Abstract

(PPLN) ridge waveguide device and experimentally demonstrated a phase-sensitive optical parametric amplification. The highly efficient net phase-sensitive parametric gain of +18.6 dB is obtained in a cascaded second harmonic generation and difference frequency generation configuration. The phase-sensitive gain is greater by +5.8 dB in comparison with the phase-insensitive gain. We successfully confirmed the phase-sensitive amplification with a high gain in the PPLN ridge waveguide.

Phase sensitive amplification with noise figure below the 3 dB quantum limit using CW pumped PPLN waveguide

Masaki Asobe, Takeshi Umeki, Osamu Tadanaga

The noise figure (NF) of a phase sensitive amplifier (PSA) based on a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) waveguide was evaluated in the optical and electrical domains. Phase sensitive amplification was realized using degenerate parametric amplification in the PPLN waveguide, which was pumped by the second harmonic frequency of the signal. Second harmonic pumping enables direct observation of the intrinsic amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), which determined the NF of the PSA. An NF below the 3 dB quantum limit was obtained by observing the intrinsic ASE. The low NF was also confirmed via the noise floor measurement of a cascaded PSA and erbium doped fiber amplifier in the electrical domain. The PSA was used as a preamplifier for detecting a 40 Gbit/s phase shift keying signal. The low noise characteristics were confirmed by the improved sensitivity.

Phase sensitive amplification based on quadratic cascading in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide

Kwang Jo Lee, Francesca R. Parmigiani, Sheng Liu +4 more

We propose and demonstrate phase-sensitive amplification based on cascaded second harmonic generation and difference frequency generation within a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. Excellent agreement between our numerical simulations and proof-of-principle experiments using a 3-cm waveguide device operating at wavelengths around 1550 nm is obtained. Our experiments confirm the validity and practicality of the approach and illustrate the broad gain bandwidths achievable. Additional simulation results show that the maximum gain/attenuation factor increases quadratically with input pump power, reaching a value of +/- 19.0 dB at input pump powers of 33 dBm for a 3 cm-long waveguide. Increased gains/reduced powers for a fixed gain could be achieved using longer crystals.

High-gain, wide-dynamic-range parametric interaction in Mg-doped LiNbO_3 quasi-phase-matched adhered ridge waveguide

Rai Kou, Sunao Kurimura, Kiyofumi Kikuchi +4 more

With recent developments and optimizations for quasi-phase-matched adhered ridge waveguide (QPM-ARW), outstanding performances containing efficient amplification were demonstrated by difference frequency generation (DFG) and optical parametric amplification (OPA). A maximum channel conversion efficiency of +7.6 dB (570%) was achieved in a telecommunication band using a 50 mm-long device, when coupling with 160 mW pump. Simultaneously, the input signal was amplified up to +9.5 dB (890%).
