Abstract

This paper presents dark oscillations of light-indhced absorption in heavy reduced Co: KNSBN crystal, points out there are double carriers and multiple traps in the crystal and explains the experimental results with the newly established model of double carriers and multiple traps.

Slow-light enhanced self-phase modulation, three-photon absorption and free-carriers in photonic crystals: experiment and theory

Chad A. Husko, Sylvain Combrié, Quynh Vy Tran +3 more

We demonstrate experimental results and analytical formulation of slow-light-enhanced self-phase modulation limited only by three-photon absorption. We present nonlinear figure-of-merits on three-photon-limited ultrafast switching, and critical intensities for free-carrier effects in photonic crystals.

Observation of "double-dark" resonances

George R. Welch, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Michael M. Kash +1 more

Summary form only given. The phenomenon of "dark resonances" or coherent population trapping is a well known concept in optics and laser spectroscopy. It can be considered as the basis for such effects as electromagnetically induced transparency and lasing without inversion. We report the observation of the novel spectral features which arise in systems where multiple quantum superposition states are coupled and interact coherently. These novel resonances correspond to the recently predicted "double-dark states". In the experiment, an optically thin ensemble of rubidium-37 atoms in zero magnetic field is excited in a /spl Lambda/ configuration with circularly polarized light from a pair of 789 nm diode lasers.

Experimental Observation of Oscillating and Interacting Matter Wave Dark Solitons

A. Weller, J. P. Ronzheimer, C. Gross +5 more

We report on the generation, subsequent oscillation and interaction of a pair of matter-wave dark solitons. These are created by releasing a Bose-Einstein condensate from a double well potential into a harmonic trap in the crossover regime between one dimension and three dimensions. Multiple oscillations and collisions of the solitons are observed, in quantitative agreement with simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. An effective particle picture is developed and confirms that the deviation of the observed oscillation frequencies from the asymptotic prediction nu(z)/sqrt 2, where nu(z) is the longitudinal trapping frequency, results from the dimensionality of the system and the soliton interactions.

Multiple dark-bright solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

D. Yan, JiaJia Chang, Chris Hamner +6 more

Motivated by recent experimental results, we present a systematic theoretical analysis of dark-bright-soliton interactions and multiple-dark-bright-soliton complexes in atomic two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We study analytically the interactions between two dark-bright solitons in a homogeneous condensate and then extend our considerations to the presence of the trap. We illustrate the existence of robust stationary dark-bright-soliton ``molecules,'' composed of two or more solitons, which are formed due to the competition of the interaction forces between the dark- and bright-soliton components and the trap force. Our analysis is based on an effective equation of motion, derived for the distance between two dark-bright solitons. This equation provides equilibrium positions and characteristic oscillation frequencies of the solitons, which are found to be in good agreement with the eigenfrequencies of the anomalous modes of the system.

Slowing and storing light processes without a trapping dark state in a double two-level system. Theoretical study

F. A. Hashmi, Mahmoud Abdel‐Aty, M. A. Bouchène

We present a detailed theoretical study of a method for slowing light based on the oscillations of Zeeman coherences in a double two-level system [Hashmi, F.A.; Bouchene, M.A. Phys. Rev. A 2008, 77, 051803(R)]. This method does not require the presence of any trapping state. We focus on the properties and the limitations of such a method and compare it to previous ones. We also investigate the possibility of obtaining fast light and to store the light with such a method.
