Abstract

The absorption and dispersion properties of the probe field were investigated along with the parameters of the coupling field and the microwave field by numerically solving the density matrix equation of the quasi-Λ-four-level system. It is shown that as the microwave field Rabi frequency increasing, the probe field absorption of the resonance frequency position decreased gradually, and the dispersion property was also influenced which the switching from anomalous dispersion to normal dispersion can be observed. Both microwave field and coupling field were strong fields, the effect of two fields on the probe absorption and dispersion can be obtained by changing the parameters of two fields.

The switch between electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption due to the power broadening of probing field

Xiaoli Li, Chao He, Jianfei Zhang

In this paper we present a theoretical study of the nonlinear effect in the quasi-lambda type four-level system. The system consists of an excited state level and three ground state hyperfine levels. Probing and coupling field are coupled to between the excited state and two higher ground states, and the microwave field drives the two lower ground states which are associated with probing field. By solving the precision solutions of the equations of motion of density matrix, the absorption properties as a function of Rabi frequencies of the probing field and microwave field are given. As a result, the switch from double EIT to single EIA is found due to the power broadening of probing field. However, the splitting frequency of double EIT has some connection with the Rabi frequency of microwave field.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in the four-level system driven by bichromatic microwave field

Lijun Yang, Ke-jia Sun, Su-Heng Zhang +1 more

We present a theoretical study on the nonlinear behaviors of the electromagnetically induced transparency resonance subject to two microwave driving fields in a four-level atom system. The probe absorption spectrum is obtained by solving numerically the relevant equations of density matrix. It is shown that there are two pairs of the EIT windows in the probe absorption spectrum. The two pairs of EIT windows have symmetry with respect to the resonance frequency of the probe field, and the separation is equal to the Rabi frequency of the resonant microwave driving field. But in each pair, the splitting of two EIT windows is dominated to the strength of detuning microwave driving field.

The Absorption and Dispersion Properties in a Four-level Inverted-Y Atomic System

Jun Zeng

A four-level atomic system in an inverted-Y configuration interacted with three optical fields has been investigated and the properties of absorption and dispersion in different control optical fields have been discussed. The electromagnetic induced transparency would be obtained by choosing proper parameters while the optical nonlinearity of the system would be changed with external fields. The numerical results also show the probe gain via changing phases of Rabi frequency.

Impact of Controlling Fields on the Absorption-dispersion Properties in an M-type Atomic System

Zheng Juna

The impact on the absorption-dispersion properties in an Mtype five-level atomic system interacting with external fields system are discussed by using numerical analysis. It is shown that changing the control fields can influence the absorption-dispersion properties regularly. The electromagnetically induce transparency windows can be obtained if the parameters are taken appropriately. The number of transparency windows is proportion to the number of control fields and the width of the transparency windows is related to Rabi frequencies. It is found that the electromagnetically induce transparency windows in the system narrow gradually as decreasing control fields Rabi frequencies while the dispersion of medium would be enhanced and slow-light would be realized.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in a closed lambda-shaped four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Baozhu Yang +1 more

A quasi-lambda four-level system shows both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In addition to an optical coupling field and a probing field, there is a radio field which interacts with two excited state hyperfine levels of the quasi-lambda four-level system consisting of two excited state hyperfine levels and two ground state hyperfine levels. If a driving field which interacts with two ground state hyperfine levels is introduced, the quasi-lambda four-level system is modified to a closed-lambda four-level system. The behaviors of the driving field and radio field are studied in this paper and it is seen that the occurence of EIA or EIT and the whole probing properties are controlled by the Rabi frequencies of both driving field and radio field.

Normal and Anomalous Dispersion in Three-level Cascade Media

Xiangming Hu

We suggest that a three-level cascade medium be used to achieve the switching from normal dispersion to anomalous dispersion. In the cascade medium, two dipole-allowed transitions are coupled by two different coherent fields, respectively. A probe field is applied either to the upper transition or to the lower transition. The equations for density matrix elements are transformed into a set of equations with time-independent coefficients in the steady state via harmonic expansion, which are solved by matrix inversion. By the solutions we obtain the absorption and dispersion spectra. It is shown that for each case, the medium exhibits either normal or anomalous dispersion at the same frequency regime. The switching from normal dispersion to anomalous dispersion is obtained by varying the intensity from couple to probe transition. The two differences lie between the proposed cascade system and the Λ and V systems. Firstly, near degenerate levels are required for the Λ and V systems when the probe field is simultaneously coupled to the two transitions to achieve dispersion switching. The present scheme is based on an equivalent realization of near degeneracy in the dressed picture, and the interval is controlled by the corresponding field. Secondly, dispersion switching does not occur in the Λ and V systems when the probe field is only coupled to either of two transitions and the decoupled state plays a dominant role. In contrast, the present scheme does not involve the decoupled state.
