameter between the two cavities can effectively control the optical properties of the proposed hybrid system, which can be used to design efficient optical devices and the entangled optical photons have applications such as quantum information transfer.

Characteristics of Optical Bistability of Nonlinear One-dimensional Photonic Crystal Waveguide

Ming Chen, Li Chun-Fei

We designed and manufactured an optical bistability waveguide device based on nonlinear one-dimensional photonic crystal used CdS_xSe_(1-x) doped glass. This kind of semiconductor doped glass has large nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear fast response time. The distribution of refractive index of the nonlinear one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide satisfies sine function. We obtained the nonlinear photonic crystal waveguide by exposure holography and etching techniques. Length of the photonic crystal waveguide is about 3 mm. The height of the peak-groove of the waveguide is 0.1 μm. According to our design, the center of bandgap of the one-dimensional photonic crystal lies at 514.5 nm while the power density of the incident light, the incident light was reflected by the photonic crystal. When the power density of the incident light increasing, the bandgap is shifting to the direc-tion of short wavelength due to the decreasing of the refractive index with the increasing of the incident power density, so more incident light is transmitted. In experiment, we used an active mode-locking pulse of Ar ion laser as the light source which wavelength is 514.5 nm, repeating frequency is 82 MHz and pulse width is 200 ps. The light beam was coupled into the device by prism with a laser average power of 1.28 W (in the case of nonlinear saturation operation, optimum coupling efficiency is about 6%). Pulse wave forms of incident light and transmitted from sample were recorded in turn by 7 904 oscilloscope. The optical bistability curve of input power density and output one is fitted by computer. We obtained the threshold power density of bistable switch to be 1.60×10~5 W/cm~2 (it is equivalent to average power of 77 mW) and both the rise and fall time are 63 ps. We used the Finite Difference Time Domain Method to obtain the characteristics of the bandgap shift with the incident power density increasing of the nonlinear photonic crystal and calculate the optical bistability curve of this device. In theory, the threshold power density of bistable switch is about 1.40×10~5 W/cm~2 and the switch time is about 50 ps. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental ones. This device is a new and feasible one for optical information process and optical computing in the future.

Effect of mode coupling on optical bistability in a bidirectional ring cavity

Govind Prasad Agrawal

In a ring cavity the counter-propagating modes are coupled through a homogeneously broadened atomic medium. The mode coupling is shown to introduce novel features in the transmission characteristics of two simultaneous bistable switches. We suggest suitable materials and discuss possible applications of the predicted effect.
