Abstract

We consider the convergence problem of the conventional decoding scheme of Low-Density Parity-Check(LDPC) codes over Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) channels. In this correspondence,we propose a fast convergence decoding scheme based on quantization, which is a comprehensive method of taking advantage of the Layered Belief Propagation(LBP) algorithm, the Offset Min-Sum(OMS) algorithm and the quantization method.Compared to the conventional quantized Min-Sum algorithm, the proposed scheme efficiently reduces the decoding complexity and significantly accelerates the decoding convergence with no additional performance loss.We show that with simulations.

Fast convergence algorithm for decoding of low density parity check codes

Abstract: In this paper, a fast-convergence algorithm is proposed for the decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. By putting more weight on the message update from check node to variable node in current iteration, the proposed method speeds up the decoding significantly. Simulation results show that compared with the standard layered min-sum decoding algorithm, the proposed scheme may reduce about 1/6 iteration numbers for LDPC codes used in DVB-S2, with hardware complexity overhead less than 2%. Low-Density Parity-Check Codes for Discretized Min-Sum Decoding

B. Smith, Frank R. Kschischang, Wei Yu

The performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes transmitted over a memoryless binary-input continuous output additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and decoded with quantized min-sum decoding is strongly influenced by the decoder's quantization scheme. This paper presents an efficient algorithm that determines the best uniform scalar quantizer for a particular code. To maximize performance, it is necessary to determine degree distributions that best match the characteristics of the quantized min-sum decoder. Toward this end, an iterative optimization framework that jointly optimizes the degree distributions and the quantizer is presented

Performance of Quantized Min-Sum Decoding Algorithms for Irregular LDPC Codes

Daesun Oh, Keshab K. Parhi

This paper analyzes the performance of quantized min-sum decoding algorithms for irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. For regular LDPC codes, it is known that the normalized or offset min-sum decoding algorithm with quantization bits less than 6 bits achieves good performances over wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). However, finite precision effects in decoding irregular LDPC codes are different from that in decoding regular LDPC codes which is caused by the difference of convergence speeds between low degree nodes and high degree nodes. This paper proposes a novel method to improve the performance of the conventional normalized or offset min-sum decoding algorithm when it is approximated with finite precision for hardware implementations. The proposed method applies down-scaling factors to intrinsic information which has effects on increasing the reliability of extrinsic information at variable nodes and compensating the quantization errors caused by finite precision. Computer simulation results for irregular LDPC codes show that the proposed normalized and offset min-sum decoding algorithms achieve better performances at high SNR compared to the conventional normalized and offset min-sum algorithms under (6:2) quantization scheme.

Generalized Mutual Information-Maximizing Quantized Decoding of LDPC Codes With Layered Scheduling

Peng Kang, Kui Cai, Xuan He +2 more

In this paper, we propose a framework of the mutual information-maximizing (MIM) quantized decoding for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes by using simple mappings and fixed-point additions. Our decoding method is generic in the sense that it can be applied to LDPC codes with arbitrary degree distributions, and can be implemented based on either the belief propagation (BP) algorithm or the min-sum (MS) algorithm. In particular, we propose the MIM density evolution (MIM-DE) to construct the lookup tables (LUTs) for the node updates. The computational complexity and memory requirements are discussed and compared to the LUT decoder variants. For applications with low-latency requirement, we consider the layered schedule to accelerate the convergence speed of decoding quasi-cyclic LDPC codes. In particular, we develop the layered MIM-DE to design the LUTs based on the MS algorithm, leading to the MIM layered quantized MS (MIM-LQMS) decoder. An optimization method is further introduced to reduce the memory requirement for storing the LUTs. Simulation results show that the MIM quantized decoders outperform the state-of-the-art LUT decoders in the waterfall region with both 3-bit and 4-bit precision over the additive white Gaussian noise channels. For small decoding iterations, the MIM quantized decoders also achieve a faster convergence speed compared to the benchmarks. Moreover, the 4-bit MIM-LQMS decoder can approach the error performance of the floating-point layered BP decoder within 0.3 dB in the moderate-to-high SNR regions, over both the AWGN channels and the fast fading channels.

A Study of the Performance of LDPC Codes under Various Decoding Algorithms and Schedules

Sangwon Chae, Hyojeong Choi, Gangsan Kim +2 more

Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes have been widely used in modern communication standards due to their strong error correction capabilities. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of a (1200, 600) irregular LDPC code over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, systematically comparing three decoding algorithms (Sum-Product, Normalized Min-Sum, and Offset Min-Sum) with three scheduling methods (Flooding, Layered Belief Propagation, and Residual Belief Propagation). Parameter sweeps are performed to determine the optimal normalization factor ($\alpha$) for the Normalized Min-Sum and the offset factor ($\beta$) for the Offset Min-Sum. A comparative analysis is then performed on the frame error rate (FER) and convergence behavior of each algorithm and scheduling configuration, considering the maximum number of iterations set at 10 and 25. The results show that the Offset Min-Sum algorithm with$\beta=0.5$and Layered Belief Propagation scheduling provides an acceptable trade-off between complexity and error-correction performance, closely matching the Sum-Product algorithm but at a lower computational cost. Although Residual Belief Propagation converges quickly at lower signal-to-noise ratios, it exhibits a high error floor. These findings provide practical guidelines for selecting optimal decoding configurations in resource-constrained applications.

In this paper, several conventional decoding algorithms of LDPC(Low-Density Parity-Check) codes over Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) channels are investigated, and an improved decoding algorithm based on integer operation is proposed. Compared to normalized min-sum algorithm,a modified factor to improve the decoding performance is designed according to the states of hard decision in each iteration. It is convenient for hardware implementation with integer operation. The simulation results show that the algorithm performs better than LLR BP decoding algorithm in 2.1 dB and decodes fast with low complexity.
