Abstract

By using Co2 laser melting to process erbium-doped fiber tip,a high spherical erbium-doped microsphere cavity is formed through surface tension. The size of erbium-doped microsphere is 21μm.By adjusting the location of erbium-doped microspheres precisely, using 980nm laser as the pumping source, the single mode erbium ion photon fluorescence spectra is obtainod,of which the central wavelength is around 1.55μm.It proves the frequency selection role of micro-cavity.Through further analysis of the spectrum, the Q of microsphere 108 is calculatecl, and the free spectral range in real measarment is basically consistent with that in theoretical analysis.

Using CO2laser metal method process the top of erbium-doped tapered fiber, which formed by stretching a standard optical fiber (SMF-125) while heating it with a hydrogen flame. The top of tapered fiber formed erbium-doped microsphere cavity with higher spherical by its surface tension when heating is stopped. The size of erbium-doped microsphere is 21µm. The position of erbium-doped microsphere is accurately adjusted between the pump power and monochromatic spectrometer so that it can be easily excited by 980 nm and 1480 nm infrared light. Excited erbium ions produce energy level transition and a number of sharp transmission spectrums are observed around the center wavelength of 1550nm. It expanded the spectrum wide and proved the frequency selection role of micro-cavity. Further analysis of the experimental results, we obtained the quality factor Q=4.4×108through calculating the transmission spectrum which is consistent with the theoretical value largely.

Investigation on morphology-dependent resonances in Er~(3+) doped phosphate glass microsphere with light quantum mechanics

Liang Wei

The development of microspherical cavity theory is introduced, and the microspherical cavity is analyzed with light quantum mechanics. The 1533 nm fluorescence spectrum of the Er3+ doped phosphate glass microsphere(about 15 μm in diameter) was measured under laser excitation of 488 nm.The phenomenon of the morphology-dependent resonances of the fluorescence spectrum in the glass microsphere and its formation mechanism were observed and analyzed. The fluorescence spectra of the Er3+doped phosphate glass microsphere were compared with those of corresponding bulk glass. The single-mode oscillation amplitude generated by the Er3+ doped phosphate glass microsphere was obtained in the experiment.

Numerical simulation and software implementation of erbium-doped fiber source

Chengxiang Liu

Based on the energy level of erbium ions in the glass matrix,we analyzed the work mechanism of erbium-doped fiber super-fluorescent light source. The physical model of light source was set up,which was described by propagation equations of pump light and signal light along the erbium-fiber. By dividing the fluorescence spectra into 10 wavelengths, the issue was solving the boundary value problem of 21-dimensional ordinary differential equations. We translated the boundary value problems into an initial value problem using shooting method. The equations were solved using Runge-Kutta method. We wrote a program to implement the algorithms using Visual C++. The numerical simulation and software can provide directions for researching on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and lasers.

The on near Gaussian-shaped spectrum Erbium-doped fiber super-flourescent source was studied. The self-coherence function of Gaussian-shaped spectrum and the change of mean wavelength under different temperatures were theoretically analyzed.Using the double-pass forward configuration, the Gaussian-shaped spectrum was obtained with certain Erbium-doped fiber length.Meanwhile, pump powers could be adjusted to optimize the intrinsic thermal coefficient of Erbium-doped fiber. Finally, under the condition with erbium-doped fiber length of 10.05 m,LD power of 172 mW,the whole optical path(except pumping LD and the driving) in the environmental temperature from-40 ℃ to 60 ℃,the near Gaussian-shaped spectrum Erbium-doped fiber source with 66.651 ppm mean wavelength stability was obtained.

Thermo-Optical Tuning of Whispering Gallery Modes in Erbium:Ytterbium Doped Glass Microspheres to Arbitrary Probe Wavelengths

Amy Watkins, Jonathan M. Ward, Síle Nic Chormaic

We present experimental results on an all-optical, thermally-assisted technique for broad range tuning of microsphere cavity resonance modes to arbitrary probe wavelengths. An erbium:ytterbium co-doped phosphate glass (Schott IOG-2) microsphere is pumped at 978 nm via the supporting stem and the heat generated by absorption of the pump light expands the cavity and changes the refractive index. This is a robust tuning method that decouples the pump from the probe and allows fine tuning of the microsphere's whispering gallery modes. Pump/probe experiments were performed to demonstrate thermo-optical tuning to specific probe wavelengths, including the 5 S 1/2 F= 3 to 5 P 3/2 F'= 4 laser cooling transition of rubidium-85. This is of particular interest for cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED)-type experiments, while the broad tuning range achievable is useful for integrated photonic devices, including sensors and modulators.
