Abstract

Thanks to a polarization bistability and associated hysteresis cycle generated in optical fibers through a counter-propagating four-wave mixing process, we report the proof-of-principle of an optical flip-flop memory and a 10-Gbit/s routing operation.

A polarization bistability and hysteresis cycle phenomenon is demonstrated in optical fibers thanks to a counter-propagating four-wave mixing interaction. Based on this process, we successfully report the proof-of-principle of an optical flip-flop memory and a 10-Gbit/s routing operation.

Optical flip–flop memory and data packet switching operation based on polarization bistability in a telecommunication optical fiber

P.-Y. Bony, Massimiliano Guasoni, Elie Assémat +5 more

We report the experimental observation of bistability and hysteresis phenomena of the polarization signal in a telecommunication optical fiber. This process occurs in a counterpropagating configuration in which the optical beam nonlinearly interacts with its own Bragg-reflected replica at the fiber output. The proof of principle of optical flip–flop memory and 10 Gbit/s routing operation is also reported based on this polarization bistability. Finally, we also provide a general physical understanding of this behavior on the basis of a geometrical analysis of an effective model of the dynamics. Good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.

Passive Fiber Ring Flip-Flop Memory Based On Polarization Dynamics

Jorge García-Mateos, Fernando Canal, Marc Haelterman

Passive fiber ring resonators synchronously pumped by cw trains of ultrashort pulses are shown to exhibit polarization symmetry breaking. Application of this feature to all-optical storage is considered. The proposed storage device operates in the flip-flop mode which makes possible all-optical writing and erasing operations on individual bits. Numerical simulations suggest that a storage capacity of the order of thousand bits could be attainable at bit rates of hundreds of Gb/s with a maximum information processing rate of several Gb/s

All-optical flip-flop based on optical bistability in an integrated SOA/DFB-SOA

Young‐Il Kim, Jae Hun Kim, Young Min Jeon +3 more

We have demonstrated for the first time an all-optical flip-flop based on optical bistability of an integrated SOA/DFB-SOA by applying an input signal with the period of 25.2 ns. An all-optical flip-flop based on optical bistability is expected to process the signal at an ultra-high speed in a light-wave communication. All-optical flip-flop has various applications such as all optical memory, demultiplexing, packet-header buffering, and retiming. Moreover, an integrated SOA/DFBSOA can perform all-optical logic operation and wavelength conversion by cross gain modulation.

All-optical flip-flop operations in a coupled element bistable device

Kenju Otsuka

An optical bistable device composed of coupled nonlinear elements is proposed. This device features optical bistability without hysteresis. It is shown theoretically that a set-reset type (S-R) flip-flop operation can be easily achieved on an all-optical basis by utilising nonhysteretic bistable characteristics.
