Identification of Overlapping Optical Lines in Molecular Spectra by Means of the Coherent Population Trapping of Quantum Levels

Abstract

A new method of molecular beam spectroscopy with the ultrahigh resolution is theoretically sug- gested. This method is based on the phenomenon of the coherent population trapping of molecular levels and allows the identification of the overlapping optical lines in complex spectra (typical for polyatomic molecules), even when frequency intervals between the centers of given lines are less than their natural line widths. The theoretical analysis is carried out on the basis of the Schrodinger equation for the three-level molecular Λ -sys- tem interacting with the two-frequency laser radiation. The conditions of the practical realization and possible applications of the suggested spectroscopy method are discussed.

Identification of overlapping optical lines in molecular spectra by means of the coherent population trapping of quantum levels

A new method of molecular beam spectroscopy with the ultrahigh resolution is theoretically suggested. The theoretical analysis is carried out on the basis of the Schrödinger equation for the three-level molecular A-system interacting with the two-frequency laser radiation. The conditions of the practical realization and possible applications of the suggested spectroscopy method are discussed.

High contrast resonances of the coherent population trapping on sublevels of the ground atomic term

Ersoy Şahin, Ramiz Hamid, Cengiz Birlikseven +2 more

We have detected and analyzed narrow, high contrast coherent population trapping resonances, which appear in transmission of the probe monochromatic light beam under action of the counterpropagating two-frequency laser radiation, on example of the nonclosed three level Λ-system formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2 line of cesium atoms (in the cell with the rarefied Cs vapor). These nontrivial resonances are determined directly by the trapped atomic population on the definite lower level of the Λ-system and may be used in atomic frequency standards, sensitive magnetometers and in ultrahigh resolution laser spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

Coherent Population Trapping resonances on lower atomic levels of Doppler broadened optical lines

Ersoy Şahin, G. Özen, Ramiz Hamid +2 more

We have detected and analysed narrow high-contrast coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances, which are induced in absorption of the weak probe light beam by the counterpropagating two-frequency pumping radiation. Our experimental investigations have been carried out on example of nonclosed three level Lambda systems formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2 line of cesium atoms. We have established that CPT resonances in transmission of the probe beam (in the cesium vapor), at definite conditions, may have not only more contrast but also much lesser width in comparison with well- known CPT resonances in transmission of the corresponding two-frequency pumping radiation. Thus CPT resonances, detected by the elaborated method, may be used in atomic frequency standards and sensitive magnetometers (based on the CPT phenomenon) and also in ultahigh resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

Coherent population trapping in quantum systems

B. D. Agap'ev, M. B. Gornyi, Boris G. Matisov +1 more

Coherent population trapping (CPT) is a technique in ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy, developed in recent years. It relies on the nonlinear coherent interaction between an atomic system and incident electromagnetic radiation and is followed by an analysis of the fine structure of the response to this interaction, which contains information about the spectral characteristics of the quantum system. The basic physics of CPT are reviewed, and the effects of level relaxation and structure, and of external factors, on CPT dynamics and characteristics are examined. Experimental results confirming the validity of theoretical ideas on CPT are presented. Possible applications of CPT to frequency stabilization, laser cooling of atoms, and so on are discussed.

New Laser Technique for the Identification of Molecular Transitions

N. Skribanowitz, M. J. Kelly, Michael S. Feld

A laser technique is proposed which may be useful for the assignment of molecular spectra in the visible and infrared regions. The method is based on the resonant interaction of two monochromatic fields with a Doppler-broadened three-level system. Under the appropriate conditions the absorption line shape of one of the transitions shows a complex structure over a narrow section of the Doppler profile, and for sufficiently high laser power the line shape splits into a number of narrow peaks. Analysis of the resulting intensity pattern leads to unambiguous assignment of the angular momentum quantum numbers of the three levels involved. A simple set of rules is given to facilitate interpretation of spectra. The line shapes discussed are also relevant to monochromatic optical pumping of gases and unidirectional laser amplifiers.
