Simultaneous resonances in oscillations of the center-of-mass position and width of matter-wave solitons, induced by periodic modulation of the strength of the harmonic trap are studied. Corresponding domains in the system’s parameter space are identified.
We analyze the motion of solitons in a self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate, loaded into a quasi-one-dimensional parabolic potential trap, which is subjected to time-periodic modulation with an amplitude epsilon and frequency Omega. First, we apply the variational approximation, which gives rise to decoupled equations of motion for the center-of-mass coordinate of the soliton, xi (t), and its width a (t). The equation for xi (t) is the ordinary Mathieu equation (ME) (it is an exact equation that does not depend on the adopted ansatz), the equation for a (t) being a nonlinear generalization of the ME. Both equations give rise to the same map of instability zones in the (epsilon,Omega) plane, generated by the parametric resonances (PRs), if the instability is defined as the onset of growth of the amplitude of the parametrically driven oscillations. In this sense, the double PR is predicted. Direct simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation give rise to a qualitatively similar but quantitatively different stability map for oscillations of the soliton's width a (t). In the direct simulations, we identify the soliton dynamics as unstable if the instability (again, realized as indefinite growth of the amplitude of oscillations) can be detected during a time comparable with, or smaller than, the lifetime of the condensate (therefore accessible to experimental detection). Two-soliton configurations are also investigated. It is concluded that multiple collisions between solitons are elastic, and they do not affect the instability borders.
We study, analytically and numerically, the dynamics of a matter-wave soliton formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate with an attractive interatomic interaction confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap and subjected to a flashing weak periodic potential. Within the framework of the Gross-Pitaevski equation, we show that efficient energy transfer to the soliton occurs within two distinct frequency regimes: (a) on resonance with the trapping frequency and (b) on resonance with the internal mode of the soliton. We find that the former regime is well described within the soliton-as-particle approximation, while the latter relies on the extended nature of the localized state and involves strong excitations of the width coupled to translational motion.
We consider a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with contact and long-range dipolar interactions, under the action of the time-periodic modulation applied to the harmonic-oscillator and optical-lattice trapping potentials. The modulation results in generation of a variety of harmonics in oscillations of the condensate's width and centre-of-mass coordinate. These include multiple and combinational harmonics, represented by sharp peaks in the system's spectra. Approximate analytical results are produced by the variational method, which are verified by systematic simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This article is part of the theme issue 'New trends in pattern formation and nonlinear dynamics of extended systems'.
The dynamics of a matter-wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential, are analyzed. In numerical experiments we observe the Fermi-type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared to the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and qualitative agreement between them is found.
We investigate the quantum tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a optical trap. We show that periodic pulses of coherent matter are emitted from the trap by using an oscillating energy barrier. Moreover, the emitted fraction of condensed atoms strongly increases if the period of oscillation of the height of the energy barrier is in parametric resonance with the period of oscillation of the center of mass of the condensate inside the potential well. Our model is analyzed by numerically solving the nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation (NPSE), an effective one-dimensional equation which describes the macroscopic wavefunction of Bose condensates under transverse harmonic confinement. The range of validity of NPSE is discussed and compared with that of Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
