Abstract

Based on the Gross-Pitaevskii theory, for a Bose-condensed gas confined in a harmonic trap and in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, the relationship of the Gaussian width of the sub-condenses and the intensity of 1D-optical lattices potential is studied by using the G-P energy functional and the variational method. For the ideal non-interacting model, the Gaussian width of the sub-condenses is analyzed. Concerning interacting Bose-condensed atoms, the Gaussian approximate model is advanced and the analytic expression of the Gaussian width with the intensity of optical lattices potential is obtained. And then, those analytical results are compared with the straightforward numerical calculation. It indicates that the Gaussian approximate model is closer to the results of the numerical solution, and both are reaching unanimity with the intensity of ID-optical lattices potential increasing.

Two-species Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice: analytical approximate formulae

R. Cipolatti, Leonardo Villegas-Lelovsky, Ming-Chiang Chung +1 more

Abstract Employing a general variational method and perturbation theory, we derived explicit solutions for the description of one-dimensional two species Bose–Einstein condensates confined by a harmonic trap potential in an optical lattice. We consider the system of two coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations (GPE) and derive explicit expressions for the chemical potentials and wavefunctions in terms of the atom–atom interaction parameters and laser intensity. We have compared our results with the numerical solutions of the GPE and performed a quantitative analysis for the both considered methods. We underline the importance of the obtained explicit solutions to characterize the density profile or degree of miscibility of the two components.

Interference of Bose-condensed gas in a 1D optical lattice

Xu Zhi-Jun, Dongmei Wang, Li Zhen +1 more

For the Bose-condensed gas in a combined potential consisting of an axially-symmetric harmonic magnetic trap and one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii (G-P) equation and the propagator method, we study the formation of matter-wave interference upon releasing the condensate from the combined potential. The analytical result of the wave function for matter wave interference at any time t is given, and the relation between the interference fringe period and the optical lattice period is obtained. The interference pattern of Bose-condensed gas in the optical lattices is analogous to the multiple slit interference pattern in optics, and coincides with the results of experiment performed by Andrews et al. and Peil et al. and the numerical solution of the G-P equation by Sadhan K. Adhikari.

Solution of the ground state wave function of Bose-condensed gas in a harmonic trap based on the Gross-Pitaevskii function

Xu Zhi-Jun, Shi Jian-Qing, Li Zhen +2 more

Based on the Gross-Pitaevskii(G-P) energy functional and variational method, we present a new method to find the ground state wave function for Bose-condensed gas in a harmonic trap at zero temperature. With this method we are able to find the analytic expression of ground state wave function and explore the relevant quantities, such as energy, chemical potential and so on. These results agree well with previous ground state numerical solutions of the G-P equation given by Dalfovo et al. Under the large number of particles N limit for repulsive interaction, our results and Thomas-Fermi approximation model approach to reaching unanimity. This new method is simple compared to other methods used to solve numerically the G-P equation, and one can obtained the analytic and reliable results.

Compressibility, Bloch bands and elementary excitations

Meret Krämer, S. Stringari

We discuss the Bloch-state solutions of the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation and of the Bogoliubov equations for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice. The results for the compressibility, effective mass and velocity of sound are analysed as a function of the lattice depth and of the strength of the two-body interaction. The band structure of the spectrum of elementary excitations is compared with the one exhibited by the stationary solutions (Bloch bands). Moreover, the numerical calculations are compared with the analytic predictions of the tight binding approximation. We also discuss the role of quantum fluctuations and show that the condensate exhibits 3D, 2D or 1D features depending on the lattice depth and on the number of particles occupying each potential well. We finally show how, using a local density approximation, our results can be applied to study the behaviour of the gas in the presence of harmonic trapping.

Evolution of Matter Wave Interference of Bose-Condensed Gas in a 1D Optical Lattice

Xu Zhi-Jun, Dongmei Zhang

For a Bose-condensed gas in a combined potential consisting of an axially-symmetric harmonic magnetic trap and one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, using the mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii (G-P) equation and the propagator method, we obtain the analytical result of the order parameter for matter wave interference at any time. The evolution of the interference pattern under a variation of the relative phase Δϕ between successive subcondensates trapped on an optical lattices is also studied. For Δϕ = π, the interference pattern is symmetric with two sharp peaks, which are symmetrically located on a straight line on both sides of a vacant central peak and moving apart from each other. This work is in agreement with available experimental results.

Dimensional Reduction and Localization of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Quasi-1D Bichromatic Optical Lattice

Luca Salasnich, Sadhan K. Adhikari

We analyze the localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential by numerically solving the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation (1D GPE).We first derive the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation from the dimensional reduction of the 3D quantum field theory of interacting bosons obtaining two coupled differential equations (for axial wave fuction and space-time dependent transverse width) which reduce to the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation under strict conditions. Then, by using the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation we report the suppression of localization in the interacting Bose-Einstein condensate when the repulsive scattering length between bosonic atoms is sufficiently large.
