Abstract

The atom laser is compared with the photon laser. We also present the recent progress in the atom laser. The difference between the atom laser and the photon laser is used to realize the propagation and manipulation of the atom laser beam, such as the divergence, the reansverse mode of the atom laser beam, optics with the atom laser beam and the filement-ation in the atom-laser-beam propagation.

Laser Optics of Neutral Atomic Beams

V. I. Balykin, Vladilen S Letokhov

In ordinary optics one exploits the interaction of radiation with matter to manipulate beams of light. One can also turn the tables and control beams of charged or neutral material particles through their interaction with light. There are deep analogies and similarities between these two sorts of optics, even though they involve very different kinds of interactions between matter and radiation. Perhaps one can exploit every such interaction for some kind of “optics”—controlling beams of photons or massive particles. In this article we will describe recent developments in the laser optics of atomic beams—how experimenters are using the radiation pressure of laser light to manipulate neutral atoms.

Atomic Beam Manipulation and Atom Lithography

R. Ohmukai

Recent progress in manipulating atoms with laser beams has made it possible to fabricate nanostructures using atom optics. This technique is called atom lithography and is expected to overcome the present technical limitations of conventional lithographic methods. This paper reviews the principles behind and some experimental results on atomic beam manipulation and its application for engineering high-performance atom lithography.

Optics with an Atom Laser Beam

Immanuel Bloch, Michael Köhl, Markus Greiner +2 more

We report on the atom optical manipulation of an atom laser beam. Reflection, focusing, and its storage in a resonator are demonstrated. Precise and versatile mechanical control over an atom laser beam propagating in an inhomogeneous magnetic field is achieved by optically inducing spin flips between atomic ground states with different magnetic moment. The magnetic force acting on the atoms can thereby be effectively switched on and off. The surface of the atom optical element is determined by the resonance condition for the spin flip in the inhomogeneous magnetic field. More than 98% of the incident atom laser beam is reflected specularly.

Generating And Manipulating Atom Laser Beams

Tilman Esslinger, Immanuel Bloch, Markus Greiner +1 more

New levels of control over the atomic motion have been attained through the development of the atom laser. The unique properties of these coherent atomic sources open up a wide range of new possibilities in the fields of atom optics and precision measurement. In this article we have discussed the high contrast interference pattern obtained from an atom laser with two output modes of different energies. It should be possible to create a highly complex interference pattern in the output beam of an atom laser by applying a correspondingly tailored radio wave field for output coupling. A novel atom optical manipulation method allowed us to reflect, recapture and focus an atom laser beam. Due to its simplicity and precision the technique is ideally suited for creating an interferometer for the atom laser beam. It seems feasible to split the atom laser beam into two components and recombine it after delaying one of the two components. The resulting interference pattern would reveal the coherence properties of the atom laser beam.

Laser Manipulation of Atoms

Alain Aspect

Momentum exchange between atoms and photons allow laser physicists to control atomic motion. It is possible to decelerate and/or focus an atomic beam, to stop it. The average velocity of the almost stopped atoms can be decreased to very small values close to or even below the one photon recoil velocity V R = ħk L /M, corresponding to temperatures in the microkelvin range or below. Laser manipulation of atoms is also essential for the recently developing field of atom optics.
