Abstract

We demonstrate experimental results and analytical formulation of slow-light-enhanced self-phase modulation limited only by three-photon absorption. We present nonlinear figure-of-merits on three-photon-limited ultrafast switching, and critical intensities for free-carrier effects in photonic crystals.

Slow light enhanced nonlinear photonic functionalities

Marcel Spurny, Bill Corcoran, Christelle Monat +1 more

We discuss the enhancement of nonlinear functionalities in slow light photonic crystals. We show how slow light in photonic crystals is created, how nonlinear effects scale with the slowdown factor and what limits nonlinear effects in photonic crystals. We review some of the work recently reported in nonlinear optics in slow light photonic crystals and compare the observed effects to those found in other structures such as coupled resonators or photonic nanowires.

Effect of loss on slow-light enhanced absorption in liquid-infiltrated photonic crystals

Jesper R. Pedersen, Sanshui Xiao, Niels Asger Mortensen

We study slow-light enhancement of absorption measurements in photonic crystals composed of lossy dielectrics. We find that the material loss has an unexpected limited drawback and may even increase the bandwidth for low-index contrast systems.

Enhanced nonlinear optics in photonic-crystal microcavities

Jorge Bravo‐Abad, Alejandro W. Rodríguez, Peter A. Bermel +3 more

Focus Serial: Frontiers of Nonlinear Optics Nonlinear photonic-crystal microresonators offer unique fundamental ways of enhancing a variety of nonlinear optical processes. This enhancement improves the performance of nonlinear optical devices to such an extent that their corresponding operation powers and switching times are suitable for their implementation in realistic ultrafast integrated optical devices. Here, we review three different nonlinear optical phenomena that can be strongly enhanced in photonic crystal microcavities. First, we discuss a system in which this enhancement has been successfully demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally, namely, a photonic crystal cavity showing optical bistability properties. In this part, we also present the physical basis for this dramatic improvement with respect to the case of traditional nonlinear devices based on nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalons. Secondly, we show how nonlinear photonic crystal cavities can be also used to obtain complete second-harmonic frequency conversion at very low input powers. Finally, we demonstrate that the nonlinear susceptibility of materials can be strongly modified via the so-called Purcell effect, present in the resonant cavities under study.

Ultrafast Slow-Light Tuning Beyond the Carrier Lifetime Using Photonic Crystal Waveguides

Keisuke Kondo, Mizuki Shinkawa, Yohei Hamachi +3 more

We demonstrate ultrafast delay tuning of a slow-light pulse with a response time <10 ps. This is achieved using two types of slow light: dispersion-compensated slow light for the signal pulse, and low-dispersion slow light to enhance nonlinear effects of the control pulse. These two types of slow light are generated simultaneously in Si lattice-shifted photonic crystal waveguides, arising from flat and straight photonic bands, respectively. The control pulse blueshifts the signal pulse spectrum, through dynamic tuning caused by the plasma effect of two-photon-absorption-induced carriers. This changes the delay by up to 10 ps only when the two pulses overlap within the waveguide and enables ultrafast tuning that is not limited by the carrier lifetime. Using this, we succeeded in tuning the delay of one target pulse within a pulse train with 12 ps intervals.

Enhancing Light-Matter Interactions in Nanophotonic Structures by Slow Light

Jesper Mørk, Torben Roland Nielsen

We discuss the conditions under which photonic crystal dispersion can be used to enhance light-matter interactions, e.g. by increasing the absorption sensitivity or the degree of light-speed control obtained via electromagnetically induced transparency.
