Abstract

A theoretical study of the steady mirorless optical bistability, based on the photoisomerization of azobenzene, was reports.Firstly, the transmissions due to the saturated absorption of azobenzene molecules have been calculated. Then, the mirrorless optical bistability processes have been calculated under different absorption cross_sections σ_T and σ_C for trans and cis azobenzene molecules respectively. Finally, the thermal constant K and its influence on the optical bistability has been discussed.

The characteristic of optical bistability switching of azobenzene molecules is discussed.First,we compute the coefficient of reverse saturable absorption based on the model of photoisomerization of azobenzene molecules.Second,we simulate and compute the process of bistability switching based on reverse saturable absorption. The result shows that the reverse saturable absorption based on photoisomerization of azobenzene molecules can realize full optical switches of bistability. We also discusse the Trans isomer σT,the Cis isomer σC and the thermal constant K to the optical bistability influence.

MIRRORLESS OPTICAL BISTABILITY DUE TO PHOTOINDUCED EXCITON BLEACHING OF POLYMERS

Hui Wang, Lan Wen-guang, Lin Wei-Zhu +2 more

Based on the established theory of photoinduced exciton bleaching of the polymers with nondegenerated ground state,we calculated the transient mirrorless optical bistability of photoexcitation and relaxation processes in the polymers. The results show that the transient saturation absorption mirrorless optical bistabilities and the increasing absorption mirrorless optical bistabilities can be obtained from the ultrafast excitation and relaxation processes in the polymers with nondegenerate ground state, and the switching time of the optical bistabilities is of the order of fs or ps.With the increase of the delay time of the probe pulse relative to pump pulse, the nature of mirrorless optical bistability can change from the saturation absorption optical bistability to increasing absorption optical bistability, and the rate of change is proportional to the speed of relaxation of the photoinduced exciton.

Model for mirrorless optical multiple bistability due to increasing and decreasing absorption

Joseph W. Haus, Chi C. Sung, C. M. Bowden +1 more

Heat conduction and propagation of the electromagnetic field as well as temperature-dependent absorption are considered in a model for mirrorless optical bistability. The effects of temperature and laser-frequency detuning are calculated and discussed. It is shown that the multiple bistability of output intensity as a function of input intensity can be induced and controlled by the temperature boundary conditions. It is emphasized that changes in these boundary conditions determine the details of the transmission characteristics.

Models for Absorption-induced Optical Bistability in CdS and Multiple Quantum Well GaAs

Joseph W. Haus, Chi C. Sung, Y. C. Li +2 more

Mirrorless optical bistability has been established in CdS1 and in multiple quantum well (MQW) GaAs structures2. The mechanism responsible for the bistable behavior in these semiconductors is the coupling between the temperature distribution and the electric field intensity in the sample. In these semiconductors, the mechanism is simple enough that a quantitative analysis should be possible. However, a successful model of bistability in these systems must await a careful experimental analysis of the thermal boundary conditions3. With this caveat we have proceeded with the theoretical development. Steady-state results for CdS and MQW GaAs are presented.

Mirrorless optical bistability in molecular aggregates with dipole–dipole interaction

V. V. Gusev

Abstract The possibility of mirrorless optical bistability in molecular aggregates with dipole–dipole interaction was studied theoretically. Dimers and ordered layers of the Langmuir–Blodgett type or J‐aggregates consisting of identical polyatomic fluorescent molecules were chosen as molecular aggregate models. The investigation was carried out on the basis of the Bogolubov equation chain for the density matrix of molecular aggregates and its components. It is shown that the fluorescence intensity and absorption ability are described by bistable and hysteresislike behaviour when the parameters of the molecular aggregate and pumping radiation are chosen suitably. An analysis of the bistability mechanism in such aggregates is given. Possibilities of controlling one light beam by another and switching polychromatic light flow by using a bistable device based on molecular aggregates are discussed.

Mirrorless optical bistability in a nonlinear absorbing dielectric film

Kevin L. Stokes, Ashok Puri

The optical transmissivity of a mirrorless, nonlinear, absorbing dielectric thin film is investigated numerically. The dielectric function in the film region is dependent on the intensity of the electromagnetic field. Multivalued solutions of transmissivity as a function of incident power are calculated for the steady-state wave equation. The numerical solution is applied to two different model dielectric functions. As the absorption parameter is increased, larger values of incident intensity are required to switch the systems between stable output states. Also, the peak values of transmissivity are reduced as the absorption is increased.
