Deterministic nonclassicality from thermal states

Abstract

Coupling an oscillator to a single two-level system is one of the most fundamental interactions in quantum physics. We report on a dynamical effect during which a thermal state of an oscillator is unconditionally transformed to a highly nonclassical state with negative Wigner function values by mere absorbtion by a single uncontrolled two-level system. This complements the traditional test of Rabi oscillations and it serves as a simply measurable witness that the process in question is highly nonclassical. The process is experimentally feasible with possible experimental implementation in a number of experimental platforms with intrinsic Jaynes-Cummings interaction and it has the potential of enabling deterministic generation of nonclassical quantum states.

Deterministic nonclassicality for quantum-mechanical oscillators in thermal states

Petr Marek, Lukáš Lachman, L. Slodička +1 more

Quantum nonclassicality is the basic building stone for the vast majority of quantum information applications and methods of its generation are at the forefront of research. One of the obstacles any method needs to clear is the looming presence of decoherence and noise which act against the nonclassicality and often erase it completely. In this paper we show that nonclassical states of a quantum harmonic oscillator initially in thermal equilibrium states can be deterministically created by coupling it to a single two-level system. This can be achieved even in the absorption regime in which the two-level system is initially in the ground state. The method is resilient to noise and it may actually benefit from it, as witnessed by the systems with higher thermal energy producing more nonclassical states.

Unconditional Accumulation of Nonclassicality in a Single‐Atom Mechanical Oscillator

Lukáš Podhora, Tuan Pham Minh, Adam Lešundák +6 more

Abstract The robust experimental accumulation of nonclassicality of motion of a single trapped ion is reported. The nonclassicality stems from deterministic incoherent modulation of thermal phonon number distribution implemented by a laser excitation of nonlinear coupling between the ion's internal—electronic levels and external—motional states. It is demonstrated that the repetitive application of this nonlinear process monotonically accumulates the observable state nonclassicality. The output states converge to a phonon number distribution with high overlap with a particular Fock state and visible quantum non‐Gaussian aspects including corresponding negative Wigner function. The resulting oscillator states prove deterministic transition in the hierarchy of quantum non‐Gaussianity up to four phonons. This transition is very robust against experimental imperfections and produces increasing entanglement potential.

Nonclassicality of noisy quantum states

А. А. Семенов, Dmytro Vasylyev, Bohdan I. Lev

Abstract. Nonclassicality conditions for an oscillator-like system interacting with a hot thermal bath are considered. Nonclassical properties of quantum states can be conserved up to a certain temperature threshold only. In this case affection of the thermal noise can be compensated via transformation of an observable, which tests the nonclassicality (witness function). Possibilities for experimental implementations based on unbalanced homodyning are discussed. At the same time we demonstrate that the scheme based on balanced homodyning cannot be improved for noisy states with proposed technique and should be applied directly. Negative Wigner function by decaying interaction from equilibrium

Michal Kolář, Radim Filip

Bosonic systems with negative Wigner function superposition states are fundamentally witnessing nonlinear quantum dynamics beyond linearized systems and, recently, have become essential resources of quantum technology with many applications. Typically, they appear due to sophisticated combination of external drives, nonlinear control, measurements or strong nonlinear dissipation of subsystems to an environment. Here, we propose a conceptually different and more autonomous way to obtain such states, avoiding these ingredients, using purely sudden interaction decay in the paradigmatic interacting qubit-oscillator system weakly coupled to bath at thermal equilibrium in a low-temperature limit. We demonstrate simultaneously detectable unconditional negative Wigner function and quantum coherence and their qualitative enhancement employing more qubits.

Generation of nonclassical states from thermal radiation

Valentina Parigi, Alessandro Zavatta, Marco Bellini

We show the experimental observation of quantum states of light exhibiting nonclassical features obtained by single photon excitation of a thermal state. Such single-photon-added thermal states are the result of the single action of the creation operator on a mixed state that can be fully described classically. They show different degree of nonclassicality depending on the mean photon number of the original thermal state. The generated state is characterized by means of ultra-fast homodyne detection which allows us to reconstruct its density matrix and Wigner function by quantum tomography. We demonstrate the nonclassical behavior of single-photon added thermal states by an analysis of the negativity of the Wigner function.
