Abstract

A particle with position–dependent mass moving in a double well potential is investigated. An exact instanton solution is given and tunnelling effect caused by it is considered. We calculate the energy of the ground state of this model by introducing some effective mass and frequency of oscillator.

Position-dependent mass oscillators and coherent states

Sara Cruz y Cruz, Óscar Rosas-Ortiz

The solving of the Schrodinger equation for a position-dependent mass quantum system is studied in two ways. First, it is found the interaction which must be applied on a mass m(x) in order to supply it with a particular spectrum of energies. Second, given a specific potential V(x) acting on the mass m(x), the related spectrum is found. The method of solution is applied to a wide class of position-dependent mass oscillators and the corresponding coherent states are constructed. The analytical expressions of such position-dependent mass coherent states preserve the functional structure of the Glauber states.

Tunneling dynamics of a double‐well oscillator: Effects of barrier fluctuation and thermal modulation

Aparna Saha, Pranab Sarkar

Abstract The tunneling dynamics of a particle moving in a bistable potential with fluctuating barrier is studied. For barriers fluctuating randomly in time we show by exact numerical calculation the significant effect of barrier fluctuation on the tunneling behavior of the particle. At nonzero temperatures the computed tunneling rate constant passes through a maximum when plotted against fluctuation frequency. The resonant frequency (at which the maximum appears) slowly decreases with increase in temperature and attains a constant value at higher temperature and it increases linearly with increase in barrier height of the potential. Another important observation is that in presence of barrier fluctuation the dependence of tunneling rate constant on temperature is strongly guided by the barrier fluctuation frequency. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Macroscopic quantum coherence and tunnelling in a double well potential

David Waxman

The quantum tunnelling and coherence of a particle moving in a biased or unbiased double well potential and subject to ohmic dissipation is considered. The complete time dependence of the reduced density matrix is determined for the case where the dimensionless friction constant alpha <<1.

Exact solution and coherent states of an asymmetric oscillator with position-dependent mass

Bruno G. da Costa, Ignacio S. Gomez, Biswanath Rath

We revisit the problem of the deformed oscillator with position-dependent mass [da Costa et al., J. Math. Phys. 62, 092101 (2021)] in the classical and quantum formalisms by introducing the effect of the mass function in both kinetic and potential energies. The resulting Hamiltonian is mapped into a Morse oscillator by means of a point canonical transformation from the usual phase space (x, p) to a deformed one (xγ, Πγ). Similar to the Morse potential, the deformed oscillator presents bound trajectories in phase space corresponding to an anharmonic oscillatory motion in classical formalism and, therefore, bound states with a discrete spectrum in quantum formalism. On the other hand, open trajectories in phase space are associated with scattering states and continuous energy spectrum. Employing the factorization method, we investigate the properties of the coherent states, such as the time evolution and their uncertainties. A fast localization, classical and quantum, is reported for the coherent states due to the asymmetrical position-dependent mass. An oscillation of the time evolution of the uncertainty relationship is also observed, whose amplitude increases as the deformation increases.

On the solutions of the position-dependent effective mass Schrödinger equation of a nonlinear oscillator related with the isotonic oscillator

R. A. Kraenkel, Murugaian Senthilvelan

We study exact solutions of the position-dependent effective mass Schrodinger equation by considering the new solvable nonlinear oscillator that relates to the isotonic oscillator through the method of point canonical transformations. We construct exactly solvable potentials by choosing physically important position-dependent mass distributions. We also provide the energy spectrum of the bound states and the wavefunctions of the solvable potentials.

Exact Solution of the Position-Dependent Mass Schrödinger Equation with the Completely Positive Oscillator-Shaped Quantum Well Potential

E. I. Jafarov, Sh. M. Nagiyev

"Two exactly-solvable confined models of the completely positive oscillator-shaped quantum well are proposed. Exact solutions of the position-dependent mass Schrodinger equation corresponding to the proposed quantum well potentials are ¨ presented. It is shown that the discrete energy spectrum expressions of both models depend on certain positive confinement parameters. The spectrum exhibits positive equidistant behavior for the model confined only with one infinitely high wall and nonequidistant behavior for the model confined with the infinitely high wall from both sides. Wavefunctions of the stationary states of the models under construction are expressed through the Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. In general, the Jacobi polynomials appearing in wavefunctions depend on parameters a and b, but the Laguerre polynomials depend only on the parameter a. Some limits and special cases of the constructed models are discussed."
