Abstract

Abstract Using the density matrix approach and iterative method, we have theoretically investigated the optical properties of a disk-like quantum dot (QD) with hard-wall confining potential subjected to an external static magnetic field in the presence of a Rashba spin–orbit interaction. The results of numerical calculations for the typical InAs QD show that the linear, nonlinear and total absorption coefficients (ACs) and refractive index (RI) changes are sensitive to the parameters of the magnetic field and dot size. Moreover, the resonance peaks of ACs and RI changes redshift when increasing the Rashba spin–orbit interaction strength. The role of this interaction as a control parameter on the ACs and RI changes has been demonstrated in detail.

Optical properties of wedge-shaped quantum dots under Rashba spin–orbit interaction

Reza Khordad

In the present paper, the optical properties of a GaAs wedge-shaped quantum dot (QD) under the effect of Rashba spin–orbit interaction (SOI) are theoretically studied. For this purpose, we have used analytical expressions for optical properties obtained by the compact-density matrix formalism. The dependence of the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes on the strength of Rashba SOI for different angles and different radii of wedge-shaped QD has been studied. According to the obtained results, it is found that (i) the Rashba SOI does not have considerable effects on the refractive index changes maxima. (ii) The total absorption coefficient is increased and shifted towards higher energies with considering the Rashba SOI. (iii) The influence of Rashba SOI on the optical properties depends on the parameters such as apex angle and radius of the wedge-shaped QD.

Electron-related nonlinear optical properties of cylindrical quantum dot with the Rosen–Morse axial potential

Fatih Ungan, Mustafa Kemal Bahar, Suvajit Pal +1 more

Abstract We present a theoretical study on the effects of intense laser field (ILF) and static electric field on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of a cylindrical quantum dot with Rosen–Morse axial potential under the framework of effective mass and parabolic band approximations. This study also takes into account the effects of the structure parameters ( η , V 1 , and R ). The analytical expressions of the linear, third-order nonlinear and total optical absorption coefficients (TOACs) and the relative refractive index changes (RRICs) are obtained by using the compact-density-matrix approach. The results of numerical calculations show that the resonant peak position of the TOACs and RRICs shifts towards lower energies and the magnitude of the peak increases with the effect of the static electric field and ILF. In addition, it is observed that while the resonant energies of the TOACs and RRICs of system shift towards the higher (lower) energies with the enhancement of η , V 1 , they decrease with the augmentation of R . Thus, the findings of this study show that the optical properties of the structure can be adjusted by changing the magnitude of structure parameters and applied external fields.

Effects of the Magnetic Field on the Linear and Nonlinear Optical Absorption Coefficients and the Refractive Index Changes in a Spherical Quantum Dot

Muharrem Kırak, Sait Yılmaz, Mustafa Gençaslan

The linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients (ACs) and the refractive index change (RIC) for a spherical quantum dot, having a hydrogenic impurity under an applied magnetic field have been theoretically studied. In numerical calculations, a variational scheme is adopted within effective mass approximation to determine the energy eigenvalues for the impurtiy. The variations of impurity binding energy with the dot radius, the linear and nonlinear ACs and RIC with the photon energy are investigated and effect of homogeneous magnetic field strength is discussed on these optical properties. It has been found that the binding energy, ACs and RIC are sensitively dependent on the magnetic field strength. Moreover, the calculated results also indicate that the absorption peak energies move to higher energies with increasing magnetic field.

Dependence of nonlinear optical properties on electrostatic interaction in an excitonic parabolic quantum dot in a static magnetic field

Monica Gambhir, Vinod Prasad

The linear and the third-order nonlinear optical properties of an exciton confined in a three-dimensional quantum dot with a parabolic potential are studied in a static magnetic field. Eigenvalues, wave functions, dipole matrix elements and selection rules are calculated analytically. Based on the calculated energies and wave functions, within the effective mass approximation, a compact-density matrix approach is employed to analyse the absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. The study is first of its kind since the excitonic effects are studied in a static magnetic field considering both the confinement potential and the electrostatic interaction between the electron-hole pair. An important finding of our research is the dependence of the magnitude of absorption coefficients on the radius of the quantum dot, the result that may have broad implications in future device designing.

Tuning of nonlinear optical characteristics of a cylindrical quantum dot by external fields and structure parameters

Mohammed Jaouane, Ahmed Sali, Esin KASAPOĞLU +1 more

In this present study, we have theoretically investigated the effect of applied external electric field and non-resonant intense laser field, as well as the adjustable physical parameters (A, M, and η) of the system, on the linear and nonlinear of GaAs/GaAlAs cylindrical quantum dot. The confinement potential of the quantum dot is composed of the axial potential with a Razavy-type quantum well in the z-direction, and the cylindrical-type potential in the radial direction. To achieve this goal, the wave functions, and the corresponding eigenvalues of the electron are investigated by resolving the time-independent Schrödinger equation using the diagonalisation technique in terms of the effective mass approximation. The linear and nonlinear optical properties’ expressions have been calculated with the help of the compact density matrix method. Our numerical results show that by changing the A, M, and η parameters, we can see a blueshift or redshift in the total optical absorption coefficients (TOACs) and relative refractive index changes (RRICs). Additionally, they are redshifted, and their extrema increase as the radius increases. The increase in electric field or laser field intensities generates a strong displacement of the resonant peak position towards the higher energies, diminishes the TOACs magnitude, and shrinks RRICs extrema. The model potential used in the computation is important, and the study of it will be practical in the development and research of nanostructures systems.

Absorption Spectra and Refractive Index Changes of an Exciton in a Core/Shell Quantum Dot

Wenfang Xie

Abstract The absorption spectra and the refractive index changes are calculated theoretically for an exciton in a core/shell quantum dot. The advantage of our methodology is that one can investigate the influence of the repulsive core by varying two parameters in the confinement potential. The dimensionality effect of exciton quantum dots on the optical absorptions has been studied. It has been found that in the same regime, the optical absorption intensities of excitons are much smaller for the core/shell quantum dots than for the two-dimensional quantum rings. The linear and the nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes have been examined with the change of the confinement potential. The results show that the optical absorptions and the refractive index changes are strongly affected by the repulsive core of core/shell quantum dots. Moreover, the calculated results also reveal that as the inner radius increases, the peak values of the absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes of an exciton will show the optical Aharonov-Bohm oscillation in core/shell quantum dots.
