Antimirror Reflection of a Bounded Planar Optical Waveguide: the String Model

Abstract

The effect of antimirror reflection from a bounded planar optical waveguide is considered. Earlier, it was used for observing the slow light in a Bragg waveguide. Using the proposed theory of this effect, experimentally observed spectral (Gaussian line shape) and angular (Lorentzian angular distribution) properties of the radiation scattered by the bounded waveguide in the antimirror direction are interpreted.

Anti-mirror reflection of a bounded plane optical waveguide: string model

Pavel Yu. Shapochkin, Yury V. Kapitonov, G. G. Kozlov

The effect of anti-mirror reflection from a bounded plane optical waveguide used earlier for observation of slow light in a Bragg waveguide is considered. A theory of the effect is proposed that allowed us to interpret the observed spectral (Gaussian lineshape) and angular (Lorentzian angular profile) properties of the light scattered by the bounded waveguide in the anti-specular direction.

Resonant Light Scattering by Optical Solitons

Sergej Flach A, V. Fleurov, Andrey V. Gorbach +1 more

We consider the process of light scattering by optical solitons in a planar waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index cores. We observe resonant reflection (Fano resonances) as well as resonant transmission of light by optical solitons. All resonant effects can be controlled in experiment by changing the soliton intensity.

Light propagation in a resonantly absorbing waveguide array

Mingneng Feng, Yikun Liu, Yongyao Li +2 more

Light propagation behavior in a resonantly absorbing waveguide array is analyzed. Both a Lorentzian line shape and an inhomogeneous broadened absorbing line shape are considered, with their imaginary and real part of the refractive index determined by a Kramers-Kronig relationship. The diffracted wave is shown to have the frequency spectra determined by the material absorption, dispersion as well as the waveguide structure. An interesting phenomenon is that a spectral hole is produced and becomes deeper in the diffraction spectrum as the thickness of the resonantly absorbing waveguide array increases. The experimental measurements conducted in a waveguide array are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results.

Theory of Optical-Filtering Enhanced Slow and Fast Light Effects in Semiconductor Optical Waveguides

Yaohui Chen, Weiqi Xue, F. Öhman +1 more

A theoretical analysis of slow and fast light effects in semiconductor optical amplifiers based on coherent population oscillations and including the influence of optical filtering is presented. Optical filtering is shown to enable a significant increase of the controllable phase shift experienced by an intensity modulated signal traversing the waveguide. The theoretical model accounts for recent experimental results and is used to analyze and interpret the dependence on material and device parameters. Furthermore analytical approximations are derived using a perturbation approach and are used to gain a better physical understanding of the underlying phenomena.

Spatial hysteresis and switching waves in a nonlinear planar waveguide

Vladimir Yu. Bazhenov, M. S. Soskin, V. B. Taranenko

An experimental investigation was made of the transformation of the intensity profile of a spatially confined light beam reflected from a nonlinear planar waveguide. It was found that when the system exhibited optical bistability, a hysteresis of the intensity profile was observed and it was due to the formation and propagation of a switching wave in the waveguide layer. A hysteresis was also observed when a switching wave crossed the unilluminated part of the waveguide layer.

Resonant light-light interaction in slab waaaveguides: angular filters and spectral hole burning

Andrey V. Gorbach, V. Fleurov, Sergej Flach A +1 more

We consider a process of low-power light scattering by optical solitons in a slab waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index core. We observe a resonant reflection (Fano resonance) as well as a resonant transmission of light by optical solitons at certain incident angles. All resonant effects can be controlled experimentally by changing the soliton intensity and the relative frequency detuning between the soliton and the probe light beams.
