Exact Solution of the Position-Dependent Mass Schrödinger Equation with the Completely Positive Oscillator-Shaped Quantum Well Potential

Abstract

"Two exactly-solvable confined models of the completely positive oscillator-shaped quantum well are proposed. Exact solutions of the position-dependent mass Schrodinger equation corresponding to the proposed quantum well potentials are ¨ presented. It is shown that the discrete energy spectrum expressions of both models depend on certain positive confinement parameters. The spectrum exhibits positive equidistant behavior for the model confined only with one infinitely high wall and nonequidistant behavior for the model confined with the infinitely high wall from both sides. Wavefunctions of the stationary states of the models under construction are expressed through the Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. In general, the Jacobi polynomials appearing in wavefunctions depend on parameters a and b, but the Laguerre polynomials depend only on the parameter a. Some limits and special cases of the constructed models are discussed."

Quantum singular oscillator with potential controlled by position-dependent mass

E. I. Jafarov, Sh. M. Nagiyev

An exactly solvable model of a nonrelativistic quantum singular oscillator with a controlled potential is constructed. A position-dependent mass is introduced instead of a constant mass of the quantum system under consideration in such a way that it is possible to purposefully control the shape of the potential, turning it into a quantum well with different depths. It is shown that analytical expressions of the wave functions of such a quantum system are described through 2F1 type hypergeometric functions and Jacobi polynomials, whereas, the discrete energy spectrum corresponding to these analytic solutions is non-equidistant. In a specific limit, when the above-mentioned control of the potential shape is lost, the wave functions accurately restore the wave functions of an ordinary quantum singular oscillator, which are described through generalized Laguerre polynomials. At this limit, the energy spectrum also restores the usual equidistant energy spectrum of a quantum singular oscillator.

Exactly solvable model of the one-dimensional confined harmonic oscillator

Roy Oste, E. I. Jafarov, A. M. Jafarova

An exactly solvable model of the one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator confined in a box with infinite walls is constructed. We have found explicit expressions of the non-equidistant energy spectrum as well as stationary states wavefunctions in both momentum and position configuration spaces. It is shown that they are expressed through continuous q-Hermite polynomials. We have also found an explicit expression for the kernel of the finite-continuous Fourier transform between these two representation spaces.

A new model of the linear harmonic oscillator with the position-dependent mass and two direct limits relating Jacobi polynomials to Hermite polynomials

Sh. M. Nagiyev

We constructed a new exactly solvable model of the non-relativistic quantum linear harmonic oscillator with the position-dependent mass Mx=2m0/eαx+1. We solved the Schrödinger equation for this model in the absence and presence of an external homogeneous field. We showed that in both cases the wave functions of the bound states are expressed through Jacobi polynomials, and the corresponding energy spectra are non-equidistant. We also showed that in the limit α→0 the wave functions and energy spectra coincide with the corresponding expressions for a linear harmonic oscillator with the constant mass m0 in the absence and presence of an external homogeneous field. We present also two new limit relations that reduce the Jacobi polynomials directly to the Hermite polynomials with shifted and non-shifted arguments. The proofs of these limit relations are based on the method of mathematical induction.

Exact solution of the position-dependent effective mass and angular frequency Schrödinger equation: harmonic oscillator model with quantized confinement parameter

E I Jafarov, Sh. M. Nagiyev, R Oste +1 more

Abstract We present an exact solution of a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position. The free Hamiltonian of the proposed model has the form of the BenDaniel–Duke kinetic energy operator. The position-dependency of the mass and the angular frequency is such that the homogeneous nature of the harmonic oscillator force constant k and hence the regular harmonic oscillator potential is preserved. As a consequence thereof, a quantization of the confinement parameter is observed. It is shown that the discrete energy spectrum of the confined harmonic oscillator with position-dependent mass and angular frequency is finite, has a non-equidistant form and depends on the confinement parameter. The wave functions of the stationary states of the confined oscillator with position-dependent mass and angular frequency are expressed in terms of the associated Legendre or Gegenbauer polynomials. In the limit where the confinement parameter tends to ∞, both the energy spectrum and the wave functions converge to the well-known equidistant energy spectrum and the wave functions of the stationary non-relativistic harmonic oscillator expressed in terms of Hermite polynomials. The position-dependent effective mass and angular frequency also become constant under this limit.

Coordinate Transformation and Exact Solutions of Schrödinger Equation with Position-Dependent Effective Mass

Ju Guo-Xing, Cai Chang-Ying, Xiang Yang +1 more

Using the coordinate transformation method, we solve the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with position-dependent mass. The explicit expressions for the potentials, energy eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions of the systems are given. The eigenfunctions can be expressed in terms of the Jacobi, Hermite, and generalized Laguerre polynomials. All potentials for these solvable systems have an extra term V m , which is produced from the dependence of mass on the position, compared with those for the systems of constant mass. The properties of V m for several mass functions are discussed.

On the solutions of the position-dependent effective mass Schrödinger equation of a nonlinear oscillator related with the isotonic oscillator

R. A. Kraenkel, Murugaian Senthilvelan

We study exact solutions of the position-dependent effective mass Schrodinger equation by considering the new solvable nonlinear oscillator that relates to the isotonic oscillator through the method of point canonical transformations. We construct exactly solvable potentials by choosing physically important position-dependent mass distributions. We also provide the energy spectrum of the bound states and the wavefunctions of the solvable potentials.
