Abstract

We describe a novel experimental method by introducing sequential ionization with a pulsed and a strong constant electric field in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This method is applied to study laser-excited double Rydberg states of neutral ytterbium atom, with the ionic resonance background in the spectrum of the double Rydberg states of Yb being greatly suppressed.

Observation of strong electronic correlation for highly excited double Rydberg states of ytterbium

Wenbo Huang, Xiang-Yuan Xu, C. B. Xu +3 more

Using five-laser resonance excitation in combination with a method of sequential ionization by a pulsed and a constant electric field, we have observed the nearly pure spectra (the ion resonance background was greatly suppressed) for the highly excited double Rydberg states NLn'l (N\ensuremath{\gtrsim}40, N/n'\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5 and L,l4) of ytterbium in which the mutual penetration of the two excited wave functions is remarkable. Analysis of the spectra (relative cross section for different L states) has revealed the importance of the ``hybridization'' in the excited electron orbits which arises from the correlation of the two electrons in such highly excited states.

Study of highly excited states of Yb

Xiang-Yuan Xu, Wuyin Huang, C. B. Xu +2 more

We report here the first study of the Yb double‐Rydberg states based on a new time‐of‐flight mass spectroscopy system with five‐lasers resonance excitation. The first quantitative measurement of relative excitation strength for various core states was worked out. The atomic Rydberg states, the autoionizing Rydberg states and ionic Rydberg states were also investigated.

Double-Rydberg spectroscopy of the barium atom

Jacques Boulmer, Pierre Camus, P. Pillet

Methods of excitation and analysis of double-Rydberg states of the neutral barium atom are discussed. Spectra of 9dn′d double-Rydberg series of barium are studied and interpreted in a two-channel quantum-defect model. An example of stabilization for the 9d5/227d state is shown. We propose a new investigative method for Rydberg levels of the Ba+ ion that is based on a microwave-ionization process coupled with a double time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This novel setup permits us to obtain initial experimental evidence of highly excited double-Rydberg states, 26dn′p and 27sn′p (n′ ≳ 45), of the barium atom.

Single-atom detection of ytterbium by selective laser excitation and field ionization from Rydberg states

G. I. Bekov, Vladilen S Letokhov, Oleg I. Matveev +1 more

Detection of single atoms Yb has been achieved using the method of electric-field ionization from the high-lying Rydberg states. Atoms of Yb in a beam were excited in three steps to a 17-p state by radiation of three pulsed dye lasers. The statistics of an atom's appearance in the interaction volume have been studied in the single-ion-counting regime at low beam density.

Highly-Excited Double Rydberg States of Ytterbium

Xiang-Yuan Xu, Wen Tao Huang, Chengbin Xu +2 more

By using five-laser resonance excitation in combination with a new detection method, the highly-excited double Rydberg states NLn'l ( N ⩾ 40, N / n' ⩾ 0.5 and L , l < 4) of Yb have been observed. The relative excitation strengths between the Δ l allowed and forbidden core transitions can be quantitatively measured. Analysis of the spectra has revealed the strong electronic correlation in such highly excited states.

Selective photoionization of the ytterbium atom by coherent two-photon excitation

Hyunmin Park, Jongmin Lee, Jai-Hyung Lee +1 more

Highly selective photoionization of the ytterbium atom by coherent two-photon excitation was demonstrated experimentally. The Yb atom was excited by two single-mode lasers and ionized by a time-delayed broadband laser. The isotope ratio of the ions was analyzed by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The ion yield and the selectivity were recorded as a function of detuning of the first exciting laser. The maximum of ion yield was observed when the laser was detuned from resonance. The selectivity of $^{168}\mathrm{Yb}$ was increased higher than 20 000 when the laser was blue-detuned to the most efficient position. Also, numerical analysis was performed to explain the experimental results. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
