Abstract

The square-lattice Ising model is the simplest system showing phase transitions (the transition between the paramagnetic phase and the ferromagnetic phase and the transition between the paramagnetic phase and the antiferromagnetic phase) and critical phenomena at finite temperatures. The exact solution of the squarelattice Ising model with free boundary conditions is not known for systems of arbitrary size. For the first time, the exact solution of the Ising model on the square lattice with free boundary conditions is obtained after classifying all ) spin configurations with the microcanonical transfer matrix. Also, the phase transitions and critical phenomena of the square-lattice Ising model are discussed using the exact solution on the square lattice with free boundary conditions.

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The exact partition functions of the Ising model on L × L square lattices with free boundary conditions are evaluated up to L = 19 using microcanonical transfer matrix. The critical behavior of the Ising antiferromagnet is analyzed using the partition function zeros for free boundary conditions and compared with the results for periodic boundary conditions.

Exact partition functions of the ising model on L × L square lattices with free boundary conditions up to L = 22

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The exact partition functions of the Ising model on L × L square lattices with free boundary conditions are evaluated up to L = 22 for the first time by using a microcanonical transfer matrix and counting all possible spin states. The total number of states is 2 22×22 = 2 484 ≈ 5.0 × 10 145 for L = 22. Using the partition function zeros in the complex temperature plane of the Ising model on L × L square lattices with free boundary conditions, we analyze the critical behavior of the square-lattice Ising antiferromagnet and compare them with the results for periodic boundary conditions (the most popular boundary conditions). Our results show clearly that free boundary conditions are much more efficient than periodic boundary conditions in the study of an antiferromagnet.

Exact Computation of the Triangular-Lattice Ising Model with Eighteen Spins on a Side

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The Ising model, consisting of magnetic spins, is the most important system in understanding phase transitions and critical phenomena. For the first time, the exact integer values for the density of states of the triangular-lattice Ising model with eighteen spins on a side and free boundary conditions are evaluated. Also, the exact specific heats are obtained for the triangular-lattice Ising ferromagnet and antiferromagnet at the same time.

On Ising models

Hoede, C., Zandvliet, Henricus J.W.

For various Ising models two approaches are discussed, one is that of simulating lattices, also called gauging on exact equations, the other is that of calculating analytical expressions for the boundary free energy of Ising lattices. The first approach allows to conjecture a solution for some Ising models, that have sofar not been solved, once some exact partial result for the problem is known. The second approach aims at furnishing such a partial result in the form of a condition for the critical temperature. An example of such a result was recently given for the 2D Ising square lattice with nearest and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. The critical line that separates the ordered (ferromagnetic) phase from the disordered (paramagnetic) phase showed good agreement in the moderate and strong nearest neighbor coupling limit with several results obtained by Monte Carlo, transfer matrix and series expansion results. We extend the discussion of the critical line, finding an excellent fit, now also in other points, like the Padé point, as well as cusp behavior at the Onsager point where the lattice decouples into two 2D square lattices with only nearest-neighbor interaction. Combination of this result with a geometrical argument in the simulation approach leads to a critical exponent $2-\sqrt{2} \approx 0.5858,$ comparable to the exponent $4/7 \approx 0.5714$ found from renormalization arguments.

Magnetic Phase Transition in the 2-D Ising Model

Adam Mixter

Using the Ising Model, the phase transition between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases of a 2-D square spin lattice are explored. A phase transition into the ferromagnetic phase occurs when the temperature of the system falls below some critical value. The ferromagnetic phase is characterized by a non-zero magnetization on the macroscopic level. Using the Mote Carlo method to obtain system's configurations (i.e., sets of microstates) in thermal equilibrium, we will explore system's macroscopic properties such as magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat capacity as functions of temperature. We will evaluate the transition temperature, and discuss how the lattice size affects the results.

The square lattice Ising model on the rectangle I: finite systems

Alfred Hucht

Abstract The partition function of the square lattice Ising model on the rectangle with open boundary conditions in both directions is calculated exactly for arbitrary system size L × M and temperature. We start with the dimer method of Kasteleyn, McCoy and Wu, construct a highly symmetric block transfer matrix and derive a factorization of the involved determinant, effectively decomposing the free energy of the system into two parts, F ( L , M ) = F s t r i p ( L , M ) + F s t r i p r e s ( L , M ) , where the residual part F s t r i p r e s ( L , M ) contains the nontrivial finite- L contributions for fixed M . It is given by the determinant of a M / 2 × M / 2 matrix and can be mapped onto an effective spin model with M Ising spins and long-range interactions. While F s t r i p r e s ( L , M )
