Low-Density Parity-Check Codes for Discretized Min-Sum Decoding

Abstract

The performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes transmitted over a memoryless binary-input continuous output additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and decoded with quantized min-sum decoding is strongly influenced by the decoder's quantization scheme. This paper presents an efficient algorithm that determines the best uniform scalar quantizer for a particular code. To maximize performance, it is necessary to determine degree distributions that best match the characteristics of the quantized min-sum decoder. Toward this end, an iterative optimization framework that jointly optimizes the degree distributions and the quantizer is presented

Optimal Output Quantization of Binary Input AWGN Channel for Belief-Propagation Decoding of LDPC Codes

Junho Cho, Jonghong Kim, Wonyong Sung

Optimal quantizers for channel output are especially necessary for very high speed and memory-cell sensing applications where high-precision analog-to-digital converters are not available. This paper investigates a method to find optimal output quantizers for a binary input (BI) additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel when regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are used with belief-propagation (BP) decoding. The optimal quantizers are found by uni-parametric and multi-parametric optimization methods based on the discretized density evolution (DE). The capacity of various LDPC code ensembles are also provided with the BI-AWGN channel outputs quantized using these optimal quantizers. It is demonstrated that only 3 bits of quantization precision performs almost within 0.1 dB of the infinite precision channel output. The effect of the code rate and the degree distribution of LDPC codes on the optimal quantization boundaries is analyzed.

Analysis of sum-product decoding of low-density parity-check codes using a Gaussian approximation

Sae-Young Chung, Tom Richardson, Rudiger L. Urbanke

Density evolution is an algorithm for computing the capacity of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under message-passing decoding. For memoryless binary-input continuous-output additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and sum-product decoders, we use a Gaussian approximation for message densities under density evolution to simplify the analysis of the decoding algorithm. We convert the infinite-dimensional problem of iteratively calculating message densities, which is needed to find the exact threshold, to a one-dimensional problem of updating the means of the Gaussian densities. This simplification not only allows us to calculate the threshold quickly and to understand the behavior of the decoder better, but also makes it easier to design good irregular LDPC codes for AWGN channels. For various regular LDPC codes we have examined, thresholds can be estimated within 0.1 dB of the exact value. For rates between 0.5 and 0.9, codes designed using the Gaussian approximation perform within 0.02 dB of the best performing codes found so far by using density evolution when the maximum variable degree is 10. We show that by using the Gaussian approximation, we can visualize the sum-product decoding algorithm. We also show that the optimization of degree distributions can be understood and done graphically using the visualization.

Gaussian approximation for sum-product decoding of low-density parity-check codes

Sae-Young Chung, Rudiger L. Urbanke, Tom Richardson

We use a Gaussian approximation (GA) for analyzing the sum-product algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and memoryless binary-input continuous-output additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. This simplification allows us to calculate the threshold quickly and to understand the behavior of the decoder better. We have also designed high rate LDPC codes using the Gaussian approximation that have thresholds less than 0.05 dB from the Shannon limit.

Algorithm Design of Quantized Min-Sum Decoder for Low-density Parity-Check (LDPC) Codes Based on Density Evolution

Xinmei Wang

Design of quantized Min-Sum decoder for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is very important for the application of LDPC codes.Based on the theory of density evolution, the paper proposes an algorithm to optimize the uniform or ununiform quantized Min-Sum decoder for regular or irregular LDPC codes.Compared with the continuous Sum-Product decoder, the proposed quantized decoder can reduce computational cost with little performance degradation, involving only integer addition calculations.

Fast Convergence Decoding Scheme for LDPC Codes

Lin Zhi-guo

We consider the convergence problem of the conventional decoding scheme of Low-Density Parity-Check(LDPC) codes over Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) channels. In this correspondence,we propose a fast convergence decoding scheme based on quantization, which is a comprehensive method of taking advantage of the Layered Belief Propagation(LBP) algorithm, the Offset Min-Sum(OMS) algorithm and the quantization method.Compared to the conventional quantized Min-Sum algorithm, the proposed scheme efficiently reduces the decoding complexity and significantly accelerates the decoding convergence with no additional performance loss.We show that with simulations.

Adaptive normalized min-sum algorithm for LDPC decoding

Liwen Fan, Changyong Pan, Kewu Peng +1 more

This paper proposes an adaptive normalized min-sum algorithm for the decoding of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes, which utilizes an adaptive normalization factor to improve the accuracy of the soft information transferred during the iterative decoding process, and provides superior performance accordingly. This adaptive normalization factor can be adjusted dynamically and adaptively at each decoding iteration according to a look-up table obtained via training and simulation. Its implementation facility and independence from the channel characteristics make the proposed adaptive normalized min-sum algorithm expect a wide application. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve performance much closer to the sum-product algorithm and a coding gain of around 0.2dB compared to the conventional normalized min-sum algorithm for DVB-S2's rate 2/5 and 3/5 LDPC codes over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel.
