Abstract

An improved decoding algorithm, which aims to reduce the decoding complexity of irregular low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes,is presented for implementation with digital signal processors(DSPs) with reduced computation complexity and low error floor. The algorithm uses the modified min-sum(MMS) algorithm for check node processing with the extrinsic information updated sequentially, so that it exhibits a low decoding threshold with a limited number of iterations, while reducing the node processing complexity and error floor.Tests with a fixed-point DSP show that the algorithm achieves a low error floor and low decoding threshold with low implementation complexity.

Modified Normalized Min-Sum decoding of LDPC codes

Rong Chen, Yiming Wang

In this paper, we present an improvement on the normalized min-sum (NMS) decoding algorithm for low density parity check codes. The modified NMS (M-NMS) algorithm introduces a more efficient adjustment for check node update computation. Taking the sub-minimum value among extrinsic information from the variable nodes into consideration, we make the correction factor varies with different iterations. Results show that, compared with standard min-sum (MS) and NMS decoding algorithms, the proposed method not only offers a better performance but also achieves a lower error floor in the high SNR region.

Low Density Parity Check(LDPC) codes,a new channel coding method, have been successfully applied to the Second Generation of Satellite Digital Video Broadcasting system. In message passing algorithms for LDPC decoding,Min-Sum algorithm has lower complexity compared to the basic Log BP algorithm. However,it causes 0.5 dB performance degradation. In this paper a normalized factor is optimized using Gaussian approximation density evolution algorithm.Numerical results show that the improved algorithm can reduce the gap between Min-Sum and Log-BP,without increasing complexity. Finally this improved algorithm is implemented on a digital signal processor.

A Modified Normalized Min - Sum Decoding Algorithm for Irregular LDPC Codes

Michaelraj Kingston Roberts, Ramesh Jayabalan

In this paper, a modified normalized Min-Sum algorithm (MNMSA) is proposed for decoding irregular Low Density Parity Check Codes (LDPC) with non-uniform degree distribution. The proposed algorithm provides an efficient decoding scheme to enhance the error performance of an irregular LDPC code without increasing the hardware complexity. An efficient 6- bit quantization scheme is utilized in the proposed algorithm with optimally combined normalization and down scaling factors to resolve the magnitude overestimation issue which occurs during iterative message passing process between the nodes. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves good decoding performance in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER) and Bit Error Rate (BER) without the requirement of complex arithmetic calculations. Compared to other min- sum based decoding algorithms the decoding process of the proposed MNMSA requires only fewer decoding iterations over wide range of signal- to- noise ratio (SNR) to achieve comparable decoding performance to that of Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm without increasing the hardware complexity.

A low-complex Min-Sum decoding algorithm for irregular LDPC codes

Michaelraj Kingston Roberts, Maria Falaq

This paper presents a low complexity Min-Sum algorithm for decoding irregular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. In the proposed algorithm, the significant improvement in the error correcting performance without enhancing the hardware complexity is achieved by employing adaptive and optimized normalization factors for both the extrinsic information and log-likelihood ratio data bits respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm with 6-bit non-uniform quantization achieves reasonable decoding performance in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER) and Bit Error Rate (BER) without increasing the hardware complexity by avoiding finite word length effects of soft information.

Error floor properties of low-density parity-check codes using iterative decoding algorithms

Jianhua Lü

Error floor properties of low-density parity-check(LDPC)codes using different decoding algorithms were statistically analyzed utilizing test data from a hardware evaluation platform. The analysis shows that the number of residual error bits in an error codeword after decoding failure using the sum-product(SP)algorithm or the modified min-sum(MMS)algorithm is usually quite small;therefore,LDPC codes can serve as the inner code in a concatenated coding system to achieve an ultra low bit error rate. The analysis also shows that SP algorithm is more suitable for a concatenated coding system than MMS algorithm since less residual error bits occur when using the SP algorithm.Concatenated codes based on the analysis achieve bit error rates lower than 10-10 with a low decoding threshold.

Gang Wang, Nguyen Thi Dieu Linh, Georgia Rugumira

Low-Density-Parity-Check Code (LDPC) codes have received great attention recently because of the excellent error-correcting capability and optional error correct code. A new method base on Min-Sum-Plus-Correction-Factor Algorithm using stopping node to reduce computing complexity on Low-Density-Parity-Check Code decoding algorithm is presented in this paper. The improved method shows how to make early decisions to reduce computation complexity of LDPC decoding algorithm in the next iteration under QPSK systems. Simulation results show that computational complexity of LDPC decoding using Stopping node criterion can reduce up to 6 times with maintaining quality level.
