Signatures of energy transfer and multi-exciton states on exciton Rabi oscillation in semiconductor nanocrystals

Abstract

The theory of coherent energy transfer in nanocrystal (NC) systems is generalised for multi-exciton states. We study the effect of the Forster coupling between two individual semiconductor nanocrystals on the pump and induced Rabi oscillations (ROs). The relevant excitonic states in an isolated NC can be described by an effective four-state system, consisting of the ground state, the exciton state, the biexciton state and the triexciton state. The dynamics of a single donor-acceptor pair is described using a density matrix approach that incorporates dipole coupling to multi-exciton states. Our study shows that for short pulse the multi-exciton states play an important role in the dynamics. We also show that the amplitude and the period of the ROs in both dots are heavily influenced by Forster coupling strength. The quality factor of the induced ROs in the acceptor yields information on the energy transfer rate between the two dots. We present result for a variety of sample materials and realistic structure parameters.

EXCITATION ENERGY TRANSFER IN QUANTUM-DOT SOLIDS

Ameenah N. Al‐Ahmadi

We study the dynamics of excitonic states in one dimensional, dimer and trimer, and two dimensional arrangements of colloidal quantum dots using a density-matrix approach. The dots are coupled via a dipole-dipole interaction akin to the Förster mechanism.Coherent oscillations of tuned donor dots are shown to appear as plateaus in the acceptor dots, and therefore in their optical response. This behavior provides one with an interesting and unique handle to monitor the quantum state of clusters in an eavesdroping arrangement.A trimer cluster in a symmetrical loop shows steady states in a shorter characteristic time than the typical radiative lifetime of the dots.Breaking the symmetry of the loop results again in damping oscillatory states in the donor dots and plateaus in the eavesdropping/acceptor dot.The use of realistic parameters allows direct comparison with recent experiments and indicates that coherent state monitoring is possible in real experiments.Estimates of the Förster coupling V F are obtained from a microscopic description of the exciton levels in the quantum dot.We present results for different materials CdS, CdSe, GaAs, and InP as function of dot features.V F shows a nonmonotonic variation with dot sizes and a maximum value that depends on the specific dot sizes, material parameters, and dot separation. We also study the effect of the orientation factor on coherent energy transfer from a donor quantum dot to an acceptor quantum dot by calculating the polarization of the acceptor dot.We study how the measurement of the ac-ceptor polarization can be used to determine the relative orientation between the donor-acceptor pair.We also find that Förster coupling between dots results in a polarization memory transfer.

Förster Blockade and Excitation Transfer Behaviors of Two-Photon Rabi Oscillations of Exciton–Biexciton Levels in Coupled Quantum Dots

Ameenah N. Al‐Ahmadi

We provide a theoretical study for the dynamical behavior of two-photon Rabi oscillations in two coupled quantum dots. Each dot is a three-level quantum system (ground, one-exciton, and biexciton states). We describe the optical dynamics within the density matrix formalism framework. The two-photon Rabi oscillations are found to be significantly affected by the strength of the interdot dipolar interaction. Using a detuned laser pulse with an exciton state of the driven quantum dot in our numerical simulations, a direct coherent excitation between the biexciton states can be established, but whether Rabi oscillations can be observed depend mainly on the strength of the dipolar interaction and bandwidth of the excitation laser. When the strength of the dipolar coupling is less than the excitation laser bandwidth, the time-dependent populations of the various two biexciton states of the system exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. However, as we increase the dipolar coupling strength, the population transfer between the quantum dots levels amazingly becomes forbidden, and the excitation gets trapped at the initial state. The reduction of the influence of the dipolar interaction leads to a manipulation of two-photon Rabi oscillation in an ultrashort timescale (∼ps), opening possibilities to achieve ultrafast quantum state control and quantum logic gate generation.

Theory of ultrafast nonlinear optics of Coulomb-coupled semiconductor quantum dots: Rabi oscillations and pump-probe spectra

J. Danckwerts, Kwang Jun Ahn, Jens Förstner +1 more

We investigate the optical properties of a Coulomb-coupled double-quantum dot system excited by coherent light pulses. Basic effects of Coulomb coupling regarding linear and nonlinear optical processes are discussed. By numerically solving the Heisenberg equation of motion we are able to present the temporal evolution of the system's density matrix for a wide range of coupling parameters. The two main coupling effects in dipole approximation, biexcitonic shift and F\"orster energy transfer, are investigated and their qualitative and quantitative influence on absorption spectra, Rabi oscillations, and single- and two-pulse excitation is discussed. We present simulated differential transmission spectra to allow for comparison with recent experimental studies.

Exciton absorption properties of coherently coupled exciton-biexciton systems in quantum dots

Hideki Gotoh, Hidehiko Kamada, Tadashi Saitoh +2 more

Exciton-biexciton coherent coupling effects are examined in semiconductor quantum dots. The exciton absorption spectrum is measured with the microphotoluminescence excitation technique in a single InGaAs quantum dot. The spectrum changes from a Lorenztian-type line shape to an unusual dip-shaped line shape with increasing excitation intensities in a higher exciton state where there is a large oscillator strength between the exciton and biexciton states. The intensity dependence of the dip energy width clearly indicates that coherent Rabi oscillation occurs between the exciton and biexciton states. The absorption properties with excitation light of different polarizations show that the dip-shaped spectra only appear when there is a large biexciton state population with linear polarization. A theoretical analysis undertaken with the density matrix method agrees well with experimental results. This agreement reveals that exciton-biexciton coherent interactions lead to unusual absorption spectra and contribute crucially to the optical properties of quantum dots. The exciton-biexciton coherent effects provide a scheme for controlling four distinguishable states, which can be applied to a demonstration of quantum gate operations.

The effect of biexciton, wetting layer leakage and Auger capture on Rabi oscillation damping in quantum dots

Liu Shao-Ding, Mu-Tian Cheng, Huijun Zhou +4 more

The decoherence of Rabi oscillation with multi-level processes in semiconductor quantum dots excited by laser pulses is investigated. By using population dynamic equations of multi-level system, the effect of three kinds of multi-level processes on the damping of Rabi oscillation in quantum dots are numerically simulated and discussed. The effect of biexciton can be neglected when the pulse width is larger than 5ps; the population leakage to wetting layer results in the decreasing of the amplitude and average of the population oscillation on the exciton ground state with the increasing of the excitation intensity; the effect of the two kinds of Auger capture processes on the Rabi oscillation and the spectral width of the photoluminescence from the exciton recombination are also discussed.

Quality Factor and Decoherence Mechanism of Rabi Oscillation in Semiconductor Quantum Dot

Si Xiao

The Rabi oscillations of the exciton of the excited state in single semiconductor quantum dots were investigated by using the photoluminesence and nano-spectroscopy technique. The population on the excited state oscillated as a function of phase angle of the qubit were recorded, in which pulse-pairs with the adjustable time delay were used as the excitation. The quality factors of free rotation is about 9.8×104, and that of the dynamic rotation is about 18 for the single quantum dot excitonic qubit based on the experimental observations, The decoherece mechanism of Rabi oscillation stem from the capture processes from wetting layer to quantum dot is also analyzed. The exciton coherent control and the statistic characteristics of single photon emission in single semiconductor quantum dot are discussed as well.
