Abstract

The properties of the photoelectron spectra in two resonant multi-photon ionization process are studied by means of dressed state theory and perturbation theory. The influences on the photoelectron spectra by the area of the first pulse and the delay between two pulses are discussed under strong-field scheme. It is shown that the photoelectron spectra can be modulated by the areas of the two pulses and the delay between them.Control of Autler-Townes doublet and the interferences in doublet can be realized by the area of the first pulse and the delay between the two pulses. The selective population of dressed states(SPODS)also can be realized by this coherent quantum mechanism. The population of dressed states cannot be selected by the area of the second pulse, but obviously it can be modulated.

Influence of Detuning on the Ionization Photoelectron Spectra in Excitation-ionization Scheme

Liu Birui

The influence of the detuning on the properties of a two-photon ionization photoelectron spectrum in an excitation-ionization scheme under a frequency-modulated field is studied theoretically by means of the perturbation theory and numerical calculation method. It is shown that the photoelectron spectra can be modulated by the frequency detuning. This modulation is based on the selective population of dressed states(SPODS) of the excited state, and the positive detuning is propitious to the selective population on the lower dressed state, while the negative detuning leads to the selective population in the upper dressed state.

Coherent Control of Autler-Townes Doublet of the Photoelectron Spectra of K Atom at 4p State

Yu Ding

Population of the 4p state of K atom was studied theoretically by means of dressed states theory when a sequence of two laser pulses is used to excite K atom from the 4s to the 4p state.Relationships of the population of the dressed states and area of the first pulse and delay time between two pulses were obtained. Then the relationship between Autler-Townes doublet and the delay time was investigated by using the formula attained. It is shown that Autler-Townes doublet of the 4p state can be controlled by the delay time between the two pulses selecting the population of the dressed state, because of the delay time and the area of the first pulse which has a fixed value equal to 0.5π.

Coherent control of electrons, atoms and molecules with intense shaped light pulses

M. Wollenhaupt, Tim Bayer, Marc Krug +2 more

We report on a physical mechanism of coherent control with intense shaped femtosecond laser pulses. We study photoelectron spectra from multi-photon ionization of potassium atoms and dimers using tailored femtosecond laser pulses. Our results are interpreted in terms of Selective Population of Dressed States (SPODS). Two realizations of SPODS by Photon Locking (PL) via pulse sequences and Rapid Adiabatic Passage (RAP) via chirped pulses are discussed. New physical mechanisms arise, when both PL and RAP are at play simultaneously. Control by the combined effect of PL and RAP is studied by mapping out a two-parameter Quantum Control Landscape (QCL) for selective population of dressed states.

Control of Autler-Townes spectra by counter-rotating circularly polarized pulses

Yutong Deng, Yijie Liao, Xu Zhang +3 more

We theoretically investigate the resonant two-photon ionization of a hydrogen atom in the counter-rotating circularly polarized double-pulse sequences, by solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. Due to the induced Rabi oscillations between the ground and excited states, the well-known Autler-Townes doublet is observed in the photoelectron spectra. More interestingly, our numerical results reveal an additional peak located between the Autler-Townes doublets, which originates from single-photon ionization from the excited state by the second pulse. By adjusting the laser intensity of the two pulses, the photoelectron yields of the three peaks can be sensitively modulated, under the control of completed Rabi cycles within the first pulse. In addition, our results show a potential of manipulating the photoemission anisotropy by both the laser intensity and the two-pulse time delay, through adjusting the competition of different partial waves generated by the two pulses.

Control of interferences in an Autler-Townes doublet: Symmetry of control parameters

M. Wollenhaupt, Andreas Assion, O. Bazhan +5 more

Coherent control beyond population control and spectral interferences is demonstrated on the interferences and intensity of the two Autler-Townes (AT) components in the photoelectron spectrum of K atoms, using a sequence of two intense time-delayed femtosecond laser pulses. Photoelectron spectra were taken at various delay times between the two laser pulses and at different laser intensities at a fixed delay time. With respect to the interferences in the AT doublet the role of time delay and laser intensity is interchangeable for $(n+0.5)\ensuremath{\pi}$ excitation. Strong laser fields or the optical phase of the delayed laser pulse allow the quantum mechanical phase of an atomic state to be manipulated in a symmetrical fashion. The observations are discussed in terms of a two-level model coupled to the continuum. For suitable combinations of the laser intensity of the first pulse and the time delay, the second laser pulse leaves the excited state population unchanged.
