New Approach to Monte Carlo Hamiltonian and Test

Abstract

Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method is a new algorithm for numerical simulation of quantum theories. The advantage is its ability to study spectrum and wave functions beyond the ground state. The previous approach needs information on free particles and is difficult to be used for lattice gauge theory. In this paper, we propose a new approach to MCH, which may overcome the difficulty. We describe the basic ideas, and use a 1-dimensional quantum mechanical model V(x) =μ2x2 + λx4(with μ2 0,λ 0) as an example.

MONTE CARLO HAMILTONIAN: GENERALIZATION TO QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

XIANG-QIAN LUO, HAMZA JIRARI, HELMUT KRÖGER +1 more

Monte Carlo techniques with importance sampling have been extensively applied to lattice gauge theory in the Lagrangian formulation. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to compute the excited states using the conventional Monte Carlo algorithm. Our recently developed approach: the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method, has been designed to overcome the difficulties of the conventional approach. In this paper, we extend the method to many body systems and quantum field theory. The Klein-Gordon field theory is used as a testing ground.

Optimization of trial wave functions for Hamiltonian lattice models

Matteo Beccaria A

We propose a new Monte Carlo algorithm for the numerical study of general lattice models in Hamiltonian form. The algorithm is based on an initial ansatz for the ground state wave function depending on a set of free parameters which are dynamically optimized. The method is discussed in detail and the results are reported from explicit simulations of a U(1) N chain, a degenerate limit of U(1) lattice gauge theory in $2+1$ dimensions.

Algorithm for computing excited states in quantum theory

X. Q. Luo

Monte Carlo techniques have been widely employed in statistical physics as well as in quantum theory in the Lagrangian formulation. However, in the conventional approach, it is extremely difficult to compute the excited states. Here we present a different algorithm: the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method, designed to overcome the difficulties of the conventional approach. As a new example, application to the Klein-Gordon field theory is shown.

Monte Carlo Hamiltonian: Linear Potentials

We further study the validity of the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian method. The advantage of the method,in comparison with the standard Monte Carlo Lagrangian approach, is its capability to study the excited states. Weconsider two quantum mechanical models: a symmetric one V(x) = |x|/2; and an asymmetric one V(x) = ∞, forx < 0 and V(x) = x, for x ≥ 0. The results for the spectrum, wave functions and thermodynamical observables are inagreement with the analytical or Runge-Kutta calculations.
