Abstract

Optical pumping makes atom system be partial polarization but magnetic resonance produces depolarization, which is the basic process for investigation of the responsibility to optical pumping for Rb isotope. With improvement on experimental technology, the magnetic resonance signal, also with optical pumping signal, from 85Rb and 87Rb can be completely separated. The relation between detecting signal and physics parameters for optical pumping is drawn out by assuming a model of three energy levels. Results from data analysis indicate the responsibility to optical pumping for 87Rb and 85Rb will be accurately described with unitary relaxation mechanism, respectively. The relaxation time has partly reflected the difference of transition probabilities between energy levels of 87Rb and 85Rb.

Responsibility to Optical Pumping for Binary Mixtures of Rb Isotope

Chaorui Li, Qiang Tang, Xiaowei Liu

Investigation of optical pumping for binary mixtures may provide information on the interaction between atomic systems and open up possibility to control response time.Considered Rb isotope 85 Rb and 87 Rb as binary mixtures, optical pumping response can be observed with using square modulated field at 10Hz and two channels of RF sources for NMR of 85 Rb and 87 Rb respectively.Based on proposed model of three energy levels, unitary system or binary mixtures of 85 Rb and 87 Rb can be accurately described with an exponential function.According to the relation of response time between binary and unitary, the response time for mixtures is contributed from unitary ones and their concentrations.

Analysis of optical pumping signal

Xiaoping Zhang

Optical pumping signal subjected to a scanning magnetic field was experimentally observed.According to the theory of atom radiation transition,a simplified energy model of optical pumping was established and the equation of transition rate was set based on the optical pumping magnetic resonance experiment. The dependences of the signal intensity and relaxation time on the magnetic field were numerically calculated, and the results were in good agreement with the experiment.

New method for polarizing complicated atoms

Fucheng Lin, Shouyun Tain, Zhang Guiyan +1 more

In the optical pumping process, spontaneous emission plays a unique role in redistributing the population of the ground level among the magnetic sub-levels. It is clear that the branching ratio of the relevant transition in the optical pumping must be nearly equal to unity in order to avoid the loss of population involved. Unfortunately, most complicated atoms do not have a simple energy level structure and cannot be polarized using optical pumping. We propose here a new polarizing method of a purely laser-driven process that avoids spontaneous emission and can be used in many heavier atoms. For J = 0 ground-state atoms, a complete population transfer to the meta-stable state can be used as efficient laser isotope separation, whereas a coherently prepared superposition state of the non-magnetic ground state and one of the magnetic states of the meta-stable level can be used as a tool to study the decoherent process. For J of the ground level no less than unity, partly removing the population on one of its sub-magnetic states will enhance the magnetic resonance signal significantly.

OPTICAL PUMPING OF 87Rb ATOMS USING 85Rb LAMP

Yang Yong Feng, LIU SHU-QIN, DONG TAI-QIAN +1 more

An optical pumping device, consisting of only 85Rb lamp and 87Rb absorption bulb, is used. The 0-0 transition resonance signal of 87Rb ground state is found to be greater than that in the conventional optical pumping device, in which the 87Rb lamp, 85Rb filter and 87Rb absorption bulb are used. In a definite temperature range, a negative resonance signal is observed. Up to now, it has not been explained yet. The line-width and optical frequency shift are measured. The possibility of applying this device in 87Rb atomic frequency standard is discussed.

Spin-polarization dependence of the Rb-Xe spin-exchange optical pumping process

Bowen Song, Yanhua Wang, Nan Zhao

We experimentally study the Rb-Xe spin-exchange optical pumping process. The dependence of the spin-exchange rate on the intensity of the pumping light is measured at different temperatures under low magnetic fields. We demonstrate that the spin-exchange rate will decrease as the Rb spin polarization increases, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction. In our measurement, three spin exchange and spin relaxation mechanisms, namely, the spin exchange rates between Rb and Xe atoms caused by van der Waals molecule (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\mathrm{vdW}}$) and binary collision (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\mathrm{bin}}$) processes, and the spin relaxation rate due to the wall collision of Xe atoms (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\mathrm{w}}$), have comparable magnitudes. These rates are extracted separately from the measured data with different Rb spin polarization at various temperatures. Our work provides a comprehensive confirmation of the physical picture of the spin-exchange optical pumping process.

Optical pumping magnetic resonance in high magnetic fields: Characterization of nuclear relaxation during pumping

Matthew P. Augustine, Kurt W. Zilm

The polarization of 129Xe gas by spin exchange with optically pumped Rb vapor is investigated in high magnetic field. Operation in a high field provides added spectral dispersion via Zeeman shifts of the electronic transitions. This simplifies the physics of the pumping process in such a way as to make it more amenable to treatment with simple rate theory. A relationship between the steady state 129Xe polarization and the applied laser power is derived which agrees with experimental results. This theory serves as a guide to the manufacture of very high polarizations of 129Xe gas.
