Abstract

The work deals with the influence of local field effects on the dynamics of exciton transitions in semiconductor structures with quantum dots. It is shown that in the field of ultrashort light pulse the dynamic frequency shift leads to the realization of oscillations of four types including bifurcational mode. The Rabi oscillations in the field of long pulse, when the phase relaxation effect becomes substantial, are analyzed. It is shown that in this case three modes of oscillations are realized. In addition, the transition from one oscillation frequency to another is observed. The moment of transition is determined by the phase relaxation rate and the value of its nonlinearity.

Rabi oscillations in a semiconductor quantum dot: Influence of local fields

The influence of electron-hole dipole-dipole interactions (local fields) on the excitonic Rabi oscillations in an isolated quantum dot (QD) has been theoretically investigated. An analysis for the QD interaction with monochromatic field and ultrashort Gaussian pulse has been performed. On the basis of optical Bloch equations the Rabi oscillation dynamics has been investigated. As a result, the bifurcation and essentially anharmonic regimes in the Rabi oscillations in a QD exposed to the monochromatic field have been predicted. The strong dependence of the period of Rabi oscillations on the QD depolarization has been revealed. For the Gaussian pulse it has been shown that the final state of inversion as a function of the pulse peak strength demonstrates step-like transitions.

AbstractAn overview on photon echo spectroscopy under resonant excitation of the exciton complexes in semiconductor nanostructures is presented. The use of four-wave-mixing technique with the pulsed excitation and heterodyne detection allowed us to measure the coherent response of the system with the picosecond time resolution. It is shown that, for resonant selective pulsed excitation of the localized exciton complexes, the coherent signal is represented by the photon echoes due to the inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. In case of resonant excitation of the trions or donor-bound excitons, the Zeeman splitting of the resident electron ground state levels under the applied transverse magnetic field results in quantum beats of photon echo amplitude at the Larmor precession frequency. Application of magnetic field makes it possible to transfer coherently the optical excitation into the spin ensemble of the resident electrons and to observe a long-lived photon echo signal. The described technique can be used as a high-resolution spectroscopy of the energy splittings in the ground state of the system. Next, we consider the Rabi oscillations and their damping under excitation with intensive optical pulses for the excitons complexes with a different degree of localization. It is shown that damping of the echo signal with increase of the excitation pulse intensity is strongly manifested for excitons, while on trions and donor-bound excitons this effect is substantially weaker.

Strong coupling between quantum dot and electromagnetic field: local field effects

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, A. Magyarov, С. А. Максименко +2 more

The influence of local fields on the excitonic Rabi oscillations in isolated, arbitrary shaped quantum dot (QD) has been theoretically investigated. Hamiltonian of the system "QD+electromagnetic field" has been obtained. Both QD interaction with classical electromagnetic field and ultrashort optical pulse has been considered. As a result, the bifurcation and anharmonism in the Rabi oscillations in a QD exposed to the monochromatic field have been predicted. The dependence of Rabi oscillations period on the QD depolarization parameter, which characterize local field has been obtained. It has been shown, that for the Gaussian pulse the final state of inversion as a function of peak pulse strength demonstrates step-like transitions.

Manifestation of local fields in excitonic Rabi oscillations in an isolated arbitrary shaped quantum dot (QD) has been theoretically investigated. Interaction of QD with harmonic electromagnetic field as well as with ultrashort optical pulse has been considered. Bifurcation and anharmonism in the Rabi oscillations in a QD are predicted. Step-like transitions of the inversion as a function of peak pulse strength are demonstrated to be observable in a QD exposed to a Gaussian pulse. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled quantum dots in the presence of a local field effect

We experimentally studied the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots using two-pulse photon echo spectroscopy. We observed the change in the shape of the Rabi oscillations by the second pulse intensity. Our experimental results were systematically reproduced by numerical calculations taking into account the local field effect arising from the Coulomb interaction between photoinduced charge densities in a quantum dot. Our experimental findings indicated that the local field effect contributes considerably to the coherent optical responses of the excitons in quantum dots.

Quantum optics of a quantum dot: Local-field effects

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, С. А. Максименко, A. Hoffmann +1 more

The role of local fields in quantum electrodynamics of isolated quantum dot (QD) has been analyzed. The system is modeled as a strongly confined in space two-level quantum oscillator illuminated by quantum light. Relation between local and acting fields in QD has been derived in the dipole approximation from the integral Maxwell equations for electromagnetic field operators. A formalism of the electromagnetic field quantization in electrically small scatterers has been developed. As a result, Hamiltonian of the system has been formulated in terms of the acting field with a separate term responsible for the effect of depolarization. Schr\"odinger equation with that Hamiltonian has been solved in linear approximation. Interaction of QD with different quantum states of light, such as Fock states, coherent states, Fock qubits, entangled states, has been analyzed. It has been shown that the local-fields induce a fine structure of the QD absorption (emission) spectrum: instead of a single line with the frequency corresponding to the exciton transition, a doublet appears with one component shifted to the blue (red). The value of the shift depends only on the geometrical and electronic properties of QD while the intensities of components are completely determined by the quantum light statistics. It has been demonstrated that in the limiting cases of classical light and single-photon state the doublet is reduced to a singlet shifted in the former case and unshifted in the latter one. A physical interpretation of the predicted effect has been proposed. Possible ways of experimental observation of the effect has been discussed together with the potentiality of its utilization in the quantum information processing.
