LASER ABSOLUTE FREQUENCY AND ENERGY-LEVEL DIFFERENCE MEASUREMENT BY POLARIZATION BEATS

Abstract

The polarization beats in a cascade three-level system have been studied. We have found that the accuracy for the energy-level difference measurement is determined by thd homogeneous linewidths of the optical transition. In the condition for the occurrence of beating, the frequency difference of the beat between two independent light sources could exceed the laser linewidth. The measurement accuracy for laser absolute frequency could reach the same order of magnitude as the laser linewidth.

We have studied theoretically a beat effect in a four-level system due to fifth-order optical polarization, and considered the cases that the pump beams have either narrowband or broadband linewidth. We have found that the accuracy for the energy-level splitting meaurement is determined by the homogeneous linewidths of the optical transitions. We have studied the asymmetric behavior of the polarization beats in a four-level system when the pump beams have either narrowband or broadband linewidth, we attribute this asymmetry to the shift of the zero time delay which is due to the dispersion of the optical components.

Effects of field correlation on polarization beats

Yanpeng Zhang, Liqun Sun, Tiantong Tang +1 more

We have employed a second-order coherence function theory to study the effect of laser coherence on polarization beats in four-level system (PBFS). It is found that the temporal behavior of the beat signal depends on the stochastic properties of the lasers and transverse relaxation rate of the transition. The cases that pump beams have either narrow band or broadband linewidth are considered and it has been found that for both cases a Doppler-free precision in the measurement of the energy-level splitting between two excited states which are dipolar forbidden from the ground state can be achieved. We have also studied the asymmetric behavior of the polarization beats, and attributed this asymmetry to the shift of the zero time delay which is due to the dispersion of the optical components.

Nonlinear effects of third-and fifth-order on polarization beats in a four-level system

Zhang Yan-peng, Keqing Lu, WU Hong-cai +2 more

We have employed second-order coherence function theory to study the nonlinear effects of third-and fifth-order on polarization beats in a four-level system (TPBFS and FPBFS). It is found that the different temporal behavior of the beat signal in TPBFS and FPBFS depends on the stochastic properties of the lasers and transverse relaxation rate of the transition. We have considered the cases that pump beams have either narrow band or broadband linewidth and found that for both cases a Doppler-free precision can be achieved in the measurement of the energy-level difference between two excited states which are dipolar forbidden from the ground state. We also discussed the spatiall modulation behavior of the beat signal.
