Abstract

Based on the Gross-Pitaevskii(G-P) energy functional and variational method, we present a new method to find the ground state wave function for Bose-condensed gas in a harmonic trap at zero temperature. With this method we are able to find the analytic expression of ground state wave function and explore the relevant quantities, such as energy, chemical potential and so on. These results agree well with previous ground state numerical solutions of the G-P equation given by Dalfovo et al. Under the large number of particles N limit for repulsive interaction, our results and Thomas-Fermi approximation model approach to reaching unanimity. This new method is simple compared to other methods used to solve numerically the G-P equation, and one can obtained the analytic and reliable results.

Based on the energy functional and variational method, we present a new method to investigate the ground state properties for a weakly interacting Bose-condensed gas in an anisotropic harmonic trap at zero temperature. With this method we are able to find the analytic expression of the ground-state wavefunction and to explore the relevant quantities, such as energy, chemical potential, and the aspect ratio of the velocity distribution. These results agree well with previous ground state numerical solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation given by Dalfovo et al. [Phys. Rev. A 53 (1996) 2477] This new method is simple compared to other methods used to solve numerically the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, and one can obtain analytic and reliable results.

A solution to the ground and single vortex states of Bose-condensed gas in an axially symmetric harmonic trap

Xu Zhi-Jun, Shi Jian-Qing, Lin Guo-Cheng +1 more

For a Bose-condensed gas in an axially symmetric harmonic trap at zero temperature, a new trial wave function of the ground and single vortex states is considered based on the mean-field energy functional and variational method. Once the wave function is known, we can explore the particle-number dependence of relevant quantities, such as energy, chemical potential, aspect ratio of the velocity distribution and critical angular velocity for production of vortices. These results agree well with previous numerical solutions of the G-P equation given by Dalfovo et al.

Dong Lv

The quasi-Gauss model is applied to quasi-2D Bose gas.Through solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the quasi-Gauss wave function is obtained, which agrees well with the previous numerical solution and Thomas-Fermi approximation model. In addition, through solving the energy function,we get the ground state energy and the chemical potential. The influence of dimension change to the nature of the system is analyzed.

Theory of the condensed state

C. J. Pethick, H. Smith

In the present chapter we consider the structure of the Bose–Einstein condensed state in the presence of interactions. Our discussion is based on the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, which describes the zero-temperature properties of the non-uniform Bose gas when the scattering length a is much less than the mean interparticle spacing. We shall first derive the Gross–Pitaevskii equation at zero temperature by treating the interaction between particles in a mean-field approximation (Sec. 6.1). Following that, in Sec. 6.2 we discuss the ground state of atomic clouds in a harmonic-oscillator potential. We compare results obtained by variational methods with those derived in the Thomas-Fermi approximation, in which the kinetic energy operator is neglected in the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The Thomas–Fermi approximation fails near the surface of a cloud, and in Sec. 6.3 we calculate the surface structure using the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. Finally, in Sec. 6.4 we determine how the condensate wave function ‘heals’ when subjected to a localized disturbance. The Gross–Pitaevskii equation In the previous chapter we have shown that the effective interaction between two particles at low energies is a constant in the momentum representation, U 0 = 4πħ 2 a / m . In coordinate space this corresponds to a contact interaction U 0 δ( r – r ′), where r and r ′ are the positions of the two particles. To investigate the energy of man y-body states we adopt a Hartree or mean-field approach, and assume that the wave function is a symmetrized product of single-particle wave functions.

Ground state properties and elementary excitation of85Rb Bose-Einstein condensate: analytical method for modified Thomas-Fermi model with large-gas-parameter

Moumita Gupta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

Bose-Einstein condensation in trapped gases of 85 Rb atoms can now be obtained in the large gas-parameter region in presence of Feshbach resonance and the gas density which is characterized by peak gas parameter x pk can attain the value ~ 10 -2 . For such large gas-parameter, the first correction term to the Bogoliubov energy functional is considered to give modified Gross-Pitaevskii (MGP) equation. In this work analytical expressions for the chemical potential, the density of particles and the excitation frequency of the monopole mode have been derived in Thomas-Fermi(TF) approximated approach to the MGP equation (modified TF approach) following method of higher order iteration for Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of atoms in spherically symmetric trap. We have also solved the MGP equation by using Runge-Kutta method for integration of nonlinear differential equation considering spherically symmetric trap. The analytical results for chemical potential and density of particles for BEC of 10 3 and 10 4 85 Rb atoms in a spherically symmetric trap are in very good agreement with the numerical results from MGP equation at low as well as at large scattering length i.e, at large gas-parameter region. The frequency of monopole mode calculated using the density of particles in the ground state (found out in higher order iterative method) are also in very good agreement with the existing numerical results. The difference between the analytical and numerical results decreases as the value of scattering length i.e, gas-parameter is increased.
