Abstract

In this paper, we have studied the dynamic of reverse saturable absorption in copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) using the rate equation theory. The experimental demostration is given by using Q-switched YAG laser and CuPc solution. The absorption cross-section of 2. 6× 1 0-17cm2 of triplet excited state is obtained by using thereotical simulation.

Off-resonant reverse saturable absorption in copper phthalocyanine at steady-state

Yuxiao Wang

Reverse saturable absorption (RSA) was obtained in the solution of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) by using a 532 nm Q-switched laser. Two seady-state expressions describing reverse saturable absorption for the thin sample and the thick sample, respectively, have been obtained by using the rate equation theory. The theoretical analysis is consistent with the experimental result.

Dynamic and steady-state behaviors of reverse saturable absorption in metallophthalocyanine

Chunfei Li, Lei Zhang, Yang Miao +2 more

The dynamic and steady-state processes of the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and the related optical limiting (OL) and optical bistability (OB) in metallophthalocyanine have been studied in detail using rate equations and the light-propagation equation. The experiments for demonstrating RSA, OL, and OB in a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) solution with a Q-switched, frequency-doubled neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser were accomplished. The experimental results were consistent with the dynamic theoretical simulations, also approximately in accordance with the expression of RSA derived from the same equations at the steady-state condition.

Dynamics of reverse saturable absorption and all-optical switching in C_60

Chunfei Li, Lei Zhang, Ruibo Wang +2 more

The dynamic processes of reverse saturable absorption (RSA) in a solution of C60 are studied in detail by use of rate equations and the light-propagation equation for a five-energy-level model. The RSA experimental results for C60 in toluene solution with a nanosecond–picosecond Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm are consistent with the theoretical simulations. Effects of sample concentration and thickness on RSA and contributions of the singlet and triplet excited states to RSA for various laser-pulse widths and wavelengths are also analyzed. Finally, an all-optical switch based on excited-state nonlinear absorption and the pump-probe technique is implemented.

Excited-state nonlinear absorption in multi-energy-level molecular systems

Chunfei Li, Jinhai Si, Yang Miao +2 more

Three typical excited-state nonlinear absorption effects in molecular systems with weak ground-state absorption (at 532 nm) are experimentally demonstrated: (a) reverse saturable absorption (RSA) caused by strong triplet first-to-second excited-state absorption in a copper phthalocyanine solution with 15-ns laser pulses; (b) RSA caused by strong singlet first-to-second excited-state absorption in a ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ solution with 21-ps laser pulses; (c) the RSA-SA turnover caused by strong singlet first-to-second excited-state absorption and weak singlet second-to-third excited-state absorption in a metallo-porphyrin-like solution with 21-ps laser pulses. To simulate these excited-state nonlinear absorption behaviors we propose a general ten-level density-matrix model and its simplified models for the three cases. All simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Coherence Time Measurement of Picosecond Pulses Using Reverse Saturable Absorption in Lead Phthalocyanine

Feng Li, Duan Wubiao

The coherence time measurement of picosecond pulses using counterrunning pump probe technique in reverse saturable absorption material of lead phthalocyanine were studied. The coherence time of 23ps, 532nm Nd∶YAG laser pulses is 9ps. The experimental results and theoretical analysis show that two beam coherent effect increases the reverse saturable absorption of lead phthalocyanine.

Excited-state nonlinear absorption and its application in photonic technology

Li Chun-Fei, Jinhai Si, Yang Miao +1 more

The main achievements in our research on the physical phenomena of the excited-state nonlinear absorption in a molecular system and its applications in photonic technology are described. In the first part of this paper, some energy-level models and rate-equations are used to explain various mechanisms of the excited-state nonlinear absorption under different conditions, such as reverse saturable absorption caused by the triplet and/or the singlet excited-state absorption; saturable absorption due to the first and/or the second singlet excited-state absorption; and the excited-state nonlinear absorption induced by two-photon absorption. The experimental results for metal-organic and C 60 materials irradiated by ps and ns laser pulses are consistent with the simulated curves of the transmittance versus fluences. In the second part, the applications of excited-state nonlinear absorption in photonic techniques including optical bistability, optical switching, optical limiting, optical modulation, optical logic and optical storage are introduced. The working principles of the photonic devices based on the excited-state nonlinear absorption are presented. The experimental characteristic curves are found in good agreement with the theoretical simulations for these devices.
