Abstract

Optical bistability has been observed with nonlinear long-range surface plasmons excitation using prism-index matching liquidsilver film-semioonduotor-doped glasses configuration by ATE. A typical hysteresis loop has been recorded for the relation between reflectance and incident beam power.

Optical bistability using prism-coupled, long-range surface plasmons

Robert K. Hickernell, Dror Sarid

We consider an attenuated total reflection prism-coupling geometry used to excite surface-plasmon waves along a metal film, bounded by a substrate with an intensity-dependent dielectric constant. Nonlinear wave theory is developed in the infinite incident plane-wave approximation, assuming a dielectric constant proportional to the square of the electric field normal to the film. We calculate the intensity required to observe bistability in the reflected intensity by excitation of the nonlinear, long-range surface plasmon and find it to be 2 orders of magnitude less than that required for the nonlinear, single-surface plasmon. We compare the nonlinear wave analysis with other approaches and illustrate the effects of the sign of the nonlinearity and of a nonlinear coupling layer.

Observation of Optical Bistability Hysteresis Loop with Surface Waves in Doped Polymer Film

Peixian Ye, Zuhe Yu, Zhanxiang Zhang +2 more

Optical bistability hysteresis loop has been observed experimentally with a setup using prism excitation of surface wave in a doped polymer thin film. A simple model has been developed to analyze its operation. The observed bistability hysteresis loop can be explained in terms of surface plasmon excitation and laser induced refractive index variations.

Optical Bistability Associated with Surface Plasmon Polariton Excitation

Toshihiro Okamoto, Masanobu Haraguchi, Masuo Fukui

We have theoretically analysed the optical bistability due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SP's) in samples, prism/metal film/nonlinear optic medium and prism/gap material/metal film/non-linear optic medium, where the non-linear optic medium has an intensity-dependent refractive index. We considered two cases, i.e. non-linearity along the propagation direction of SP's and along the normal to the interface. In the former case, the critical input power for the optical bistability was too high to allow experimental observation, while it was reasonably low for the latter case.

Optical bistability from surface plasmon excitation through a nonlinear medium

P. Martinot, S. Laval, A. Köster

The excitation of surface plasmon by attenuated total reflection can be used to get a bistable optical device. As the incident light beam propagates through a nonlinear medium, any intensity variation tunes the plasmon excitation through resonance. Furthermore, the superposition of the incident and reflected beams induces a feedback and allows bistable operation.

We theoretically examine bistable operation in reflection with simultaneous excitation of the surface-plasmon mode at the interface with a nonlinear Kerr medium. Bistability may occur for an incident power an order of magnitude below that reported previously for a grazing-incidence geometry.
