Exact Propagator of a Two Dimensional Anisotropic Harmonic Oscillator in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

Abstract

In this paper we solve exactly the problem of the spectrum and Feynman propagator of a charged particle submitted to both an anharmonic oscillator in the plane and a constant and homogeneous magnetic field of arbitrary strength aligned with the perpendicular direction to the plane. As we shall see in the beginning of the letter, the Hamiltonian, being a quadratic form, is easily diagonalizable and the Classical Action can be used to construct the exact Feynman Propagator using the Stationary Phase Approximation. The result is useful for the treatment of quasi two dimensional samples in the field of magnetic effects in nano-structures and quantum optics. The presented solution, after minor extensions, can also be used for motion in three dimensions, and in fact it has been used for years in such cases. Also it can be used as a good exercise of a Feynman Path Integral that can be calculated easily with just the help of the Classical Action.

Fock Bargmann space and Feynman propagator of charged harmonic oscillator in a constant magnetic field.

Mehdi Hage-Hassan

The Feynman propagator of charged harmonic oscillator in a constant magnetic field is found for the first time by a direct calculation using Fock Bargmann space and a new generating function of two dimensional harmonic oscillators. The calculations involve well-known integrals which an undergraduate should understand.

Lie algebraic approach and quantum treatment of an anisotropic charged particle via the quadratic invariant

M. Sebawe Abdalla, P. G. L. Leach

We consider the problem of a charged harmonic oscillator under the influence of a constant magnetic field. The system is assumed to be anisotropic and the magnetic field is applied along z-axis. A canonical transformation is invoked to remove the interaction term and the system is reduced to a model contains two uncoupled harmonic oscillators. Two classes of real and complex quadratic invariants (constants of motion) are obtained. We employ the Lie algebraic technique to find the most general solution for the wave-function for both real and complex invariants. The quadratic invariant is also used to derive two classes of creation and annihilation operators from which the wave-functions in the coherent states and number states are obtained. Some discussion related to the advantage of using the quadratic invariants to solve the Cauchy problem instead of the direct use of the Hamiltonian itself is also given.

Path integral for confined Dirac fermions in a constant magnetic field

Abdeldjalil Merdaci, Ahmed Jellal, L. Chétouani

In this paper, we consider Dirac fermion confined in harmonic potential and submitted to a constant magnetic field. The corresponding solutions of the energy spectrum are obtained by using the path integral techniques. For this, we begin by establishing a symmetric global projection, which provides a symmetric form for the Green function. Based on this, we show that it is possible to end up with the propagator of the harmonic oscillator for one charged particle. After some transformations, we derive the normalized wave functions and the eigenvalues in terms of different physical parameters and quantum numbers. By interchanging quantum numbers, we show that our solutions have interesting properties. The density of current and the nonrelativistic limit are analyzed where different conclusions are obtained. Finally, the completeness of the Dirac oscillator eigenfunctions is proved by using the standard properties of the generalized Laguerre polynomials.

Feynman Path Integral of a charged anisotropic HO in crossed electric and magnetic fields. Alternative calculational methods

Cyril Belardinelli

In the present paper the author evaluates the path integral of a charged anisotropic Harmonic Oscillator (HO) in crossed electric and magnetic fields by two alternative methods. Both methods enable a rather formal calculation and circumvent some mathematical delicate issues such as the occurrence of an infinite Normalization constant and ambiguities with path integral calculations when magnetic fields are present. The \emph{$1^{\text{st}}$} method uses complex Fourier series and a regularization scheme via the Riemann-$ζ$-function. The \emph{$2^{\text{nd}}$} method evaluates the path integral by transforming the Lagrangian to a uniformly rotating system. The latter method uses the fact that the Lorentz- and Coriolis force have the same functional form. Both forces cancel each other within the rotating system given that it rotates with Larmor frequency $ω_{L}$. This fact simplifies considerably the calculation of the path integral.

Two-dimensional oscillator in a magnetic field

T. K. Rebane

The energy and eigenstate spectrum of a charged particle in the electric field of a 2D anisotropic oscillator and in a uniform magnetic field is considered. The exact analytic solution to the problem is obtained for an arbitrary magnetic field strength. The characteristic features of variation of the energy spectrum depending on the magnetic field strength are analyzed. The results of this study are of interest for the quantum-mechanical theory of magnetism and can be used to simulate the magnetic properties of atoms and molecules.
