Abstract

We report on a new derivation of the extended Feynman propagator for the harmonic oscil-lator at and beyond caustics using the explicit eigenfunction expansion for the propagator. It is shown that the Maslov corrections beyond caustics are directly determined by the parityof the eigenfunctions. The phase correction and related effect of the propagator of a chargedparticle in constant magnetic field and in the presence of Chern-Simon backgraound gaugefield are studied.

EXTENDED FEYNMAN FORMULA FOR THE HARMONIC OSCILLATOR BY THE DISCRETE TIME METHOD

KUNIO FUNAHASHI

We revisit the extended Feynman formula for the harmonic oscillator beyond and at caustics. The extension has been made by some authors, however, it is not obtained by the discrete formulation of path integral, which we consider the most reliable regularization of it. We derive the result by, especially at caustics, more rigorous method than previous.

Exact evaluation of the propagator beyond and at caustics for a charged particle in a constant magnetic field

Bin Kang Cheng

It is first shown that the propagator of a charged particle in a constant external magnetic field is related to the propagator of a one-dimensional driven harmonic oscillator with memory. The memory term can be removed by introducing the auxiliary force term and then by integrating it out. By using this new formula for a driven harmonic oscillator, a generalization of Horv\'athy-Feynman formula, we finally evaluate exactly the propagator beyond and at caustics of our dynamical system.

Extended Feynman Formula for the Harmonic Oscillator by the Discrete Time Method

Kunio Funahashi

We calculate the Feynman formula for the harmonic oscillator beyond and at caustics by the discrete formulation of path integral. The extension has been made by some authors, however, it is not obtained by the method which we consider the most reliable regularization of path integral. It is shown that this method leads to the result with, especially at caustics, more rigorous derivation than previous. 1

The Maslov correction in the semiclassical Feynman integral

P. A. Horváthy

Abstract The Maslov correction to the wave function is the jump of $$ \left( { - \frac{\pi } {2}} \right) $$ in the phase when the system passes through a caustic. This can be explained by studying the second variation and the geometry of paths, as conveniently seen in Feynman’s path integral framework. The results can be extended to any system using the semiclassical approximation. The 1-dimensional harmonic oscillator is used to illustrate the different derivations reviewed here.

Fock Bargmann space and Feynman propagator of charged harmonic oscillator in a constant magnetic field.

Mehdi Hage-Hassan

The Feynman propagator of charged harmonic oscillator in a constant magnetic field is found for the first time by a direct calculation using Fock Bargmann space and a new generating function of two dimensional harmonic oscillators. The calculations involve well-known integrals which an undergraduate should understand.

Exact evaluation of the propagator for the damped harmonic oscillator

Bin Kang Cheng

Using the Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian for the quantum dissipative system, the author expresses the propagator as the modified Feynman path integral in the configuration space, which can then be evaluated for the damped harmonic oscillator by Montroll's method. The propagator of the damped harmonic oscillator can also be calculated beyond and at caustics with the help of Horvathy-Feynman formula. The new results are confirmed by investigating the classical paths joining two fixed end-point positions, Finally the author obtains the time-dependent wavefunctions from the propagator of the dynamical system.

Abstract The Maslov correction to the wave function is the jump of (−π2) \left( { - \frac{\pi } {2}} \right) (−2π) in the phase when the system passes through a caustic. This can be explained by studying the second variation and the geometry of paths, as conveniently seen in Feynman’s path integral framework.
