Abstract

We study the collective modes and density fluctuations of a one-dimensional (1D) harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the presence of the pairing state using the time-dependent-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory within the hydrodynamic equations. We derive analytical expressions for the mode frequencies and the density fluctuations of the pairing state which constitutes the minority component at low temperature and feels an effective external potential exerted by the majority component i.e. the condensate. Our predictions on the breathing mode oscillations of the condensate are in good agreement with the data of recent experiments and Monte carlo simulations.

Collective modes of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas in the presence of the anomalous density

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We study the collective modes of a one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the anomalous density using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Within the hydrodynamic equations, we derive analytical expressions for the mode frequencies and the density fluctuations of the anomalous density which constitutes the minority component at very low temperature and feels an effective external potential exerted by the majority component, i.e., the condensate. On the other hand, we numerically examine the temperature dependence of the breathing mode oscillations of the condensate at finite temperature in the weak-coupling regime. At zero temperature, we compare our predictions with available experimental data, theoretical treatments, and Monte carlo simulations in all interaction regimes and the remaining hindrances are emphasized. We show that the anomalous correlations have a non-negligible role on the collective modes at both zero and finite temperatures.

Collective modes and generation of a new vortex in a trapped Bose gas at finite temperature

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

The dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is studied at nonzero temperatures using our variational time-dependent-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism. We have shown that this approach is an efficient tool to study the expansion and collective excitations of the condensate, the thermal cloud, and the anomalous correlation function at nonzero temperatures. We have found that the condensate and the anomalous density have the same breathing oscillations. We have investigated, on the other hand, the behavior of a single quantized vortex in a harmonically trapped BEC at nonzero temperatures. Generalized expressions for vortex excitations, vortex core size, and Kelvin modes have been derived. An important and somehow surprising result is that the numerical solution of our equations predicts that the vortex core is partially filled by the thermal atoms at nonzero temperatures. We have shown that the effect of thermal fluctuations is important and it may lead to enhancing the size of the vortex core. The behavior of the singly anomalous vortex has also been studied at nonzero temperatures.

Collective excitations of a dilute Bose gas at finite temperature: time dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Nadia Guebli

Abstract Using the time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approach, where the condensate is coupled with the thermal cloud and the anomalous density, we study the equilibrium and the dynamical properties of three-dimensional quantum-degenerate Bose gas at finite temperature. Effects of the anomalous correlations on the condensed fraction and the critical temperature are discussed. In uniform Bose gas, useful expressions for the Bogoliubov excitations spectrum, the first and second sound, the condensate depletion and the superfluid fraction are derived. Our results are tested by comparing the findings computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present also a systematic investigation of the collective modes of a Bose condensate confined in an external trap. Our predictions are in qualitative agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results. We show in particular that our theory is capable of explaining the so-called anomalous behavior of the m = 0 mode.

Collective and single-particle excitations of a trapped Bose gas

The density of states of a Bose-condensed gas confined in a harmonic trap is investigated. The predictions of Bogoliubov theory are compared with those of Hartree-Fock theory and of the hydrodynamic model. We show that the Hartree-Fock scheme provides an excellent description of the excitation spectrum in a wide range of energy, revealing a major role played by single-particle excitations in these confined systems. The crossover from the hydrodynamic regime, holding at low energies, to the independent-particle regime is explicitly explored by studying the frequency of the surface mode as a function of their angular momentum. The applicability of the semiclassical approximation for the excited states is also discussed. We show that the semiclassical approach provides simple and accurate formulas for the density of states and the quantum depletion of the condensate.

Collective modes of a harmonically trapped one-dimensional Bose gas: The effects of finite particle number and nonzero temperature

Xiao-Long Chen, Yun Li, Hui Hu

Following the idea of the density-functional approach, we develop a generalized Bogoliubov theory of an interacting Bose gas confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap by using a local chemical potential, calculated with the Lieb-Liniger exact solution, as the exchange energy. At zero temperature, we use the theory to describe collective modes of a finite-particle system in all interaction regimes from the ideal gas limit to the mean-field Thomas-Fermi regime and to the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau regime. At finite temperature, we investigate the temperature dependence of collective modes in the weak-coupling regime by means of a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation. By emphasizing the effects of finite particle number and nonzero temperature on collective-mode frequencies, we compare our results with a recent experimental measurement [E. Haller et al., Science 325, 1224 (2009)] and some previous theoretical predictions. We show that the experimental data are still not fully explained within current theoretical framework.

Mean-field approach to excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate gas at finite temperatures

M. Tohyama

The monopole and quadrupole oscillations of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) gas trapped in a spherically symmetric potential are calculated using the time-dependent Hartree approximation which enables us to use an orthonormal single-particle basis for the description of both the condensate and noncondensate components. It is found that the monopole mode has a much smaller damping rate than the quadrupole mode. The obtained temperature dependence of the frequency shifts and the damping rates of the collective oscillations are found to be consistent with experimental data obtained for BEC gases in anisotropic trapping potentials. A comparison between the time-dependent Hartree approximation and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation is also made and it is found that there is a rather small difference.
