Abstract

Using semi-classical theory, we study a transient behavior in N-type four-level atoms with coherent system. The theoretical analysis show that the nonlinear absorption for the probe light in the coherent atoms increases from zero to the steady state through a relaxation oscillation process when signal light is switched on. Our results will provide benefits for design of absorptive switching.

Quntum interference of four-level atomic system embedded in photonic band gap structure

Fang Yuan-Feng, Chunguang Du, Shiqun Li +1 more

We study the steady and transient optical properties of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT), spontaneous emission, and the photonic switching for a four-level atomic system embedded in photonic band gap(PBG) structures. The theoretical analysis shows that a special density of modes (DOM) can induce abnormal spectrum of absorption, dispersion, spontaneous emission and transient gain without inversion, and they can be controlled by an externally applied coherent light. Furthermore, we discuss the effects of the nonsingular DOM on the EIT windows and on the photon switch in detail.

Optical switching and bistability in four-level atomic systems

Pardeep Kumar, Shubhrangshu Dasgupta

We explore the coherent control of nonlinear absorption of intense laser fields in four-level atomic systems. For instance, in a four-level ladder system, a coupling field creates electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with an Aulter-Townes doublet for the probe field while the control field is absent. A large absorption peak appears at resonance as the control field is switched on. We show how such a large absorption leads to optical switching. Further, this large absorption diminishes and a transparency window appears due to the saturation effects as the strength of the probe field is increased. We further demonstrate that the threshold of the optical bistability can be modified by suitable choices of the coupling and the control fields. In a four-level $\mathsf{Y}$-type configuration, the effect of the control field on saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) is highlighted in the context of nonlinear absorption of the probe field. We achieve RSA and SA in a simple atomic system just by applying a control field.

Transient properties of an electromagnetically induced transparency in three-level atoms

Yongqing Li, Min Xiao

We describe the transient behavior of an electromagnetically induced transparency in three-level atomic systems. When the coupling f ield is switched on, the absorption for the probe field is oscillatorily damped to its new steady-state (transparent) value. Transient gain without population inversion and enhancement of dispersion are discussed. A realistic system for experimental testing of these effects is presented.

Absorption-Free Sub- and Super-Luminal Light Propagation via Quantum Interference

Jianchun Wu, Zhengdong Liu, Jun Zheng

We investigate the dispersive and absorptive properties of an N-type four-level atomic system in three coherent fields, and consider the susceptibility mathematically. It is shown that the group velocity of the probe field exhibits sub- and super-luminal under some conditions, meanwhile the absorption coefficient keeps zero during the occurrence and transition process of sub- and super-luminal pulses.

Coherence and interference enhanced nonlinearities in a four-level system

Jen‐Hao Cheng, Min Yan, Edward G. Rickey +1 more

Summary form only given. Nonlinear optical properties of an atomic medium can be modified by coherence and quantum interference that utilizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Because of the vanishing linear absorption and large enhancement of nonlinearities in an EIT medium, nonlinear optics may be studied at low light levels. We report studies of light absorption and parametric amplification based on the EIT enhanced third-order nonlinearity in a four-level atomic system. We have observed the enhanced nonlinear absorption when two coupling lasers and one probe laser are present. We are in the process of preparing the experiments for the double EIT demonstration and observation of the efficient parametric amplification in the four-level system. Because the experimental system is essentially free of Doppler broadening, quantitative comparisons between the experimental measurements and the theoretical calculations can readily be achieved.

Study of coherence effects in a four-level Ξ−Λ type system

Kavita Yadav, Ajay Wasan

Abstract We theoretically study the two- and three-photon coherence in a Ξ−Λ type four-level system for stationary as well moving atoms at the room temperature using density matrix formalism. We discuss the role of dressed states to elucidate the electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption phenomena. The presence of the third field induces absorption at the line centre. A negative dispersion slope owing to the enhanced absorption results in super-luminal light propagation and the group index variation with the coupling field is switched from sub- to super-luminal. Group index with probe detuning shows super-luminal light propagation behaviour at the dressed state positions. The three optical fields trigger four-wave mixing as a result of the third order nonlinearity. The transient evolution is also discussed for optimum strengths of the coupling and drive fields to realize the optical switching in the system.
