Abstract

An experiment is reported in a sodium vapor cell with cw laser pumping. Two dips in the excitation spectra of the sodium D 1 line are observed. Theoretical excitation spectra in the three_level system is calculated and analyzed in detail and the results are identical with experiments. It is demonstrated that the appearance of the two dips in the excitation spectra is closely related to quantum interference effect.

A theoretical consideration of the effects upon a resonance fluorescence spectrum caused by interference between coupled hyperfine excited states

In the context of laser spectroscopy we consider the effects of interference between the spontaneous emission to a common lower level from neighbouring, closely spaced, excited-state levels. In particular the effects on the fluorescence spectrum and on the measured positions of the line centres are described. A formalism, based upon the atomic density matrix, is developed quantitatively to describe these effects within complex hyperfine systems such as the sodium D-lines. Where possible, we have tried to simplify the resultant equations, defining the magnitude of the various fluorescent components and establish a general result for the phase of each component. Finally, the formalism is applied to the particular case of the sodium D1-line, where very different results are obtained depending on whether optical pumping into unobserved states is included, or omitted, from the calculation.

Laser excitation and ionization processes in dense (1--10 Torr) sodium vapor have been studied for laser wavelengths near the two-photon allowed nd /sup 2/D(n = 3, 4, 5) and ns /sup 2/S(n = 4, 5, 6) states. In particular, the 1 /sup 3//Sigma//sup +//sub g//yields/1 /sup 3//Sigma//sup +//sub u/ excimer emission in Na/sub 2/, predicted in 1980 by Konowalow and Julienne and observed recently by Dinev et al, was studied here in greater detail. Strong excimer emission (/similar to/30 nm) was observed for two-photon pumping to both sides of the unresolved 4D states, and weak excimer emission was seen when pumping near the 5D levels. The excimer emission exhibits a complicated pump laser profile with a pronounced ''dip'' at the 4d /sup 2/D two-photon resonance. Similarly, (2+1) photon ionization via the 3d /sup 2/D and 4d /sup 2/D states shows a dramatic decrease as the sodium density increases. These results can be attributed either to depleted 3d /sup 2/D or 4d /sup 2/D population due to stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) or to the interference effects recently reported by Malcuit et al. and Krasnikov et al. and treated theoretically by Manykin and Afanas'ev and by Agarwal. Absorption spectrum of a V-type three-level atom driven by a coherent field

We examine the absorption of a weak probe beam by a laser driven V-type atom with a pair of closely lying excited levels, where both the driving and probe lasers interact simultaneously with the two transitions. The effects of quantum interference among decay channels on the absorption spectra are also investigated. We introduce dipole moments in the dressed-state representation and the Hamiltonian in terms of the dressed states describing the interaction between the probe and the atom. In the degenerate case, features similar to that of a driven two-level atomic system are found due to some dark transitions in the spontaneous emission and the fact that the probe beam only detects certain transitions. In the nondegenerate case, the absorption spectrum is strongly influenced by the degree of quantum interference, resulting in different line shapes for emission peaks, absorption peaks, and dispersionlike profiles. The effect of probe polarization on the absorption spectrum is also investigated.

Interference between electromagnetically induced transparency and two-step excitation in three-level ladder systems

We have performed electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and two-photon absorption experiments in ladder-type three-level systems in a hot sodium atomic vapor, using the 3S1/2-3P1/2-4D3/2, 3S1/2-3P3/2-4D3/2,5/2, 3S1/2-3P1/2-5S1/2, and 3S1/2-3P3/2-5S1/2 transitions. In particular, in the most pronounced 3S1/2-3P1/2-4D3/2 system, we have observed quite unique spectral line shapes that are superpositions of sharp dips and peaks, in contrast to ordinary EIT spectra. The peaks and dips have apparently different physical origins, and the line shape can be interpreted as the interference between EIT and two-step excitation.

It is argued that both mechanisms are operative. Strong ionization and SERS signals were observed at the hybrid resonances corresponding to 3p 2P3/2, 1/2 →4d 2D transitions; however, no excimer lasing at 830 nm was detected. No excimer emission was detected upon two-photon pumping near or at the 3d 2D or ns 2S(n=4, 5, 6) states. Based on these and other observations, the 1 3Σ+g→1 3Σ+u excimer emission is attributed to a molecular Raman process involving stimulated emission or six-wave mixing via a pathway of the type 1 3Σ+u→2hν 3Δu→ j 3Πg→(k 3Πu, l 3Σ +u)→1 3Σ+g→1 3Σ +u .
