Two-dimensional oscillator in a magnetic field

Abstract

The energy and eigenstate spectrum of a charged particle in the electric field of a 2D anisotropic oscillator and in a uniform magnetic field is considered. The exact analytic solution to the problem is obtained for an arbitrary magnetic field strength. The characteristic features of variation of the energy spectrum depending on the magnetic field strength are analyzed. The results of this study are of interest for the quantum-mechanical theory of magnetism and can be used to simulate the magnetic properties of atoms and molecules.

Exact Propagator of a Two Dimensional Anisotropic Harmonic Oscillator in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

José M. Cerveró

In this paper we solve exactly the problem of the spectrum and Feynman propagator of a charged particle submitted to both an anharmonic oscillator in the plane and a constant and homogeneous magnetic field of arbitrary strength aligned with the perpendicular direction to the plane. As we shall see in the beginning of the letter, the Hamiltonian, being a quadratic form, is easily diagonalizable and the Classical Action can be used to construct the exact Feynman Propagator using the Stationary Phase Approximation. The result is useful for the treatment of quasi two dimensional samples in the field of magnetic effects in nano-structures and quantum optics. The presented solution, after minor extensions, can also be used for motion in three dimensions, and in fact it has been used for years in such cases. Also it can be used as a good exercise of a Feynman Path Integral that can be calculated easily with just the help of the Classical Action.

Exact solution to two-dimensional isotropic charged harmonic oscillator in uniform magnetic field in non-commutative phase space

GAO-FENG WEI, Long Chao-Yun, Long Zheng-Wen +1 more

In this paper, the isotropic charged harmonic oscillator in uniform magnetic field is researched in the non-commutative phase space; the corresponding exact energy is obtained, and the analytic eigenfunction is presented in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function. It is shown that in the non-commutative space, the isotropic charged harmonic oscillator in uniform magnetic field has the similar behaviors to the Landau problem.

A charged spinless particle in scalar-vector harmonic oscillators with uniform magnetic and Aharonov-Bohm flux fields

Sameer M. Ikhdair, B. J. Falaye

The two-dimensional solution of the spinless Klein–Gordon (KG) equation for scalar–vector harmonic oscillator potentials with and without the presence of constant perpendicular magnetic and Aharonov–Bohm (AB) flux fields is studied within the asymptotic function analysis and Nikiforov–Uvarov (NU) method. The exact energy eigenvalues and normalized wave functions are analytically obtained in terms of potential parameters, magnetic field strength, AB flux field and magnetic quantum number. The results obtained by using different Larmor frequencies are compared with the results in the absence of both magnetic field (ωL = 0) and AB flux field (ξ = 0) case. Effects of external fields on the non-relativistic energy eigenvalues and wave functions solutions are also precisely presented.

Investigation of a harmonic oscillator in a magnetic field with damping and time dependent noncommutativity

Manjari Dutta, Shreemoyee Ganguly, Sunandan Gangopadhyay

This work is devoted to find the eigenstates of a two dimensional damped harmonic oscillator in the presence of an external magnetic field varying with respect to time with a time dependent spatial noncommutativity. It is observed that there are some specific choices of the damping factor, the time dependent frequency of the oscillator and the time dependent external magnetic field for which one can obtain interesting solutions of the time dependent noncommutative parameters. These solutions follow from the non-linear Ermakov-Pinney equation. We then obtain exact analytic forms for the phase which relates the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian with the eigenstates of the Lewis invariant. An important aspect of this study is to see the relationship between the damping and the applied magnetic field on the energy profile of the system. For this we compute the expectation value of the Hamiltonian. These are found to vary with time for different solutions of the Ermakov-Pinney equation corresponding to different choices of the damping factor, the time dependent frequency of the oscillator and the time dependent applied magnetic field. Finally, we compare our results with those in the absence of the magnetic field to determine the effect of the applied field on our system.

Landau-Stark states and cyclotron-Bloch oscillations of a quantum particle

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Giorgio Mantica

Recent experimental progress in the creation of synthetic electric and magnetic fields, acting on cold atoms in a two-dimensional lattice, has attracted renewed interest to the problem of a quantum particle in the Hall configuration. The present work contains a detailed analysis of the eigenstates of this system, called Landau-Stark states, and of the associated dynamical phenomenon of cyclotron-Bloch oscillations. It is shown that Landau-Stark states and cyclotron-Bloch oscillations crucially depend on two factors. The first is the orientation of the electric field relative to the primary axes of the lattice. The second is ratio between the frequencies of Bloch and cyclotron oscillations, that is also the ratio between the magnitudes of electric and magnetic fields. The analysis is first carried out in the tight-binding approximation, where the magnetic field is characterized by the Peierls phase entering the hopping matrix elements. Agreement of this analysis with the full quantum theory is also studied.

Quantum behavior of a charged particle in an axial magnetic field

Ashok Das, J. Frenkel, S. H. Pereira +1 more

We study some aspects of the quantum theory of a charged particle moving in a time-independent, unidirectional magnetic field. When the field is uniform, we make a few clarifying remarks on the use of angular momentum eigenstates and momentum eigenstates with the diamagnetism of a free electron gas as an example. When the field is nonuniform but weakly varying, we discuss both perturbative and nonperturbative methods for studying a quantum mechanical system. As an application, we derive the quantized energy levels of a charged particle in a Helmholtz coil, which go over to the usual Landau levels in the limit of a uniform field.
