Dynamics and complex structure of two-dimensional skyrmions in antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

Motivated by the recent experiment of Choi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 035301 (2012)], we simulate, within the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the process of creating a skyrmion in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate via the magnetic-field rotation method. Complex skymion structures are found and the factors influencing them are discussed. The dynamics of the system is mainly quasiperiodic. When the center of the skyrmion is displaced from the trap center, half vortices can be found at an intermediate stage of the dynamical evolution, but they do not necessarily lead to the destruction of the skyrmions.

Creation and dynamics of two-dimensional skyrmions in antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Tuomas Ollikainen, Emmi Ruokokoski, Mikko Möttönen

We numerically simulate the creation process of two-dimensional skyrmionic excitations in antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates by solving the full three-dimensional dynamics of the system from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our simulations reproduce quantitatively the experimental results of Choi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 035301 (2012)] without any fitting parameters. Furthermore, we examine the stability of the skyrmion by computing the temporal evolution of the condensate in a harmonic potential. The presence of both the quadratic Zeeman effect and dissipation in the simulations is vital for reproducing the experimentally observed decay time.

Observation of Topologically Stable 2D Skyrmions in an Antiferromagnetic Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

Jae-yoon Choi, Woo Jin Kwon, Yong-il Shin

We present the creation and time evolution of two-dimensional Skyrmion excitations in an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Using a spin rotation method, the Skyrmion spin textures were imprinted on a sodium condensate in a polar phase, where the two-dimensional Skyrmion is topologically protected. The Skyrmion was observed to be stable on a short time scale of a few tens of ms but to dynamically deform its shape and eventually decay to a uniform spin texture. The deformed spin textures reveal that the decay dynamics involves breaking the polar phase inside the condensate without having topological charge density flow through the boundary of the finite-sized sample. We discuss the possible formation of half-quantum vortices in the deformation process.

Excitation spectra of a Bose-Einstein condensate with an angular spin-orbit coupling

Ivana Vasić, Antun Balaž

A theoretical model of a Bose-Einstein condensate with angular spin-orbit coupling has recently been proposed and it has been established that a half-skyrmion represents the ground state in a certain regime of spin-orbit coupling and interaction. Here we investigate low-lying excitations of this phase by using the Bogoliubov method and numerical simulations of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that a sudden shift of the trap bottom results in a complex two-dimensional motion of the system's center of mass that is markedly different from the response of a competing phase, and comprises two dominant frequencies. Moreover, the breathing mode frequency of the half-skyrmion is set by both the spin-orbit coupling and the interaction strength, while in the competing state it takes a universal value. Effects of interactions are especially pronounced at the transition between the two phases.

Spin-orbit-coupling-induced half-skyrmion excitations in rotating and rapidly quenched spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Chaofei Liu, Weijian Liu

We investigate the half-skyrmion excitations induced by spin-orbit coupling in the rotating and rapidly quenched spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. We give three expressions of the corresponding spin vectors to describe the half-skyrmion. Our results show that the half-skyrmion excitation depends on the combination of spin-orbit coupling and rotation, and it originates from a dipole structure of spin which is always embedded in three vortices constructed by each condensate component respectively. When both the strength of spin-orbit coupling and the rotation frequency are larger than some critical values, the half-skyrmions encircle the center with one or several circles to form a radial lattice, which occurs even in the strong ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic condensates. We can use both the spin-orbit coupling and the rotation to adjust the radial lattice. The realization and the detection of the half-skyrmions are compatible with current experimental technology.

Skyrmion dynamics and disintegration in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

Xiaoqiang Xu, Jung Hoon Han

Dynamics of skyrmionic spin texture in the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is examined by analytical and numerical means. We show the skyrmion (coreless vortex) to be inherently unstable in the sense that the state initially prepared purely within the antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) order parameter manifold inevitably evolves into a mixture of both. The vorticity-dependent drift in the presence of the trapping potential also contributes to the disintegration of the initial spin texture manifold. We argue that the notion of a skyrmion as a topologically protected entity becomes ill defined during the dynamical evolution process.

Spontaneous crystallization of skyrmions and fractional vortices in fast-rotating and rapidly quenched spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

SW Su, CH Hsueh, I-Kang Liu +4 more

We investigate the spontaneous generation of crystallized topological defects via the combining effects of fast rotation and rapid thermal quench on spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). By solving the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we show that, when the system reaches equilibrium, a hexagonal lattice of skyrmions and a square lattice of half-quantized vortices can be formed in a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spinor BEC, respectively, which can be imaged by using the polarization-dependent phase-contrast method.
