Abstract

The transient properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are studied with different probe pulse energies for the first time in the 3S 3P 3/2 4D ladder type three level system of sodium atom. The EIT effect would be reduced with the increase of the probe pulse energy. Theoretical calculation is carried out by solving the time dependent matrix equation. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculation.

Investigation of Transient Properties of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency with Different Pump Laser Energy

Xihua Yang

The transient properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with different pump laser energies in a Λ-type three-level system are studied by solving the time-dependent matrix equation. The time evolution of the probe laser absorption, the population of the three levels and the coherent term ρ 23 are analyzed. It is shown that transient amplification without inversion can be realized with high pump laser energy and that transient EIT would reduce and transient amplification without inversion would disappear with the decrease of the pump laser energy. Since the probe absorption depends on the product of Rabi frequency of the pump laser and the coherent term ρ 23, the nonzero damping coherent term ρ 23 results in the transient absorption and amplification without inversion at high pump laser energy, and the decrease of the coherence with the decrease of the pump laser energy leads to the disappearance of the amplification and enhancement of absorption.

Jianming Zhao, Yanting Zhao, Huang Tao +3 more

The effect of pumping laser intensity on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the cesium atomic three-level system was investigated, and the EIT against double-pumping laser was obtained. The theoretical explanation was put forward using density matrix, and the experimental results is in agreement with theoretical calculation.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Four-Level Atomic System

LIJia-Hua, Jiahua, Wang +1 more

In this paper, we analyze and discuss the absorption properties of the probe beam in a four-level atomic system with a nearly hyper-fine doublet structure of two higher-lying excited levels based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for the two cases of transient process and steady-state process. The main gain of this work is to investigate theoretically the influence of the nearly hyper-fine levels on the probe absorption. For the transient process, using the numerical calculations by a simple Mathematica code we find that the magnitude of the probe absorption at the line center is small compared to the typical three-level atomic system in the context of electromagnetically induced transparency. For the case of the steady state, our results show that the probe absorption can be completely eliminated at the line center of the probe transition just as the usual three-level EIT scheme.

Investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency in the strong probe regimen

Stephan Wielandy, Alexander L. Gaeta

Summary form only given. Though experiments in which a strong probe field was applied to an EIT system have been performed using pulsed lasers, previous investigations of the steady-state response of an EIT system to cw lasers have focused on the limit in which the probe field is weak. We investigate the behavior of an inhomogeneously broadened ladder system interacting with probe and control fields that are both strong. The experimental system we study is a gas of /sup 85/Rb atoms, where the lower level is the 5S/sub 1/2/ state, the intermediate level is the 5P/sub 3/2/ state, and the upper level is the 5D/sub 5/2/ state. To facilitate two-photon Doppler cancellation, the control and probe laser beams are counterpropagating. We theoretically model the response of this system by numerically solving the appropriate system of density-matrix equations without any approximations with respect to the strength of the control or probe field, and then numerically performing a Doppler average over the atomic velocity distribution.
